What are the pros/cons of "vanilla" republic the "modified" republic in GOTM 29?

Unit support.

The modded Republic gives you free support up to a certain level, then hits you harder above that level. The old version has no free unit support at any size. Unless you are trying to run a big army with a small number of cities I think the new Republic works out cheaper.

For one thing, the unit support is a plus for smaller civs and defense. The +2 gpt / unit really hasn't been a deterent for me, even w/ a large civ. If I'm not a religious trait civ, I still prefer to remain in republic v. suffering the anarchy for a switch to democracy.

It should work very well in large civs. The larger the civ is, the more cities you have that require no defence at all because they are located deep in your territory, thus requiring no units but contributing unit support. The possible exception is archipelagos, where many of your cities are in danger of invasion from the coast.
