GOTM 40 Pre-Game Discussion

Taking into account that we are at North and there is a desert on that island, don't you think that it sounds too warm? Maybe even hot?
Is that a desert on the island? I thought it was a plains. Somebody confirm?

In GOTM 21 I didn't build hoplites until very late on, then I only built a few as cheap units to upgrade through rifles to infantry to MI. That was in the early days, of course, when I used to build units with more defence than attack points :). I don't recall how I triggered my GA. I'll have to go back and read my spoilers
Heh, In GOTM 21 I triggered my GA with a hoplite by killing a Musketman just after I got my FP up to the north area. IIRC I lost 2 hoplites on a redline Musket and triggered with the 3rd one.

finally the gotm 40 is coming... have been waiting ever since i finished my gotm 39 25 days ago.
Funny, I'm the opposite. I have failed to complete the last 4 GOTMs in the allotted time. Maybe I'll get to finish this one.

For this start, I think that the best bet is to scout north with the worker, and then either move NW or north to the river and possibly beyond. The fish seem to be much better for a later city when we are closer to MapMaking.

Being in the far north, I think the FP followed by palace jump will be the strongest move. I may even try to do a free palace jump. (Assuming I find time to play)

Enjoy.

I've been thinking about everyone worrying that we are too far north. Since we are on a warm world, the continent offshore could end up being little but desert and jungle. We might be right where we want to be.

Then again, it's not like ainwood to give us anything too easy...

Only for Civ, and I've overcome that with my setup. And for everything else it's a joy compared to Windows!

Only for civ?!? Isn't that what computers are for? What's this 'everything else' stuff?

Well ... ummm ... there's

- writing up turn logs for Civ games

- browsing CivFanatics and related sites

- programming for the CivFanatics site

- trying to create utilities for Mac players who want to play Civ, GOTM ...

.... see? Lot's of stuff that isn't running the actual Civ software :D

When is it OK to start discussing the game?

Not until the spoiler threads go up. If you've opened the save it is best not to post in this thread at all as even the smallest thing might be a spoiler to some. I think the 1st Spoiler thread usually goes up after 5 days or so.

Well, I'll be starting tonight.

From what I've deduced from what I've read in this thread and seen on the announcement page, here are my thoughts.

1. We're either on a small island or in the upper corner of the continent so,
A. Settler goes NW and worker will mine & road starting tile
B. I'll research pottery first as it fits either scenario.
C. Will build a scouting warrior and send him NE seeking friends and future city sites and start a second warrior, though I might change that to either a worker or granary pre-build depending on what warrior #1 finds

If we are on a small island, then Athens will build a settler then granary until the island is full and then workers. Research will move to Alphabet->Writing->Map Making. If the starting warrior finds a good spot (ample food, coastal & high shields), I'll plant a city aiming for Colossus with a 20K victory path in mind. If no spot like that shows up, then I'll plan on a military path.

If on the otherhand it's the end of a larger island, then I'll proceed to research iron working after setting up a barracks with the intent of having 10 Vet Warriors in place to upgrade to Swords to set out on a path of conquest with a possible 100K option if only a couple of weak AI are on my island.

First time GOTM...I have Civ IIIv1.29f and have PTW...but my Ptw was on my C3C disc ...which version do I play...do I need the downloads ?

When I load C3C...I don't have an option to chose PTW...but I do have a save folder for PTW..how can I access these saves...and if I save during game play...won't they be saved in the C3c saves folder..and I will have the C3c tech changes et al. ?

Ah - OK.

No - to get PTW to work, you need to open Windows Explorer, and browse to your Civ3 directory. In that, look in the Civ3PTW subdirectory for "civilization3x.exe" - that is actually the PTW executable, so just double-click on it to run it. Conquests installs PTW, but doesn't create a shortcut to it (unfortunately).

You have to play it in PTW, because although the PTW file will load in conquests, the "rules" are different, so we can't accept games played like that. :(

@ainwood: Why do you need to go into Windows Explorer? It should be in your start menu, shouldn't it?

We have a similar rule in the Hall of Fame. I had to look a little for my PTW menu option when starting this GOTM, which will be the first GOTM I actually finish!

I think I’ll try the open class on this one. I’ve only played two Regent level games (one I lost very badly the other I’m still playing but appear to be doing very good).

I’ll move the worker N to open up some of my view. If there is nothing of interest I’ll move the settler NW and build Athens right there. I was thinking about initially researching Writing in the hopes I can get Pottery from an Expansionist civ. I worry though that we’re on an island and I’ll just end up screwing myself in the long run. If this were a normal continents map I’d chance it, but I’m not for sure about that “(nominally) Continents”.

I’m looking forward to this game as Greece is the civ I played the majority of the time during my Chieftain levels (in other words just a couple months ago). I feel very comfortable with them and believe I am up to the challenge of an ‘open game’. I’ll go for a Space Race win as that is my usual choice when I played the Greeks.

Question for Staff or experienced players:
I noticed in GOTM39 that many players discussed a civ called the Keltoi where they were coming up as the Celts for me. Was this because I was playing the game in PtW rather than vanilla? If this is the case would this game (as in GOTM40) best be played in vanilla as well? I only ask as when I finally made it to the prerequisites for the first spoiler and I began reading them I noticed people mentioning the Keltoi and thought I had failed to meet all the civs. It wasn’t until I rechecked my game and read some of the posts on that thread that I realized their Keltoi were my Celts.

I realize the game still plays the same but was curious if the vanilla had more of the GOTM feel than in PtW? Thanks, and I hope I expressed my question correctly.

What do you mean by "GOTM feel"? If you want to see the different units, civ names, city names and such that were added to the vanilla game to make it PTW-equivalent, then yes, obviously you'll have to play the vanilla version. But PTW has always been supported as well: I played GOTM17 as regular old PTW Carthage, for example, not as neo-Carthage. So I guess it's up to you.
