GOTM 7 ((SPOILER)) discussion

Civ2 saves are not backwards compatible.Saves from later versions don't work on earlier editions.
Once a game has been saved in MGE it can't be loaded by classic....period.

compressing is using something like stuffit to compress files.Same as a .zip basically.

This is my first game of the month and I'm not exactly sure how the scoring works. I'm currently at 1800 AD and firmly in control. Here's how I've been playing it...

Knowing that I'd be stuck on a little island I headed immediately for mapmaking and set out for North America to settle. Of course, I met the Celts right away, but rather than lay them to waste I traded techs and then DECLARED WAR against them. I drove their units out of Britain and then set up a veteran warrior on the hill next to Cardiff and fortified him. They wasted all their armies trying to bump that one guy off. By the time they improved their tech I had a phalanx on the hill. They were too stupid to expand by sea so they never got a second city. Once I had about a dozen cities in North America I crushed the Celts who became the Russians in Japan.

On the European front...The Spanish seemed strongest on the mainland so I allied with them and got the Spanish and Vikings to duke it out. This kept each busy while I established two strong cities in the north of France. The Mongols were able to expand rapidly as they were unopposed in the east - the Babylonians made peace early.

I was able to get the Great Library which helped a lot at the beginning, but by 1500 I was way out in front with technology with all my free-wheeling cities in the new world. Edinborough (my second city north of London) was my science city raking in about 350 bulbs per turn. I'm now Fundamentalist with only 2 techs left to get. All went pretty smooth except for once allowing the govt. to collapse and getting three cities bribed in one turn (STUPID

) I now have the Spanish down to one city, Mongols are ready to launch a spaceship and I am ready to sack their capital. North and South America have been mine uncontested all game (although it's taking forever to get rid of all the jungle.)

All is well. Time to add cities and polish this thing off.

Matrix has a cool spreadsheet that lets you calculate your score so you can see what score you have and what score you could have.

When you are planning on hitting the Mongols, just remember that they can move thier capital after you take their current one. If they have at least one other city and 1000 gold, they will move thier capital right after you occupy the city that it currently is in.

Oh what a lousy game!

I've never lost my capital city before, and only survived through the good graces of the Spanish.

They were profitable trading partners and loyal allies, whcih was just as well as the Mongols were always demanding more gold.

Besides playing badly I had a Coastal Fortress in Cardiff that didn't work, and the Mongols kept hammering it and my other British cities.

It was very odd, no message "Coastal Fortress in Cardiff Doubles Defensive Strenght!" Must have been a dodgy contractor!

Finished with eight cities so that should cement my position near the bottom.

It's my first GOTM and I played fairly. No restarting the game when it isn't going my way...I'm not used to that. Oh well, I haven't played for awhile. I retired in 2020 with a less than average score at best.

I too didn't realize I was on world map right away so I didn't take advantage of North America until middle of the game.

The Eagle has landed.

My game is done.English colonists have successfully bridged the gap..blah blah.

I had to assimilate at least 18 civs. The courage and gallantry of English forces will be spoken of for eons.

I have no problem with the map size.Although I can see where some may prefer smaller maps.

I would suggest for a future large map game we go with small landmasses for a watery world.A map is only as big as the land available to settle.

Unfortunately, the scoring doesn't encourage small perfectionist civs of 1-10 cities.Any size map goes quickly with that style. You can do it,but won't get a very high score.

This isn't going that good,

It's too much terrain to clear,

I realize that I'll never get those 7000 points, or whatever will be needed, in time. I'm in 1470 and have about 1200 points, 150 settlers, 100 cities and lot's of techs until spaceflight. I am pretty sure I'm going to win the game though,
smile.gif

I'm also having problems with barbarians taking my undefended colonizations,

Anyone who's got an idea about who'll win this mounth? My bets are on smash...

I agree. A large landmass about once a year at most. A large, watery, custom archipelago would be interesting.

I agree too.... This is jus crasy, I played for more than two hours and made 10 turns...

I agree.I did not play this gotm because i couldn't find the time to play it "properly"

Well my empire got republic very early and we have a little to do in the getting bigger department! But communism for 10 turns in the 13th century changed all that and now I am very annoyed about the micromanagement.

I got over the main hurdle though...now the a.i fear me so they stop sneak attacking WOOHOO (I was giving them everything I could to placate them cos I'm so nice).

My main difficulty is motivating myself to colonise EVERYWHERE...and the amazon rainforest is pretty big MIAOW!!!

1400...kitten is doing fine.

PLAY IT PROPERLY? gotm 6 I did in 4 hours...I play for fun, the score gets academic and is merely the result of the scoring system where population gets you so many points (daft...china would do better than the USA!)

Owning the whole world would be better than both China and the US, Muahahaha!

Finally my GOTM score is increasing, not much though...

I swear I will never ever play king level on the world map again.

I'm finally done, my glorious spaceship landed in AD1813.

After almost 500 years of simcitying.
I would have conquored the world, but the Americans did not want to trade maps, and i couldnt find them anywhere.

Even if this meant owning places like Afghanistan and Lebanon as well? I'd sell them to the Zulus.
I would have conquered the world, but the Americans did not want to trade maps, and I couldnt find them anywhere.
What about the Apollo program? Didn't that show you? Or did they restart after the Apollo program?
If you gift a small civ enough tech to make them worshipful, they will exchange maps. Then you can go and kill them. They won't have time to use the new tech against you.

Well i finally finished too, and even though i hardly had any population compared to the rest of you lot, man towards the end the game it just stops being fun
aargh4.gif
. I dont know how some of you guys find the patience to keep going with all that micromanagement. Anyways there was one thing which this GOTM told me, f*** i can't wait for civ3 to come out....

I had a similiar problem trying to find some restarters. I had Marco's and later the UN, but at times I didn't even get the option to share maps even after a huge tech gifting. I think that if the civ is still in "Settler Mode" and they haven't established a city then they will have no maps to share.

Later, I would get a message that such-and-such civilization was destroyed by barbaians or something. I can only assume that they tipped a hut with disasterous results or they restarted in the middle of greenland or some other polar area and couldn't build a city.

Well, I finished anyway. Had a bit over 12,000 points and finished in 1649.

I'M KIDDING!!!!! Didn't even finish yet, but I bet that got a reaction.

smile.gif

What about a game , soory but i restarted it once :/ Hope it will be forgiven , because i spent loooooooots of time already
smile.gif

Now it is about 1300 AD and i am in republic , 100+ cities . Heading to Communism , hope to get my civilization even bigger . Cities are very small , only few reached 8+ level .
I colonized almost everything exept South America , Northern Africa and Eastern China , Eastern Russia , bit of india , Astralia , Indonesia and so on .

Hope it will be nice result for me
smile.gif

What about the Apollo program? Didn't that show you? Or did they restart after the Apollo program?

They had no city and i must have missed their move after Apollo. But once I had Apollo I was better off heading for space anyway.
btw. I checked with reveal map. They were on a small island west of Greenland, only tundra and arctic.

If you gift a small civ enough tech to make them worshipful, they will exchange maps. Then you can go and kill them.

I did, but alas they did not need my useless English maps.

Well duh.

Oh yeah and "settler only" civs will trade maps, i did that several times in this game.
Why the Americans didnt want to I have no clue.
