GOTM09 was my fifth Civ3 game. After running a test on monarch I got crushed in 2 deity games and finally managed to win the third. Then I discovered GOTM and thought this would be fun.
I do present some of my ideas on this game as well as a short summary for discussion and entertainment of all.
Egypts being industrious and religious with war chariots as UU can't avoid an early GA. I do consider this good contrary to a couple of other opinions I found floating around. You just have to be prepared for it. The advantage of an early GA is, you can catch up with the AI early in the game. Usually you should have serious problem after you are on par with the AI. So I prepared my GA and intendet triggering it with the pyramids, which is both an industious and religious wonder. I would use use the production and commercial bonus to get the lighthouse and the great libary and then send hordes of troops to other islands.
I moved my worker onto the hill in the north and founded at the starting position, with has access to fresh water and a cattle after cultural expansion. I planed to build the pyramids and the great libary here. So I started with 3 warriers, a settler, a worker to improve production, a temple and then the pyramids.
I founded Memphis in 3000 BC on the hill beside the second cattle. having access to both cattle and wheat it produced most of my settlers.
Heliopolis was founded in 2230 BC 4 tiles northeast of memphis and should be prepared for the lighthouse by prebuilding a palast after some initial builds.
I build the pyramids in 1075 BC and triggered my GA as intended. Discovered I did a math error in judging the corruption after the GA. Fortunately one of the huts gave me bronce working and Heliopolis build the Kolossos in 850 BC instead of the lighthouse. The GA still allowed me to build the lighthouse in 290 BC and the libary in 110 BC.
I stopped researching after the discovery of the essential techs. The libary gave me the wheel and iron working almost immediately and there where no horses, but there was iron. So I got no horsemen/war chariots but lots of swordsmen I intended to use against Japan by upgrading warriors.
Japan declared war on me around 100 AD and my 10 galleys where ready only a few turns later. I then invaded Japan with more than 60 swordsmen. Taking out 5 cities on the first turn. Due to the lack of speed of the swordsmen my war progressed slowly and Japan got finally eliminated around 1000 AD. Around this time I looked into the spoiler threat and discovered I was way behind other players in the contest for domination or conquest. So I concentrated on culture where I had already a solid base.
The rest of my game was not entertaining. Concentrating on culture and sience I was well ahead of the AI from the industial age on. I managed to build all wonders except the great wall, the oracle and Sun Tzu.
At several times one of the AIs demanded tribute and got a blody nose. Nevertheless I held back not to trigger a domination victory. Finally in 1832 I passed the 100000 culture border and had way more than twice the culture of everybody else.
