Goz11- 5CC-Deity

I've been rather busy tonight, and don't have time to play. :(

Not much to report. Built cannons, cavalry, and a few riflemen.

760 AD (6)
Safely steal Steam Power from Korea for 2404 gold.
Big surprise: we have no coal.

790 AD (9)
IT: Persia allies Korea against Sumeria

Sumeria lost 6 cities during this turnset. They won't stand much longer.

I set Bangalore for 20 spt at -3 fpt. In a few turns it will need to be set for 5-turn cavs at zero growth or 6-turn cavs / 3-turn cannons at +3 fpt. Delhi is good for 3-turn cavs (28+26+26 shields) with a loss of 1 food every three turns. We should be able to attempt another safe steal in about 12 turns.

Coal to buy? Um.. yeah... on the last turn, CAII informed me that [our enemy] has coal available.

Xerxes will sell it for 6 gpt. There is one coal in unclaimed territory to the north but a border expansion will claim it and it will take a while to get there. I think we need the railroads to thwart boat landings. We are in for at least 8 or 9 turns anyway so it would effectively add about 11 turns to the preparations.

I've played 6 turns so far and we're at war with Persia. :) I probably signed our death sentence but we have no choice.

Now, we have the chance to sign MPP with Korea and can easily drag Inca into to war as well. I can't figure out any other way to stop Xerxes as Sumeria is toast. I think if we can make Persia to divide their forces, we have at least some chance? The downside is that they might grab even more territory and it will be them against us in the end.

I just need a break and some time to think. So far we razed 6 persian towns and will take a few more. Pillaged all fast routes to our lands, so we should be able to defend ourselves when they send their hordes against us.

We can research Sanitaiton or Industrialization in 11 turns, or try to steal it soonish. We're making around 200gpt atm.

Our towns are connected by rails and we'll have our own coal next turn, it will last for at least 2 turns as a colony. Maybe I can protect it with the army...

Go for sanitation to get the population up faster.

Have you thought about getting some workers up there to built a fortification on the coal?

I would think we should send the army to detach some of Xerxes main assets.

This is where it is going to get real interesting.

Pre-turn - This looks like a lost game unfortunately, Persia is running away. There's a very small chance we can do something though, at least we'll have to try to stop that green mean machine for a bit.

I buy coal and ROP from Persia for 13gpt and send all fast units out on pillage&recon missions.

My plan is to try an immediate steal in a few turns and then hopefully raze all or at least most persian towns N of us. Our expensive horsemen will be fodder as they pillage important tiles later. If we raze enough towns quickly, we should get peace fairly quickly too, even if we have to pay for it.

A problem is that Persia can sign Korea against us, But I'll worry about that later.

Start railing.

810AD - Discover I need to pillage further N than planned, so I will cut roads north of former Japan. We need to make it hard for persia to travel, when they go after us.

820AD - Kyoto pop 15 and Osaka pop 12(Persia) must be quite unhappy now, after I cut their roads home. :)

830AD - We lose our dyes from Sumeria, I don't renew it. Persia took 2 more of their cities ibt and it looks like we're too late to do much. Persia's towns NW of us is cut off from their empire as well.

840AD - Not much.

850AD - Sumeria is down to 3 cities, our units are in position for next turn.

860AD - It's crunchtime.

prep850ad.jpg

I muster all gpt I can find and buy 2566g for 191gpt. I try an immedaite steal and we are at war with Persia.

I then succeed with a safe steal from Korea:

We take Communism and trade that to Sumeria for Medicine, 230g and a worker.

Attack Satsuma with the army, kill 2 rifles and raze the town. Gain 2 workers, a cannon and 89g. Pillage tiles around the area and capture 4 more workers.

Attack Erech, 7 cavs only kill one rifle, the rest retreats. Find another cav nearby and raze the city. 90g and a worker.

Autoraze Tours for 91g, lose 2 cavs. Damn rifles.

Raze Lyons, no losses. We get 92g and 2 workers.

Raze Zabalam without losses, 93g and 2 workers.

Raze Dariush Kabir, lose a cav but we get a leader. 94g and 4 workers.

I drag Korea into the war, giving them silks and 8gpt.

korea-ally.jpg

Then I reneg peace with them and get Industrialization for 172gpt. Try an immediate steal and:

korea-war.jpg

Now what? Research Sanitation or Espionage? I decide on the latter, we need proper spies and we got that leader that can rush Intelligence Agency, but it will take quite a few turns at max research.

870AD - Lose a horse. Troops need to heal before I can push on.

Build a colony on the coal and start a fortress.

880AD - Lose another horseman.

We raze Dijon, grab 88g and a cannon.

890AD - Attack Rouen, there's a guerilla in the town, so Persia knows RP! Raze the town and get 2 workers and 85g.

I stack of 18 cavs shows up N of Bangalore, I have to sacrifice 3 horsemen to cut some roads.

Start building factories, that can be changed if we need more units.

900AD - Warweariness strikes and we have to use luxtax.

Xerxes is willing to talk, I don't think this is the right time for peace.

I think the next few turns will be great fun. :)

zerksees is up.

zerksees killing Xerxes, isn't that just lovely? :)

Don't waste our stuff, please.

No reason to have a long war, just kill what they send to us and we might get something for peace. We'll be at war with them again soon enough, I reckon. :) Korea will probably sign peace too soon.

Do we need to change gov again? What gov would give us more than Demo? After all, we only have 5 cities and with factories and hospitals, they will be pretty good.

I was just wondering about whether we should let up on Xerxes. If we were going to have a real long war then war weariness would be a problem, but since the short term goal appears to be to inflict damage until we can get a favorable peace treaty (after any MA's we might have end) there is no need to change. Items to acquire during peace negotiations include techs, coal and gold.

I will play this about 12 hrs from now.

I was also curious what the difference would be between governments with just 5 cities. And since we are religious not much time would be lost in anarchy.

With double the unit support cost in Republic, and only 5 cities to generate income, I think that would be a bad choice. Staying in Democracy and increasing the lux-tax would be less expensive.

Persia and Korea in fascism

900 AD - preflight

All cities are building factories which means no reinforcements for at least 6 turns. There are 14 Persian cavalry on the border. Sounds like fun! We have 29 cavs, 8 riflemen, 22 cannon, our army and a leader in reserve.

IBT - Lost a riflemen after he defeated a Persian cav [1-1]
Notice an Incan settler with a spearman escort

910 AD -
Xerxes will talk, he will give 50 gold for peace. Looks like gozpel softened him up a bit. :)
Discovered we are also at war with the Inca
Took the Incan settler, cleared out all the Persian cavs upgrading three of ours to elite [19-3]. Now Xerxes will give 80 gold :p
One Persian cav remains with 2 HP left
Built a fortification on the Free Zone Railroad near the border where the rifleman was fortified.

IBT - Two Korean cavs land near Calcutta
Two HP cav takes out one of our cavs [19-4]

920AD - To my surprise most of the remaining Persian cavs retreat.
Clear out the Korean cavs and some Persian cavs costing us one cav [23-5]
See Korean and Persian ships fighting off our coast.
Now Xerxes willing to give 100 gold.

IBT - No attacks. Inca and Sumerians make peace.

930 AD - Still Inca and Korea will not talk.
Take 3 cavs off the mountain near Bangalore with help from cannon, and clear a rifleman off our F.Z.R.R. [27-5]

IBT - Persians advance but no attacks, landing a cavalry off a boat. I think Korea lost a city to Persia north of Bangalore

940 AD - Koreans will talk. Our cash is low so they want Madras. I think Wang Kon has a concussion :crazyeye:
Had to cut science to 40% as we are almost out of money.
Take out 6 more Persian cavs [33-5]

IBT - No attacks

950 AD - Koreans still on crack - want Madras. Minimal Persian threat so I go and take Kaesong and raze it. Wang Kon comes to his senses and will now give us Vilcas and 27 gold for peace (he only has 27 gold). No techs yet.

Also clear out some Persians - 2 cavs and a rifleman [38-5]

Korea will also give military alliance against Persia, but I don't think that will do any good since he is already at war with Persia.

Move some units in place to extend F.Z.R.R to the west so we can take the three Persian cities over there.

Xerxes still won't give more than about 80 gold for peace.

I'll play the rest tomorrow night.

None of the three I can speak with have espionage yet, so I am not sure what to do with the tech slider. Right now it is at 40%, we are gaining +2 gpt, and espionage done in 11 turns. We have less than 30 gold.

Gilgamesh has a worker and 60 gold. Should I pay gpt for his gold, as he has only two cities left? We might avoid having to pay the whole thing back.

Dehli will have factory in 1 turn. We have no saltpeter. I'll probably build a few riflemen. I could try for universal suffrage though I doubt we could make it. No one has medicine yet so hospital prebuild is out.

Edit - Have not seen any infantry yet - Xerxes must not have rubber yet.

Any thoughts?

IBT –
Lost a cavalry
See Persian infantry :(
Here comes a free cannon

Turn 6: 960 AD
Well since no one cares, I decided to convert to monarchy to avoid war weariness. I also changed Calcutta to universal suffrage. Sent the army up against the infantry and it lost! (Just kidding!)

Take six cavalry and a rifleman as well as the free cannon
Workers busy railroading tiles on every turn.

IBT – no attacks
Sumeria and Korea make peace
Xerxes will give 140 gold

Turn 7: 970 AD
Make peace with Korea collecting 40 gold. I really want them to fight Xerxes not us.
FZRR roading completed and now units can get through. Took Grenoble collecting 81 gold, then took Akshak collecting 82 gold.
In all 9 rifles and one cav were taken costing us one cavalry [16-2]
Now Xerxes will give 300 gold :) , but I am not done

IBT – no attacks
Dehli: rifle -> rifle
Calcutta: factory -> rifle

Turn 8: 980 AD
Defeat our first infantry. Also took down 3 cavalries [20-2]
War weariness is up. Tried making peace with Inca – had to give theory of gravity collecting world map and 1 gold, but it did not help war weariness. (edit - Yikes I hope we did not have a military alliance against the Inca as I forgot to check)
Reduce science to 30 and up lux to 30. Also had to mm adding a clown here or there.

IBT – no attacks
Bombay: factory -> rifle
Madras: factory -> rifle
Bangalore: factory -> rifle

Turn 9: 990 AD
Take out five more cavs [25-2]
Move 11 cannons outside Avignon
Notice Sumerians are back up to 3 cities

IBT – no attacks
Dehli: rifle -> rifle

Turn 10: 1000AD
Unload 11 cannons and redline all units in Avignon. Took all three rifles in there and lost only one hit point. Maybe a bit of overkill. The city was size 7 and we got some free workers.
Also knocked off one infantry. [29-2]
As you can see Xerxes is a little more negotiable now.:mischief:

So overall I took 3 Persian and one Korean city, went 67-7 in war, gained a free cannon and about 6 more workers. I guess X man was sending 6-7 units a turn. Remember during peace he will be building up those at 6-7 units a turn.

There is quite a bit of work to do on the next pre-flight. The army is at full strength and could be used to take down those infantry north of Bangalore – or wait a turn and kill them once they get closer and you can redline with cannons. I am sure there is some optimizing to be done on the citizens as well.

Now may be a good time to get peace with Xerxes? I leave that to the next player to decide.

Gozpel you pulled some crafty tricks on the AI there to get some techs, but it left me with little to do besides make war. (Not a problem for me ) Your predictions were correct it was fun, and except for the weariness we could continue this way for a long time.

Nicely played zerkzees, I know I put you in a damper there, but that's how it goes in 5CC. Killing 67 units is absolutely awesome and you got us to where we wanted to be.

Persia will pay something like 1340g for peace. That's what we were looking for. :)

Then we can sort out deals to get saltpeter again and as soon as we learn Espionage, we can either go for hospitals right away (preferred) or try to deal to get Corp. or Electricity. Electricity is cheaper, since 2 AI's knows it. But no hurry yet.

Or get more saltpeter from Xerxes quite cheaply, so we can build a decent stack of cavs for the last tricks with fast units, well, until tanks that is. :)

If we make peace now, we can research pretty fast and get maybe Esp. and Sanitation. I think it's worth a shot. Then we save up for another immediate steal (after trying to get techs in trades) and we'll have war again.

I know exactly what to do here, do you Own? Our future hangs on your decisions now.

No complaints here. Just wanted you to know I was thinking about trades/diplo, there just wasn't much to do. Your excellent diplomacy cut the amount of Persian units coming directly at us, making it no big deal to spend most of the time building factories.

I would like a railroad on every border tile so that it will be easier to attack the enemy - and chop that forest north of Bangalore please.

Pretty soon all the improvements will be done. When we get peace we could spread some of the workers out around our coal so no one can build a city nearby and take it from us.

I suggest trying to get replaceable parts before the next war so we know where the rubber is. Oh yeah and we can upgrade our cannons to artillery

Just play when you got the time, Smart (if that's in the weekend limit?) and I'm happy.

Just to remind you, read through my last couple of turnsets of how doing rotten things and also read through zerksees stuff, so you get an idea where we're going.

It's NOT rotten to buy all gold for gpt and then make immediate steals.
It's not rotten to buy techs for huge gpt and then make immediate steals.

Things like that makes us survive.

And also Smart, it would be good to get your input on diff Govs. I personally believes nothing is better than Demo at this stage, as long as we stage short wars.

Peace atm with Persia is too good to reject really, 1340g in the coffers and they got bleeding a fair bit from zerkees'es turns. You can finally build that damn colloseum in Bangalore. And check for lux-deals.

What else? Erh, you see it when you open the save.
