GR20 - Genocide AWE vs 30 Civs (try 2)

I have almost finished and should post tonight.

We did get Pentagon near the end and have size 4 Sword and ACav Army now - the second ACav Army is coming back for its last unit.
Expansion has been slow, but with 3 armies and swords we should start to expand again.

Early: Enemy forces are not heavy. We are handling them fine. Start connecting the Iron now. Soon we will have swords.
Several towns on Workers. We need some to extend the roads.

Lose 2 Horse, Archer on attack vs injured units. Lose Enkidu on defense.
Army drops to 3 hp attacking a Legion. Cover with Enkidu
Lux to 20%

Mid: Curragh was trying to find someplace new sinks.
Gah! I am having the worst luck vs Spanish swords. Lost Elite Archer vs 1 hp Sword. The Swords are better than 50% at 2 and 1 hp.
Sword prebuilds complete 4 swords so we can fill our Army.

Destroy Hispalis (Roman) and a Worker.

Landing:I just built what-a-whale and Spain instantly targetted it. It is up North to grab an extra whale.
Got Philosophy

Got an Army over near Spain helping to kill troops. Sent another Army to look for Roman Iron.

Get a leader which becomes Pentagon. Start adding 4th troop.

Notes:
Lost a few Enkidu and Archers. I didn't lose any attack 3 units.

Armies came back to get 4th unit, but I would really like to penetrate Roman territory and pillage the Iron.

We have several settlers waiting - I didn't slow the capitol. I think building roads under Enkidu and such and then forming new towns is important.

The Save

got it...hope I can find the Roman iron

save

Preturn
MM a little, there are still too many unimproved tiles around

1.70AD
defeat 5 enemy units and move settler under sword army forward

IT we get the FP and Iro's finish the Great Lighthouse

2.90AD
take out 2 units, more Hittite units are just out of range
get our FP city to 15 spt for 2 turn swords

IT currently the enemy doesn't attack our cities, but moves into our land, no so good

3.110AD
raze Antium and move settler in place (it will give us incense)
take out 8 units behind the lines losing an EW to a retreated TMC

IT lose 2 EW, one to attacks in the west after taking ou 2 units
the other is attacked by TMC's, they got so many of them, incredible
Babylon finishes MoM

4. 130AD
found Incense and move a ACav army next to Ravenna
move another settler into position while taking care of a Portuguese horse
take out 2 redlined TWC and then bombard the various Spanish troops next to Kuara
our cats do a bad job though

IT thanks to that poor bombardment we lose 2 EW

5. 150AD
take out 2 units on top of our furs
get really fed up with our cats when 7 of them take off 1 hp from a spear
the rest does a little better, then lose a sword against a 2hp MTC, those units are a sure pest
take care of 2 of them
found Kutallu, that paves the way to Rome and I start to attack that

also take out Ravenna after defeating 2 units inside and then another legion

IT legion redlines but takes out a EW
Spanish start HG, we should get monarchy one day then

6.170AD
take care of the red legion with a sword
 Rome itself is burnt after taking out 3 units
take care of 3 more units

IT Hittite TMC's keep on running parallel to our borders to the new front cities
Iro's finish ToA and Spain HG, to finish it off, Celts get GW

7.190AD
found Anshan in the woods
defeat landed Spanish sword
take out 2 legions next to Kutallu

there are 5 TMC in range of Susa, bolster up defense there
good news as I spot Roman iron and step on it next to Veji

IT enemy units run around, but don't attack
we get a border expansion at Susa, that will help really

8. 210AD
pillage Roman iron and raze Veji anyway after taking out 3 legions
3 foreign slaves are disbanded

it's time to clear out some enemy units in our territory
take out 8 units, no losses

IT the AI counters and a legion defeats a sword in the woods that ran into him
lose a sword but defeat 2 more TMC that came out of the fog..

9. 230AD
defeat 2 Portuguese horses and a red TMC
take out 2 spears
take out a legion in Pompei

IT more units appear near Incense

10. 130BC
take out Portuguese horse with ACav army and pull it back to Incense
burn Pompeii after taking out 2 spears

screen with some pointers.

We should be able to settle the south-eastern part and take over that land. Keep on producing settlers if possible

Good work. :goodjob:

In the last twenty-two turns the GLib hasn't brought us anything except Philosophy. It's a good thing we've got the min-research run on Monarchy going as an insurance policy.

It's interesting that we've already found three luxuries when we've only met four enemies. By that standard, there ought to be more civs on our continent.

It's a minor point, but is the Enk build in Kisurra intentional? Even if we want more of them, a town at 8 spt is an inefficient place for that build, but ideal for swordsmen. Edit: I see that the shield count at Kisurra has just been changed by population growth, but in any case, I'd change the build now.

Oh, yes go ahead and change that. I would even go ahead and swap to a settler since we are pretty short of them.

If we want to gamble, we could swap the FP city to a Sun Tzu prebuild. This could of course, go wrong. As I see it, we are bound to meet more Civs as NP pointed out (3 luxes means there should be around 3/8*30 enemies). They might catapult us into the MA. Sun Tzu is great on such maps.

IBT : 7 Spanish swords appear and numerous 3MCs
2 Portuguese horses die attacking incense

1) 260AD : kill 2 3MCs, lose 2 swrods a horse and an AC on the remaing two (all 3MCs were yellow or red btw and on plains)

IBT : lose an EW on defense, kill one legion on defense
Spain lands two swords at Erech
the seven Spanish swords enter our territory

2) 270AD : kill the two landed swords
a Roman archer and a legion go down
smack 2 spear in Pisae and raze the city, our East is now AI-free
lose another archer on a redlined 3MC, what is up with these guys ?????
finally kill one with an AC
kill another two, but lose another EW on a redlined one, grrrr.
they are a pest, take down two more with an AC army
I am more lucky with the Spanish swords. We kill 4 clean and the fifth just takes a HP from one of our swords, 2 wounded Spanish swords remain

IBT : lose a sword and kill a sword on defense
no ending 3MCs coming towards us

3) 280AD : kill the remaining Spanish sword
raze Brundisium killing a legion
zwo Portuguese horsemen go down

IBT : a Spanish sword suicides on one of ours and we have another elite

4) 290AD : kill a Spanish sword and a 3MC, but lose two swords in the process
one less legion and 3 3MCs
kill a Portuguease horseman

IBT : exchange a sword for a Spanish one
a Portuguease archer and horseman die attacking Incense

5) 300AD : kill 3 3MCs and a Spanish sword and our Western front is more relaxed, if it continues like this we will be able to assemble a SOD soon

IBT : kill a Spanish sword on defense
A Spanish sword is landed at Erech

6) 310AD : kill 3 3MCs, 1 Portuguese spear, 1 legion, 1 Spanish sword, losing one of our swords

IBT : lose an AC and 2 swords on defense, but take 1 Spanish sword and spear down with them

7) 320AD : kill 1 Portuguese horseman and a legion
dispose a Roman spear and raze Viroconium
smack a legion in Byzantium

IBT : lose a sword on defense

we get monarchy through the great library, revolt immediately -> 5 turns
construction comes in, too

8) 330AD : kill a Roman archer, 3MC, Spanish sword, Hittite spear

raze Hubishna for 12 gold, killing 2 Hittite spears
raze Byzantium disposing a spear and an archer

IBT : no fights

9) 340AD : kill 1 Spanish spear and sword, 2 3MCs, 1 Spanish spear, losing one sword
1 legion is killed in Cumae

IBT : no fights

10) 350AD : kill 2 Spanish spears and a sword losing one sword
dispose a 3MC and generate a leader -> army

load an AC and immediately realize my mistake. We just have 2 vet ACs and 2 elite ones. It will take 10 turns to fill this army.:wallbash:

smack 2 spears and raze Cumae

a Portuguese spear vanishes

There are two cats in Kish with which I bombarded Spanish galleys. Sometimes they drop units at Erech, sometimes the galleys pass and sail along our coastline.
One AC army is now in Hittite territory. We just took three workers where it is now, that is why the army is in that position.

We kept expanding in our SE, but we are running out of settlers. After the anarchy is over we will need to switch some builds to settlers.

we get monarchy through the great library, revolt immediately -> 5 turns

lurker's comment: Shouldn't you have waited for a few cities to grow above size 6 first? Now you'll lose a bunch of gpt to unit support.

Ouch, those 3MC's are invincible! They must be :spear: in disguise!

Nice expansion in the SE. :goodjob:

Choxorn, we have an unusually large gold reserve for this point in the game, and we aren't spending anything on research since we've got the GLib, so Mark was right to make the switch to monarchy immediately without worrying about unit costs.

I see... But what happens when it runs out?

Lurker:

You either cut back on research or you hopefully increase the unit support with more towns. You cannot do much about getting above size 6, unless they are on rivers, as aqua's are going to be a slow build right now.

Looks good. I think unit costs will be managable since we have the GLib for a while more. I expect we will even have decent money when it does expire for deficit research provided we can keep expanding.

Preturn- 2 more turns of anarchy. 4 Spanish plus 4 more Hittites around Kuara. 1 settler available and a pair queued up. Can’t tell, but there looks to be a difference in border colors, so we may have another civ just beyond the fog to the south.

IBT- The Spanish and Hittites mill about. No combat.

360AD- Load the second vet AC into the army. Bombard and kill Spanish sword and spear. First AC Army kills 2 spears and an archer and razes Harran that also has horses. Eliminate two workers. Spot a Spanish fur colony to the west. Mersa Brega founded. 3rd Sword Army moves next to Hittite town and finds Byzantine sword. So we have a new enemy.

IBT- Spanish bring quite a few more units into our area. Despotism>Monarchy.

370AD- First order of business is to put everyone to work. 23 gpt right now. 2nd AC Army kills legion and spear and Lutetia burns. Adds a Portugese archer in for good measure. 1st AC Army overruns Spanish fur colony. Then it kills Hittite settler pair and finds the Hittite capital. Load an elite AC into the army. 3rd Sword Army destroys Hittite town of Ivriz for 13 gold. A further inspection of the borders I mentioned earlier turned out to be the same Portugese one.

IBT- Interesting, the Hittites are actually at war with Portugal too. :D Portugese spear is bumped off by a 3MC. Learn currency and on to the next age. And we draw feudalism as our free tech. That’s sweet.

380AD- 3MC dies at Kutha. Damage and kill 4 Spanish swords. Get MGL. Check on the military status and get the dreaded F3 bug. So now I get to do it over again. Not exactly the same sequence, but close. Get the MGL and build army. Upgrade a couple swords to MI. Killed 4 swords, a spear and redlined 4 more units. Lost one sword I think I may have upgraded pre-crash. Oh well. AC Army kills 2 spears defending Zaragoza. 1st AC Army pillages Hittite lands, they had a nice start location too, 2 cows at Hatussas and 2 more next door at Emar. Upgrade one EW* to pike.

IBT- More 3MCs in view, no combat.

390AD- 1st AC Army kills 2 Hittite spears and Emar burns. 3rd AC Army kills sword and Zaragoza burns. MI kills Hittite spear at Erech. Lose MI to Spanish spear. MI Army kills it off. Hittite archer dies at Kutha. 2 of our armies heal this turn.

IBT- One 3MC dies attacking a EW. Significantly more Spanish swords appearing now, 14 in play.

400AD- 2nd AC bleeds heavily attacking reg Port spear. Kills it and a second at Lagos. City burns, but army in the red at 6hp. Sword army kills reg Hittite spear at Alalah but loses quite a few hp there as well. I take some time to assess where we’re headed here. The Spanish and Hittite lands are really the direction to head it would seem. The lands to the southeast are not very attractive, and so I pull settlers and workers to the west.

IBT- The Spanish decide not to be so dumb this time, and shift their swords away from our kill zone, threatening Kuara instead.

410AD- 3rd AC Army kills 2 spears and burns Pamplona. 3rd Sword Army kills two spears and Alalah burns. 1st MI Army kills 2 Spanish swords. 2 3MCs killed at Susa. MI at Kuara take out 3 Spanish swords. Shift some cats around Kutha and Kua.

IBT- The Hittites send 6 3MCs from the fog in the direction of Kutallu in the south.

420AD- 3rd AC Army kills 2 Spanish settler pairs. At Kutha, kill 8 Spanish swords and a spear. The Hittite move will take some doing to counter. Take 3 EWs from Kutha and shift them to Susa. IBT will be interesting, but unless we get a bad RNG, we should hold.

IBT- Spanish swords gets an archer* and MI left uncovered. 3MCs are back in large numbers again. 4 die at Incense, at the cost of one EW. Portugal lands horse at Apisala.

430AD- 1st AC Army kills 2 Hittite spears and an archer and Aleppo is burned. Sword kills Port horse at Apisala. At Kutha, kill 3 Spanish spears and 4 swords. Kill 2 3MCs at Incense. Kutallu will be vacated so the EWs can be brought forward to protect the cats. A lot of misses. 3rd Sword Army kills another 3MC.

IBT- Quiet

440AD- Kill 4 3MCs and lose an e* horse. Benghazi founded. 3rd AC Army kills spear at Ankuwa but goes red. 1st AC Army kills Hittite archer and 3MC.

IBT- A last weak attempt by the 3MCs fails around Incense. There may be more coming through the fog, but none visible.

450AD- 1st MI Army kills 2 Spanish spears and razes Valladolid. At Incense, kill 2 more 3MCs and a spear. The threat in that area has been eliminated. 2nd AC Army kill 2 port spears and an archer by Sagres. Sword Army kills Spanish sword and spear at Logrono. 1st AC Army pillages Hittite horse at Adana. At 10hp, it will need to be healed up a bit. 3rd AC Army is forted on a hill at 5hp and needs rest, but the AI was content to leave it alone last IBT. And done.

Post turn. Worked the armies quite a bit, so they do need time to heal. We have 9 settlers now, so can begin to expand again. There are 7 settlers in the area around Benghazi. We very much need to reinforce the Southeast frontier around Mersa Brega and Tutub. 2-3 horses could eliminate any of our single city defenders in the area.

I have not done any infra building, we will need to do that fairly soon. 1218 gold in the bank plus a modest 29gpt. The Byzantines have sent nothing against us at all, so not sure if they are busy fighting elsewhere. One thing which is apparent is that there is a very long front we may need to be defending at some point potentially from Kadesh in the west to Babil in the east. As well as we're doing, an SoD could give us problems at some point if we have to defend all of this front.

Check on the military status and get the dreaded F3 bug. So now I get to do it over again.

lurker's comment: If this the bug I think it is, where you try to check the military strengths of other civs, and suddenly the game refuses to respond to the mouse, but willl respond to the keyboard, then there's a way to make the bug less annoying, by saving your game with keyboard shortcuts (It's possible) before quitting.

lurker's comment: Ah. I am unfamiliar with this bug, but the Military Advisor bug I mentioned has sure happened to me several times...
