GR20 - Genocide AWE vs 30 Civs (try 2)

lurker's comment: Posting to subscribe and to wish good luck.

Also, happy birthday vmxa! Already 62! :faint:

Nice progress. :goodjob:

Yes, :bday:, Vmxa.

I'm working on a long, slow round in SGOTM13, and I don't want to make this game wait on that one. So I'll ask for a skip and re-enter the rotation here when I finish there, if that's all right.

townsPreturn: Settle a new frontline town of Pootles and change some builds - starting Aquaducts in our largest towns. Sumer will build a settler as it is too big for its happiness.

IBT: Win 2 TMC battles at Pootles

460 AD: Armies mostly resting this turn. They are all injured at the moment.
Destroy a Portuguese town in the Desert.

IBT: More 2 TMC wins. Watch the Portuguese and Hittites fight one another.

470 AD: Destroy a Hittite town in the Desert.

IBT: Sun Tzu completed by Russia.

480 AD: Armies are more healthy now.
Found 2 towns. Attack Hittite town Adana and raze it.

490 AD: Raze Logrono to the South (Spanish)

IBT: Watch Spain and Portugal Fight. No wonder no Portuguese are coming at us.

500 AD: Another town built to the west.
Ankuwa (Hittite) razed in the NW.

IBT: Landing near Apisalsa

510 AD: Two more new towns. GPT is up to +47. I have also been building Markets, I think we have enough units now (especially with the AI wars).

IBT: Get Monotheism and Engineering.

520 AD: Four towns and our first market increases gold by 20

530 AD: Attacks by Spanish swords

IBT: Landing near Apisalsa.

540 AD: Attack Hittite Capitol and Santiander

550 AD: Santiander(Spanish) town Razed. There is now no town between us and the Spanish Capitol.
Hittite Capitol Razed and 5 units killed but it knocks our Sword Army to 5 HP. Hittites only have Archer and TMC so shouldn't be attacked.4

Notes:
At the end I checked Settlers and we only have one! I didn't realize I was building so few - so many cities were building Markets and settled a lot. I would switch some cities over to settlers or rush some partly built ones. I was having main towns with specialists build them as well (so towns too large) though being over size 7 is worthwhile.

GPT up to 88 with most markets still to be built. We should be able to get over 100 without much difficulty even with more units built.

My plan was to attack Spain and Hittites taking their land for a new front line. See picture.

VERY quiet from south. Portugal is definitely at war and I bet Byzantines are too as they only sent 1 Spear.

The Save

looking good. I would try and concentrate on the Spanish as I don't particularly fancy their UU.

Got it

save

Preturn
as we are short of settlers, rush 2 and swap some small cities to settlers

IT Hittites lose 3 archers

1.560AD
defeat 4 units, armies heal and one advances towards Hittite land. I want to take out the north first

2.570AD
kill 1st spear in Madrid, 2 spears die in Tarsus
defeat 4 more units in the field

3.580AD
defeat 3 spears in Madrid, still stands
3 units are killed and Tarsus razed, take out a Hittite settler pair as well
take out 2 more Hittite units and bring a settler into position
take out 4 Spanish troops and gain another army
fail to take out Oporto after losing a sword

4. 590AD
found a new city, take out a stray mace
start to attack Spanish Hattusha

5. 600AD
its high time that we get back to military production as the south is really too lightly defended
its getting tough to attack Spanish cities as they have pikes
manage to take out 3 pikes and raze Hattusha, armies need to heal badly now
found another city in the north

gain an army while taking out Spanish units, I leave this army empty in the hope we might gain knights
found city in the south, a little risky though

start to attack Ugarit

6.610AD
attack Ugarit, but town still stands, armies have to mainly heal. take out a few units

7.620AD
Ugarit falls after taking out another spear, Tyrana is next

8. 630AD
Spain shows up with 5 units at the front, manage to take out 4
raze Tyrana after taking out 2 units
found new city in the north
take out some strays and get yet another army, leave it empty as well

IT Portuguese actually land a redlined horse
a few more markets are completed

9. 640AD
take out 4 Spanish units near our new city, start to attack Toledo only defended by spears

10. 650AD
raze Toledo after taking out 3 more units move on to Barcelona and take out a pike

we look quite comfortable now and more maces and pikes are coming online
We should try and take out Spain firs as we don't want to face their UU. From there, we can expand southwest
2 armies are empty and we might want to wait for knight with them
we do have 7 settlers now and some are reaching the north soon

gr20650.jpg

I like the 3 new armies. Agree waiting for Knights makes sense.

The Hittites and Rome are very weak.

Portugal is growing weaker while Byzantines are growing stronger. I bet those two are at war as well. We may need to be ready for a Byz rush if the war ends.

Spain is still a major power but we have her core isolated and should be able to take her out in the next 10-20 turns. Her Iron is near Barcelona, so taking that city will definitely weaken them.

Our power graph is at 50% now so we are as powerful as all our enemies. Unit costs is about 100 gold.

I am suprised we haven't met more civs with 3 Lux on our continent. If we do the Glib may expire suddenly. Libraries may not be a bad investment soon.

Unfortunately there is another iron way up north (next to Vitoria) as well as 2 more horses visible. I guess we simply need to take them out completely. Let's hope they don't acquire invention before that.

lurker's comment: What's so bad about Spain getting Invention?

lurker's comment: Losing Iron will prevent them from building more 4-attack MDIs, but if they get Invention, they'll still be able to build more 4-attack units (i.e. longbows). The conquest will be a bit easier if the Spanish are stuck with AA units.

my bad, I thought Spain gets their UU with invention, but IIRC i's astronomy. We should be safe then.

markh, don't worry, the turns play pretty fast

lurker's comment: Yeah, but there's Iron back in Vitoria, so it doesn't matter much- Longbows won't save them.

IBT : nothing

1) 660AD : kill a pike, 2 spears and an MDI in Barcelona, but the city still stands
dispose a few single units and get another leader -> army

IBT: defeat a Spanish MDI on defense

Portugal lands a horse and archer at Babil

2) 670AD : kill another pike and MDI in Barcelona and raze the city for 18 gold
a spear goes down in Oporto and this city burns also

IBT : nothing

3) 680AD : kill 2 pikes in Madrid and the first spear appears

IBT : the Iroquois city "Tours" completes Knight's Templar

4) 690AD : another pike and spear die in Madrid, but still it doesn't fall

IBT : nothing

5) 700AD : kill a pike and spear in Murcia razing the city for 8 gold and 3 cats
another pike and 2 spears go down in Madrid

IBT : a Portuguese horse dies attacking a city

the first dromons appear in Spanish waters

6) 710AD : kill a pike and spear in Asturias and raze the city for 5 gold
another pike and speat in Madrid

Caesaraugusta falls

IBT : nothing

7) 720AD : finally we have another enemy. I spot a Korean town in the south and declare war
there are some dark blue borders I have not seen before, but no new appearances in the diplo screen

kill 1 pike 2 spears and 3 MDIs in Madrid and it is gone. With it The Colossus is destroyed

dispose 3 spears in Losbon and the Portuguese also have to move their capital

IBT : nothing

8) 730AD : armies mainly healing, so just picking off some stray units

IBT : uh, almost lose a settler pike combo to a Spanish MDI, but the pike fights the MDI off

9) 740AD : kill 2 pikes in Vitoria and raze the city

IBT : 2 foreign units die attacking exposed units

10) 750AD : get another leader razing Guimares
kill a pike and 2 spears and raze Seville

In the former Spanish core there are only two cities left. All in all it is very quiet and we have a lot of waste land in our SW. We now have 4 empty armies. No new techs in my set. :(

So back to me again. Got it.

Update. Got 9 in and will finish last turn tomorrow. Still waiting on an advance, and eliminated the Hittites.

markh, don't worry, the turns play pretty fast

Heh. Trying to defend a front against the Spanish once they have their UU is a nightmare. They have insane movement capabilities.

Preturn- A little MM needed in the cities. I see the Babylonian settler pair and even though it’s not on F4, go ahead and make contact. Declare.

IBT- Roman cat bombards an AC.

760AD- 2nd AC Army kills 3 Spanish pikes and Valencia is burned. Kill Spanish spear by Spanish Dying Ground. Kill Spanish MI with elite MI and get an MGL. I notice something strange, we’re waiting on chivalry with 4000+ gold, but we don’t have a single horseman that we would be able to upgrade. Switch builds to put 8 horses in queue. Kill Byz spear and capture Hittite cat. Kill 2 Bab spears and their new town of Nina is destroyed.

IBT- Lose elite* red archer.

770AD- Not much action. Shuffle stuff around.

IBT- No combat but Port horses approaching.

780AD- 1st MI Army kill 2 Spanish spears and Santiago burns. 2nd AC Army kills Spanish MI. Elite MI kills Korean spear and 2 more MI kill 2 horses. Leiria has 2 Port spears and it burns.

IBT- Korea and Portugal lose a horse attacking an MI.

790AD- 3rd AC Army kills Byz spear and Nicomedia burns. 3 Hittite spears and an archer die and Karatepe is gone. Kill Bab settler pair. Found Sfax. Rush some settlers.

IBT-

800AD- Kill 9 Byz swords by Sfax, but lose 3MI as a pesky Byz spear standing on a hill fights a brave battle. Kill another Byz red spear. Kill Korean settler pair

IBT- Lose an MI to a Byz sword.

810AD- Kill Spanish spear, Korean archer and 3 Byz swords.

IBT- Watch dromons bombard the Hittite capital of Kadesh.

820AD- Kill 2 Hittite spears at Kadesh and they are gone from the map. :) Kill Port settler pair. Kill Korean spear and archer by New Ur.

IBT- Byz swords can’t really decide where to go, hang around Sfax.

830AD- Plant more cities and take out a few strays.

IBT- Koreans trying to send a pile of archers to the east.

840AD- Kill 2 Korean spears and 4 archers in the vicinity of new Ur.

850AD- MI kills Byz spear. Amorium destroyed in the desert. Get 4 more Byz swords. Then kill about 4-5 Korean archers near New Ur. And done.

Post turn: The town of Incense has 4 empty armies and a 5th almost there. There are also 21 horsemen available for future upgrade there, so as soon as we get chivalry, we can upgrade and fully load 5 knight armies. Or we could load one with AC. The former Spanish lands have 2 fully healed armies guarding the neighborhood. I focused on straightening the front lines, and we have troops that can press forward. The AI was building towns about as fast as they could be razed for a bit. 5000+ gold in the bank now.

Haven’t seen so much as a bowman from Babylon. Maybe they are at war too. The AI is so weak it hardly seems like emperor. Korean archers and Byz swords are the only real threat, if you can call it that. C’est la vie.
