GR6 - Persia II - AW Demigod.

I'll play this tomorrow morning.

It appears as though we are alone on this island with the Vikes. The Vikes are credited with having more land than we do, so I'd guess they have 4 cities besides their capital. I can see one and then maybe 2-3 more in the south.

We're going to have ~15 turns of building post-Lit, depending on whether the Palace cost goes up before we discover the tech.

I'm leaning to not pressing the attack so much after Trondheim in favor of trying to get 4-5 settler groups out on my turns. We are 16 units over our support limit, and I doubt the Vikings will be able to muster much with the scattered cities they will have remaining. They appear to have neither Iron nor Horses, and they aren't going to make it to Invention. We can handle Spears and Archers any time we please, so I think we're better off to get more cities down ASAP.

It will be interesting to see how quickly we can reach Monarchy. If nobody floats by we may be able to push workers and have our lands almost entirely improved before the reduced unit support of Monarchy becomes a factor.

Yes, I was just about to say the same thing. Carefully used, our army and its four accompanying Immortals may be able to take the remaining Viking cities almost unaided.

GR6 - AWDG Persia

750 BC (0)
Arabs own the Pyramids, no other wonders completed. Trondheim may not have to be kept, we'll see.

Swap Wheat to a Spear, then will build a Settler there. I think we can found 3 cities+ this round. Gordium stays on Spear to support the settling effort. Pre-build can be significantly slowed if necessary, and can also be sped up.

Don't like the Barracks in Bactra but we really don't have anything else to build, and eventually we'll produce troops there.

Take a leader shot and no hit. Cover Elite Immortal with Elite Spear, on a Hill.

IT - Win with Spear and promote to Elite.

730 BC (1)
Found Sidon and start the Heroic Epic as pre-build for FP. Shouldn't get so far along as to be problematic if we have to bail on the Great Library pre-build.

Slide units forward to attack Trondheim. Won't happen for another couple of turns.

710 BC (2)
Build Settler in Persep, will escort to desired site.

690 BC (3)
Furs connected, lux down to 20%. Persep has to run a beaker-head for a turn, but the pre-build can be sped up.

670 BC (4)
Found Tyre.

Four quick victories later, Trondheim is captured. Very food-rich, should be a tremendous source of workers/settlers.

I think we can see all of the remaining Viking cities, scattered to the four corners of the wind.

650 BC (5)
Leave Warrior in Trondheim and start to move the Army out.

630 BC (6)
Wheat pops a settler, will send him north. How about some leader love?

The secondary death squad moves out of Bactra. Let's see if the Vikes can be finished off on these turns. :)

Check that ... I see all three Viking cities, and the jungle below therm. We may not be alone on this island.

610 BC (7)
Oracle and ToA go by the boards. Lit in 1 turn.

Burn Copenhagen to the ground. May have to double an Immortal back towards Trondheim as the Vikes have an Archer on the roads.

Spot a 2nd lux (Spices) available in the Southern jungle.

590 BC (8)
Lit in, set to CB in 4.

Hanging Gardens and Colossus go in the cascade. Merge native worker to Arbela and Great Library due in 13. Lux to 30% to allow 6th worker in city.

pRNG rears its ugly head and lose Elite Immortal to unfortified 2-HP Spear. Northern Invasion has to be postponed a turn to re-group.

570 BC (9)
Lose Warrior and have to abandon Trondheim. A Viking Archer came out of the fog and outnumbered us. I guess we'll have to get another 5th ring city now.

550 BC (10)
Destroy Oslo and gain 4 slaves.

Final Notes:
There is a settler north of Gordium that would have founded a city on that spot, if I had put roads on the correct squares.

There is a 2nd settler beside Sidon who did not have any particular destination. Maybe the Hill S-S-E on the coast?

We have the last two visible Viking cities in range, but neither is the Viking capital. I think the new capital (Birka) is North of Aarhus.

One problem with the early Immortal Army is that we have so few promotions in our other units. We may have to attack with the Elite Spears to try to generate leaders. The Vikings have some units out, but we're now in a mode of out-running them to cities so they'll go poof.

We are looking good for some major settling. I think we need to keep our eye out for other civs and not get suprised if we find one. Keep potential border cities well garrisoned, have some sentries to give advance warning, and build walls. If we are alone these things won't hurt.

We may also get ships showing up to land on our coasts.

I can take it after bedhead, no issue

Oops, sorry. I have a folder for subscribed threads labeled "Current SGs" and this one wasn't added yet, so I skipped over giving notice. Anyway, T_McC is right, the computer that can handle Civilization is experiencing some problems at the moment. It is getting along in the years though, and before this happened I was planning to buy (with a little help from my parents as my high school graduation present) a computer before heading off to college. So the timing wasn't too bad, and I should be back in three weeks or so.

I took a look at the game. The big question is where are the horses? I see additional iron sources. We have a second luxury in the south.

With the Vikings crippled I think we will need to start exploring more. I like the spear next to the hut out exploring. We should map that section of the world, as I would be shocked to find a civ there. I would also like to map the area past Aarhus. At this point I am even willing to risk mapping south of Stavanger.

I don't want to go to the other landmass with just slow units.

Pre-Turn
nth much to do

1.530BC
found Sardis as suggested
autoraze Stavanger for a slave, Aarhus is not the capital, that means there must be another city left
reduce science

IT 3 Viking archers assemble, we get CB, next the wheel, we need to know where are the horses

2.510BC
attack Aarhus, lose an immortal, autoraze it and discovere a new source of iron

IT lose an immortal to a spear that came out of the fog, now 4 archers together
Mongols finish Mausoleum

3. 490BC
nothing much, but spot Viking border

IT archers retreat

4. 470BC
found Samaria in the south

IT get the FP message

5.450BC
attack Birka and promote immortal to elite killing a spear

IT we get the wheel, WC next

6. 430BC
good news, there are horses next to Gordium, there is also a second source
attack and take Birka, then see another town further northeast

IT lose elite spear against archer at Birka

7. 410BC
found Hamadan

8. 390BC
defeat spear and archer

9. 370BC
defeat another 2 archers

IT we get WC, next is HBR in 4

10. 350BC
defeat 1 archer and march towards Viking town
we should be able to take out that town in 2 turns and hopefully destroy the Vikings, we have 2 curraghs out exploring
we will get the GLib next turn
building a few settlers currently, we should try and settle quickly

The next 10 turns will tell a lot. If that curragh proves the jungle is the edge of our territory, then we know we are going to be forces into landing on another continent earlier than I have ever tried in AW.

With the pillaging limitations we still have a very difficult task even with the Vikings all but dead.

Now what use is the Great Library if we only know one civ? We will have some very tricky decisions to make soon.

Preturn: Now that we have wheel we can see the horses. We are ok there - having two sources. One is within a single expansion of one of our towns.

IBT: Great Library is ours.

330 BC: Move the Currach and see a border.

IBT:What? No techs from the Glib? What a gyp :D

310 BC:
Goint to stop the game to discuss the following:

We are about to kill the Vikings. Do you want to go meet the new civ before doing so?

Cons:
They will be able to reach us with boats and so we will have to deal with landings.
We may lose our Curragh (It will be next to the border first but then sink)

Pros:
Possible tech from the GLib now.
We will probably meet them soon in any event

If we wanted to be squirrely we might be able to block their crossing.

---------------------------------
I think my vote is to meet them.

Here is the map. I will continue tomorrow night to give time for comments

GR6_BC310.JPG

I think the Vikings can't be that far and don't have education yet, so meeting a second CIV before Vikings are dead will gain us some techs.
then we need to search for a second CIV. We need to settle down south soon to be able to fend off the landings.
