I need a new graphics card for my PC but the thing is I don't know if I have any AGP slots in my PC. Is there any way of telling?

If it turns out that I don't have AGP does anyone know where I can get a 64MB PCI card pretty cheap from a UK based website.

Thanks a lot

Wrong forum. Shld go to the technical one.

Anyway, one way is to open up your casing and see if you have an AGP slot. Most ppl would have one that's already occupied by their exisiting graphics card.

Refer to the manual to see if you have an AGP slot is another way. But you'll still need to open up your casing if you're not sure if it's occupied or not. ;)

OK I opened up the case of my PC and I realised I have no idea what a AGP slot looks like
What I found was two types of slot a couple of PCI slots with my Voodoo 3 (Damn 3dfx going out of buisness) in one of them and a slightly smaller port I don't think that this is an AGP slot because my modem is in that port
Any chance of some help?

The AGP slot is always the most extreme to the right, it is usually brown while PCI is white, it is about the same size, different form and location on board.
AGP is unique, there is only one of it on every board, pci are small and there are a few of them, and if you have an older motherboard you also probably have some few fat and long ISA pots to the far left.
In my sketch, the one to the far left is ISA, the few small ones are pci, and the one to the right is AGP, about as big as PCI, maybe even smaller, differently positioned.
Ill try to do a sketch for you:

There is a slightly smaller brown port but my Modem is plugged into it. Is that normal? I would rather get an AGP card than PCI because AGP cards are so much easier to find
Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for the Pic

Modem ported on AGP... never heard of that one... any more details would help me to help you :)

OK I opened up the case again and I made my own sketch of the ports
At the top is a brown port split in two with the modem plugged into the left half of it
Below that are 3 PCI slots one with my Voodoo3 card plugged in
I hope this helps

If there is any other information I can provide just tell me OK:)

The brown port split in two is definately the AGP port.. first time I hear of a modem connected to an AGP port. weird.

I don't think that is an AGP slot. I think it is an AMR Slot (Audio/Modem/Riser?) or a CNR (I can't for the life of me remember what it means). It is a way for computer manufactures to cave money by putting the Modem and Video card on the same card. Unfortunately they also leave out a normal AGP port to save money. You don't sound like you want to get deep into computers so I would suggest taking the computer to a local computer dealer and asking them to upgrade it for you, just to make sure you don't have a AGP slot. Now, if you could take a picture, scan it, convert it into a small enough .jpg, upload it here then I would be able to make a better guess as to what the port is.

BTW, I think that AGP Pro has two ports....but the second one is much smaller (but I have been known to be wrong).

I think that is a CNR slot. the picture below. The slot to the farthest left is the CNR slot.
Communicator Network Riser is what CNR means :) Link
AMR means Link

From that pic I don't think I have an AGP slot (Damn It  ) but I have found a decent PCI card so it looks like I'll have to get it

Thanks for all the help :)

Damn....offline for 20 hours...and I miss this decussion!!!

AMR is Audio Modem Riser card. A cheap sound/modem alternative. I have one on my board...but I don't use it. I have 1xAGP, 2xPCI, 1xAMR I just use the AGP for Video, and 1 PCI for regular modem. (Onboard sound and NIC.)

But PCI Video Cards aren't that bad...

Yeah but it is damn hard to find a decent PCI card that is cheap It took me hours to find a decent one but I finally did (All I got from Search engines was "AGP this, AGP that" LOL) I ordered a GeForce2 mx400 64MB PCI card. It will do me nicely :)

That's the same card I have....except it's AGP. ;)
And it has TV-OUT.

No complaints...but under XP the OpenGL/Glide support isn't very good. Win2k has much better support....with the NVIDIA 12.41 drivers....not the new 21.xx or 23.xx...they are XP/2k hybrid drivers....and take a little away.

Pricewatch is ok.

So long as you buy from a reputable company. Twice I tried to buy a computer from Companies on Pricewatch...and twice, no one responded to my e-mails!!

I mean come on...I was buying a whole system...AND it happened twice. When I finally got a response, and got my system, the RAM was bad. The IDE cables pulled apart, and the video card caused a lot of lock ups.

Pricewatch = Bad Memories.
Use Pricewatch as a guage, only to how low you CAN pay. Then go buy it somewhere else. ;)
