What is the greatest football-related song and/or chant?

For me it is Nessum Dorma sung by Pavarotti at the Italia '90 World Cup. Admittedly it's not your terrace classic but it has got to be the most classy football song. Also it would have been predictable if I said 'Three Lions'.

My second choice or 'runner-up' is,
Who ate all the pies?
Who ate all the pies?
You fat "illegitimate child",
You fat "illegitimate child",
You ate all the pies.

Slightly less classy than nessum dorma. :D

Almost all of the US chants are good but this is my favorite.

Can You Hear (Jamaica) Sing?

(change name of team when needed)
Can you hear Jamaica sing? No-O! No-O!
Can you hear Jamaica sing? No-O! No-O!
Can you hear jamaica sing, I CAN'T HEAR A F***ING THING!
No, No, No

I wasn't aware that was a uniquely American chant. In fact, I could have sworn it was invented on British terraces.

Another one of my favourites is a Newcastle United chant concerning Peter Reid, the ex-Sunderland manager. It has now been borrowed by many other fans.

Cheer up Peter Reid, Oh what can it mean, to a,
sad Mackem b**t**d. And his, s**t football team?

Perhaps SupperSalmon can confirm that at a recent home game against Arsenal, Charlton fans were found to be singing:

"Who let the Frogs out ? Who ? Who ?"

That may well be the case but afaik that was first heard at Filbert Street (yes that long ago!!)

However he may wish to confirm whether some away fans at the Valley, when a bride and groom came on to the pitch at half time, were singing "You dont know what youre doing".

To the tune of 'Feed The World':

"Feed the Scousers! Let them know it's Christmas time."

Makes me laugh every time. And my mum's from Liverpool, FWIW.

It must have been the match at highbury :D

but we all sang to Alex Fergerson in September

'Fergies gonna have to sell his horse, Fergies gonna have to sell his horse'

True as well i was one of the people singing

The most memorable song for me was when the fans in Utah (2002 winter olympics) started singing 'O Canada' as our mens hockey team put the finishing touches on the victory over the Americans.

I was crying tears of joy into my beer as I was singing along.

The BBC tried hard last Saturday not to let the crowd chants be audible when they covered the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park. Even so, there certainly seemed to be a refrain towards the end of the match:

"Where the F**k's your treble gone ?"

Not quite an Oh Canada moment, I'll grant you, but it made me smile.

Hmmm, those would be Dutch, and thus not too useful for this forum...
Anyway:

Using the melody of Popeye the sailor man:

Van Persie de homofiel (peh-peh)
Van Persie de homofiel (peh-peh)
Van Persie, die schele, de homosexuele
Van Persie de homofiel (peh-peh)

Once you know scheel / schele means squinting (and yes, Robin van Persie indeed squints a tiny bit)......

I also liked this one, after the police had prevented a possible kidnapping of Mateja Kezman by the maffia:

1,2,3,4,5,6,7, Waar is Mateja Kezman gebleven? (Where is/has MK gone)
Hij is niet hier, hij is niet daar (he is not here, he is not there)
Hij zit bij de mafia.

I could now say that it's our club's traditional song, but I think in general it is "Three Lions". And I already thought so before they made it our club's new song...

When it comes to chants there's the classic "Zieht den Bayern die Lederhosen aus" (more or less "rip off their leather pants").

And there are the very odd customs, like chanting "Arschloch, Wichser, Hurensohn" (a*shole, wanker, son of a...) everytime the opponent's keeper kicks off the ball.

How the f. could I forget????

Schade Deutschland, alles ist vorbei, alles ist vorbei, alles ist vorbei!

Furthermore I remember Aron Winter (?) in 1988, singing:
Lothar, Lothar, du hast verloren Lothar!

Hullo Hullo
Hullo! Hullo! We are the billy boys. Hullo! Hullo! You'll know it by the/our/? noise... It goes on.

Or

Follow Follow
Though the streets be broad and narrow, we'll follow, we will. Follow we will, Follow we will. Though the streets be broad and narrow, we'll follow, we will. We will follow in the footsteps of our team. Follow Follow we will follow Rangers, Everywhere Anywhere we will follow on. Dundee hamiliton even up to Aberdeen... It goes on :D

You should note those words are probably wrong.

-Valley Floyd Road

Valley Floyd Road
The mist rolling in from the Thames
My desire is always to be found at
Valley Floyd Road

From Selhurst to West Ham
Many years did we roam
Forever dreaming of returning home
To follow our team every year we aspired
Singing Valley Floyd Road
In the Covered End choir

Valley Floyd Road
The mist rolling in from the Thames
My desire is always to be found at
Valley Floyd Road

The fifth of December
Nineteen ninety two
The exile is over our dreams have come true
Charlton at home there's no more I require
Singing Valley Floyd Road
My only desire

Valley Floyd Road
The mist rolling in from the Thames
My desire is always to be found at
Valley Floyd Road

and

Build a bonfire

Build a bonfire
Build a bonfire
Put the Palace at the top
Put the Millwall in the middle and
Burn the f**king lot

I think it is about time I unleashed the single greatest chant ever to have been produced by mankind in its entire history (not including between 1253 and 1321).

You'll Never Walk Alone
Walk on,
Walk on,
With the hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone,
Walk on,
Walk on,
With the hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone.

So good it's on our emblem.

"Follow Follow we will follow Rangers
Up the Falls, Derry's Walls, we will follow on
Dundee, Hamilton, F*ck the Pope in the Vatican
And if they go to Dublin we will follow on"

or how about...

We hijacked the pope-mobile,
sprayed it red, white and blue,
we took it derry's walls and up to shankill too,
we took it to sandy row to see King Billy on his horse,
Where he knelt and kissed King Billy's feet and the Horse's Arse!
