I felt like making a poll about this :) Which horror story would you think is the greatest ever written, and why?

I included works by some of my favourite authors, but you can suggest other ones as well.

For me the Recluse of Bayswater, by Arthur Mahen, is a story that although includes some flaws, manages to reach a powerfull climax. It is the story of a young law student who lives a hermit's life, and gets ill. He gets treated with a potion, prescribed by the pharmacist, but due to a tragic mistake it is not the one meant to be produced. The results are catastrophic. Perhaps i was influenced in my decision by the fact that i first discovered it one evening in the university's library, and read it there, while outside the colours were turning to black :)

My second favourite is the horror at Dunwich, by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Again it has its flaws, but i remember feeling afraid the first time i read it, and that counts for much in this genre.

My third choice would be the Horla, by Guy De Maupassant. This short story has three different versions, but i prefer the earliest one. It is about a man's descent into madness. I especially like the fact that De Maupassant mentions the weird images that begin to appear in the mirror he is looking at, as a first sign of his state.

I decided to include Kafka's Metamorphosis as well, although it can be read as a complete allegory (but then again everything can, to an extent, be read as an allegory). The author himself had characterised it as scary.

And what about you? Which story of horror do you like the most? Remember to provide a small synopsis if you like and also mention why you are fond of it :)

I know there's got to be tons of awesome references in that video, but I enjoyed it for the hilarious insanity of it.

The thing that struck me most was the fact that the official was wearing a norwegian coat of arms on his jacket.

Doesn't anyone feel like nominating a story? :)

I have a great book of Lovecraft stories, but I've only just read the beginning of it. I really liked Nyarlathotep, but I think I have to read The Call Of Cthulhu before I can really pass judgment.

I don't usually read scary stories so I voted for Kafka because JEW

Actually it's just because I thought the story was pretty good and I didn't read most of the other ones.

Not Kafka cuz GERMAN?
Helpful, true. But I don't think that the Czech Jew who lived in Austria-Hungary would identify himself as 'German'.

not so much a tale and thus I am not sure if it qualifies but I have always been particular to the Jabberwocky (the poem, not the movie)

I'd vote for "At the Mountain of Madness" by Lovecraft

I've a got a theory that if you told somebody with no knowledge of the 20th century a short outline of the history of 20th century, they would think you made it up, as it being to terrible to be real.

The Pit and the Pendulum. I still have nightmares about that one...

Edit: I thought of another one. I can't remember it's name, but basically there's a guy who falls in love with a girl who always wears a ribbon around her neck. He finally convinces her to take the ribbon off and her head falls off and she dies... I don't know; that always got to me for some reason.

I'd vote for "At the Mountain of Madness" by Lovecraft

With the caveat that I have limited experience in the field, I'd second that.
