Greatest Songs in the World

IMHO the hallmark of a truly great, as opposed to clever, confronting or poignant (which the world of songwriting is definitely the better off for) lyric is the ability to convey emotion. To listen to the song and say "Yeah man, that's exactly how I felt". The risk for the writer is if the listener simply hasn't felt that way, it falls flat

Well I'm pretty sure my mates south of the Mason Dixon line know exactly what the great man is feeling here. I almost get homesick remembering the greatest 2 weeks of my life in the spiritual home of (my) music.

Kill the Poor lacks the subtlety that makes HIC great. First few listens and it's like "Wow, he sure is sticking it to that Khmer Rouge"

Then you listen a few more times and it's "WTH! He's sticking it at me! And he's right! Bastard!"

What is the song called in the start-up, in Gods and Kings?

It makes me not to start a game, just listen to it. It's not opera, it's something else.

Otherwise, Kate bush and Climbing up that hill is fantastic. Or whatever it's called.

Overall, Close to the Edge by Yes is the best piece ever made, with some runners up of Pink Floyd ( Shine on your crazy diamond) and the band Sky High.

subtlety?
it starts with "so you've been to school for a year or two and you know you've seen it all".

and in the chorus it tells you to go freck off to cambodia.

Notice the Pol Pot line at the end, apart from referring to the leader of the Khmer Rouge (Pol Pot aka Saloth Sar aka Brother Number 1), hes also referring to the rampant use of drugs (pot in this case) among the US troops in Indochina.

And I think by subtlety rugbyLEAGUEfan means he doesn't just sing war is bad mkay, they're killing eachother mkay and so on, like almost everyone 'till then. He puts it in a completely sarcastic storyline. It doesn't attack the Khmer Rouge regime as much as it attacks you. Its subtle because when you listen to it at first, you think its just about some 'Merican dude leaving for a "holiday" in Cambodia, but on closer inspection its about all of us in the "1st world", how we are completely ignorant to suffering of Cambodia yet we're worrying about being snazzy and getting a stereo. The song is probably linked to their other song "When Ya Get Drafted".

But by subtlenes I still stick with "Kill the poor" because its completely from a rich guys perspective, who thinks if we kill the poor we will solve all of our problems.

which is, you know, clear right from the very first line.
