Who do you think is the greatest writer in history?

Mine would easily be Edgar Allan Poe.

Aldous Huxley probably (considering my name how can I not pick him?).

Homer. The single most influential writer in all history.

Technically not a writer.

BTW, I almost picked 'em, but then thought about the question again.

Homer, whether you believe he was one person or many.... not so much for being a writer in our sense of the word, but for putting down a fantastic oral tradition... Homer was no writer, he was the father of literature

If I remember correctly (not sure about this) but there were people before Homer's time who created epic stories and literature... (again, I'm not sure)

we're talking about "the greatest"

Nevermind, I misread your quote, I thought you said Homer was the FIRST person to write literature. You said he was the Father of Literature. (Which I agree with)

Hi!

In my POV , Giovannio Boccachio (Decamerone,1315).

Have fun !

What's great ? Does it mean great style ? Great stories ? Can a writer be great because he wrote only one truly awesome novel ? Arrrarrgh, so many questions :)

Anyway, a great writer, both in style and stories, is Salman Rushdie. Especially Midnight's children.

Shakespeare, Cervantes, Dostoyevski. Not in any particular order.

Homer(I LOVE Heliad and Odyssey) and Herodotus for me.

Very tough to decide the Greatest of all time, but I would like to add Kurt Vonnegut to the list.
