Well, I've seen a couple forums where you can have your name emboldened, italicized, colored, and/or neoned (although of course you usually have to do something to get these benefits). Perhaps that's what TF's talking about.

Edit: But more likely he means user titles/ranks.

Thar's what I meant by different user name style. The style also affects who's online and other places where user names are shown.

On PHP BB (1.x and 2.x), usergroups can be assigned special privaleges.

It's good for teams, and similar things, where you can give the team a protected forum and then the team leader controls who is in his team. Better than passwords which might be lost in espionage

That's the way it works here. TF let's people see or not see a forum. Like the MSDG one, or the mod forums...
