grs1 - the roman legions

After writing I believe we have to find out on the iron soon. We don't want to be stuck with warriors.

I don't think a warrior rush will cut it. Well, lets get to IW ASAP. If we don't get iron in our borders we are going to have to have some cash for upgrading. I think it is 60g per warrior on the upgrade. Man, I didn't know Ceasar had it so tough.

Playing now.

Sorry for delay.

Not so much Room to Roman

grs1 3100BC

T1 3050
Exploring and trekking. Turn research to 10% Writing in 32 at +3gpt.

T2 2950
Exploring and trekking
Worker to BG W of Rome. Misclick and start mine instead of road and then realize that better route would have been to other BG.
Found Veii.

T3 2900
Celts order us out of Entremont so warrior is now headed north instead of east. Climbs mountain and finds more game forests, western warrior continues north and finds another Celtic warrior.

T3 2850
Rome gets its barracks and starts another warrior.
Russians are busy popping huts as they have learned Masonry, The Wheel and Mysticism. Celts are poor and stupid, still.

T4 2800
Exploring north and east.
Catherine has another city. Celts still have only capitol

T5 2750
Explorers moving north and east. New warrior from Rome heads west to Veii. Warrior at Veii heads west for some further local knowledge

T6 2700
Exploring and roading to Veii

T7 2670
Northbound warrior discovers new neighbor's border (light blue)
Eastbound warrior finds landbridge to east.
New warrior from Rome head toward St Pete just to keep an eye on things.

T8 2630
Westbound warrior hits coast. Eastbound warrior is gazing at what appears to be limitless dry plains. Northbound warrior moves toward new border but finds no one.

Rome grows and gets cranky so lux to 10 and starts settler as Entremont has grown to 2 so I expect a settler coming our way from there soon.

T9 2590
Eastbound warrior finds another new neighbor, borders and no people. Northbound warrior discovers elephant graveyard but no people inside borders. Eastbound warrior heads north along coast. Russia watcher finds spear in St Pete garrison.

T10 2550
Meet Lincoln in the North. He offers Mysticism for 100g. No thanks. He has Masonry and

The Wheel as well. Western Warrior in Russian territory meets Russian settler pair bound for coastal game and furs forests.
We meet the Japanese in the Orient. We can get Wheel for Alphabet but since we don't need horses let it pass and he has no money, so buying Mysticism or Masonry will do us
no good. Russia Watcher heads east to keep an eye on Celts.

Stop here to keep the years even.

Not much to report in a SitRep.

Celts and Russia close. America to the north and Japanese to the east across narrow landbridge from Celts

Treasury is fat and growing. Settler from Rome due in 2. I'm building the settler even though Rome drops to pop1 because I want to claim the eastlands before the Celts get there.

Not much change in map since dotmap made do no screenshots.

Good turns but the Russians are annoying me, and everybody!
We need to take out them as soon as that's possible (well, its Iron Working :( )

Good luck for the next player, GRS!!!

Pre Turn: no changes

IBT: Cathy moves warrior/worker pair towards us. She is going to settle near Veii again. We can't let her do that, she grows too powerfull. Veii grows to size 2.

2510BC: MM Veii, set worker to wheat as shield from bg goes to waste anyways. Growth in 7, Granary still in 12. Move warrior near Rome to St. Petersburg, move warrior from Veii towards warrior/settler pair.

IBT: warrior/settler move south-east

2470BC: Rome settler - warrior. We declare on Russia. Vet. Warrior kills spear in St. Petersburg and autorazes (-1 HP), vet. warrior kills reg. warrior, captures settler and promotes to elite (-2 HP). Worker starts last tile of road to Veii, slaves move to wheat. Settler walks towards mountains to north-east. Lux to zero (no more city of 3).

IBT: spot an american warrior to the north.

2430BC: exploring, working, moving, healing

IBT: nothing

2390BC: MM Veii, road completes start to mine bg, slaves road wheat, warrior from ex-St.Petersburg moves towards settler and spots barb in mountains.

IBT: Brennus settles 2nd city, it will overlap 1 mountain tile with our planned one. Barb. fortifies in mountain.

2350BC: Rome warrior - warrior, new warrior moves towards Veii as garrison. Elite and reg. warrior who enslaved settler meet in forest near russian border to enter in a forest tile. Antium is founded like planned and starts a warrior.

IBT: reg russian archer appears next to us.

2310BC: Cathy wants peace (I asked), she gives us Mysticism, The Wheel, Masonry, a worker and Kiew (that's all she could give), we take that. She is furios and as good as dead in 21 turns.

grs1-kathi_wants_peace.jpg

She now has horseback avail., but we don't want to pay for it. Kiew is switched to warrior, working the forest to get it in 5 turns (grassland with cow would be better, but we need the warrior fast, too risky up there without garrision). New slave starts road to Antium. We spot pink, it's Mao and he is broke, has 3 cities and misses Alphabet, The Wheel and Ceremonial Burial.

IBT: Barb. closes in on Antium.

2270BC: Slaves irrigate wheat. Barb. near Antium is killed (-1 HP), goody hut found sw of Veii, Rome switched to Granary (just for hut-poping), we spot dyes nw of Abe's lands. MM Veii again.

IBT: Kathi follows our warriors with an archer (she wants the goody hut, too)

2230BC: spot another hut south of Rome, hut near Veii gives us Horseback Riding

IBT: Archer still follows us, prolly a barb camp further south-east

2190BC: Cathi has Iron Working now. She wants all our gold (close to 300) and 4 gpt, but we don't want a new 20 turns deal with her, do we? Hut south or Rome gives us 25 gold, Rome switched back to settler.

IBT: The archer tiptoes behind us, Kathy rebuilds Minsk - this time next to the river where we wanted it anyways.

2150BC: Antium Warrior - Worker, Warrior south of rome heads back to Rome as garrison, spot barb camp in Mountains north of Antium.

Situation:
Military is 8 Warriors (4 reg., 3 vet., 1 elite), 1 worker, 3 slaves
Military Advisor: there are Jute tribes near Kiew, warrior in 1 turn
Nobody has anything worth trading, but Cathy who wants 325g+2gpt for Iron Working, I would not buy it yet and I would not start another 20 turn deal with her, peace ends in 16 and so should she. Moscow is still at size 3 - amazing.
Diplo: Brennus is Polite, Mao Cautios, Tokugawa and Lincoln annoyed and Cathy is furious
Writing in 11 at +13gpt (325 cash)
I'd settle near furs (see dotmap) next to get a lux, settler is due in 3.

Really enjoyed reading that. Looks like we'll be settling towards the north for a while. I was thinking it will hurt not having archers or spears for MP duty because using warriors will attract attacks and thet aren't worth a damn for defense. This in turn will cause a cash crunch down the line. We really need to get to IW and quick. I was wondering why we are researching writing instead of IW. Though writing should hold good trade value we need to identify iron or some archers and spears are going to eat us alive.

And the lady signs her own death warrant, nice!

Good job. I got it. I am up in half of my SGs so I will not have the turns until atleast tomorrow.

I was able to get the turns done tonight.
Preturn- Looks good.
IT-Kiev warrior->warrior.

IT-Warrior kills barb and promotes to elite. Veii granary->settler.

IT-Add a fancy door to our palace.
4-Lux back to 10 so Veii does not riot. exploring.
IT-Antium worker->warrior.
5- explore, move settler into position
IT-Kiev warrior->warrior.
6-Settle Cumae by the furs.
IT-Rome warrior->warrior.
7- Hire tax collecter in Veii so it will not riot.

8-Lux back to zero. exploration.
IT-nada
9-Move workers to iron.
IT-Rome warrior->warrior. Antium warrior->worker.
10-Lux to 10. Move settler into position.

Veii should be our settler factory. Rome can build a warrior every 2 turns. Settle the next city where the warrior and settler is.

Well, looks like I get the honor of christening our first legionaires using that pile o' cash for upgrading. We'll see how long the road takes and if I get into a scuffle or not. I propose we keep a legion posted on our iron mountain and perhaps if workers allow, fortress him. We can't lose our iron while the legions are away at war.

Grs01 -1750BC – Well, we’re not as strong as I thought. We need some growth badly to get those BG into play. I’m thinking of a settler and some more warriors. Our workers are on the mountain ready to hook us up and it won’t be long until we are looking at 30s legions. Though I love a good tussle I don’t think it will be on my watch. We’ll see. I want to take out Russian completely when the time comes. Nobody really has any cash so writing will remain in the pocket. We are strong to everyone so I’m not to worried about an extortion attempt.

IT – Cumae – Warrior > Rax (needed). Writing comes in and I go at Lit. I don’t remember any talk on what to go for. The GL would be nice so we can spend money conquering and rushing buildings.

[1] 1725BC – Plant Neapolis and start a rax in 20 which will go down when we get another pop in 7. Pop a barb camp for 25g. I growing to love those things. Gonna spread the exploring warriors out a bit and get the vet headed home to be a legion someday. There are 3 uncovering jungle fog and I want to see the enemy towns.
IT – Rome – War > War
[2] 1700BC – Shuffling around. The Russian archer and spear down having a look looks to be heading home.
IT – Kiev – War>Rax There are 3 regs there now. It will have to do.
[3] 1675BC – Healing the explorers and monitoring the Russians.
IT – Workers finish the iron road. Rome – Warrior > Warrior. Veii – Settler > Settler.
[4] 1650BC – I realized as I selected warrior for Rome that it would probably autoswitch me. I fiddle with it and see we can choose warriors even with legions available. I swap it to legions per variant. Settler is heading towards the river on the east of Minsk. I also see I can’t upgrade current warrior in Rome to Legion. It has a rax so I should be able to. Civlopedia says upgrade is MDI. I’m saving here but will continue. We can discuss tomorrow and if it needs fixed I can replay from here.
IT – Antium – Worker > rax
[5] 1625 BC – Roading towards the furs and putting a mine in Antium.
[6] 1600 BC – Russians are crossing our border heading home.
[7] 1575BC – Not much. Russians crossing.
[8] 1550BC – Exploring and furs are coming online to cut costs.
IT – Rome – Legion > Legion in 5
[9] 1525BC – Legion heads E. Founding next turn. Just realized all this cash is not doing jack. Up the science to 100%. Lit in 12 at –2gpt.
IT – Rome expands. Veii – Settler > Settler
[10] 1500BC – Pompeii is founded. As a 6 tile city with 2 BG’s until we take down Minsk.

There are still no techs from the others. I wasn’t sure if the upgrade was supposed to work or not. I was looking forward to upgrading everyone to Legions and knocking out Minsk.

Good work, conehead and barbslinger! I love our iron at Rome, and it increases our shields there! I cant understand why cant we upgrade the warriors to legions but we will survive it! :) Now I'm planning the second Russian war, which will crush Cathy easily. Dunno, how many legions I need, probably four and the warriors?
I will play it today! (and got it! :))

Suggestion:

When you go for Russia hit Smolensk and up the coast first. Be nice if Minsk grew to 2 before we conquer it, or if it became the capitol (do capitols autoraze?).

Nice to see the expansionist Russians backed into a corner like that.
