GS update: What does desert weighting mean?

For Mali, the patch notes read: Mali: Increase Mali desert weighting.

What does this mean?

My guess is probably that the start bias for Mali is weighted more towards deserts. (Mali starts in desert more often when starting a game)

Before the patch, Mali had a tier 2 start bias for desert and desert hills. After the patch, that bias is tier 1.

A lot of people experienced Mali not starting in the desert.

In this thread from GS's release time: https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...rt-biases-from-xml-file.642006/#post-15377178

I posted that Mali's start bias was:
Mali:
Desert 2
Desert Hills 2
(Coal, Iron, Copper, Diamonds, Jade, Mercury, Salt, Silver, Aluminum, Coal, Iron, Niter): 5

I just checked the same xml file, the resources are the same but Desert and Desert Hills are now 1, which is about what I expected them to do.

Yeah, Mali is dead when not starting next to desert.
Hopefully they will also be patched to start near stones.

"Increase" desert weighting? Of the last 10 Mali games I tried to start, MABYE two of them had desert within two hexes of my Settler unit, and the only patch of desert in sight was pretty small. The last Mali game I tried to start, I had RAINFOREST on four of my Settler's adjacent tiles. As of right now, the Mali start bias feels seriously broken to me.

yeah, I think I restarted more often as Mali than other civ.

Start bias has a "Tier" property, the smaller the value, the higher the priority.
So they modified the Mali start bias from Tier 2 to Tier 1.

Yeah, I think that the start biases aren't working very well with the new mapping scripts. I hope that they give it another look in the next update.
