Guess the Map II: witty sequel titles failed me

Might it be tropical diseases in general?

Polio is a possibility. I honestly don't know though, I wouldn't have thought South-east Asia would have been so overrepresented compared to say, Sub-Saharan Africa? I'm just working on the assumption that polio isn't correlated, to my knowledge, with climate and has a readily available reasonably cheap vaccine (which should surely, within reason, be more accessible in relatively wealthy Indonesia?). My brain is telling me that Suharto did a big anti-polio drive in the mid-80s through, but I'm not a 100% sure. That's probably one of the better guesses so far because I honestly can't tell you anything about polio incidence in South-east Asia.

Some possible candidates with explanations usually against: giardia (prevalent throughout Southeast Asia, but I know nothing of external distribution), dysentery (same thing as polio, I would expect Africa to be darker than it is), cholera (same thing as polio, albeit with Haiti as well), dengue (although that has a far more limited range than the map suggests; furthermore, Australia has dengue, New Zealand doesn't), leprosy (again it's been wiped out in Australia and New Zealand). :dunno:

What's a tropical disease? You can catch malaria in some decidedly untropical places...

Try this.

Black Death, Lighter being more cases and darker being less cases?

Blindness?

Undernutrition?

David Hasselhoff fans?

Lactose intolerance?

We've had lactose intolerance 3 times already that I'm aware of...

Damn, really? It looks very similar to those (as Masada pointed out) lactose intolerance maps we've had before.

Huh, the only thing I know about this map is that the key lies in Indonesia, a country I know so little about...

H5N1 avian influenza

I actually thought rabies was a good idea, but again, while Indonesia should be dark, it shouldn't be the darkest by a significant margin. Besides, South-east Asia isn't exactly known for rabies compared to Africa say. I don't have to get a rabies shot for Indonesia either AFAIK, nor Laos, nor Cambodia for that matter.

China should be darkest red. Also, it isn't a disease per say.

Cigarette smoking?

That's actually a really good guess. Smoking in Indonesia is ubiquitous and the favoured type of cigarette 'kretek' (made with cloves) are rather strong. (So much so, that I can no longer buy them here or import them, which is a shame). But I would have thought that equally hard smoking China would be darker. Australia shouldn't be that light either, it isn't notable for being smoke free compared to other western countries.
