Guess the Map IX: The Richese are no match

Only because of the arbitrary cut-off point. It is less interesting if you look at more detail. The UK was the first Western country to end relations with the ROC and recognize the PRC, in 1950.
Canada only changed its recognition in 1970, almost exactly a year before the UN vote.
Australia changed a year later in 1972 in the big post-UN recognition rush.
The US was one of the last countries to do so, in 1979, after abstaining on the UN vote.

Well it's still kind of interested that the US and UK, like peas and carrots, stand alike on a lot of international issues, but didn't on this one.

Well it's still kind of interested that the US and UK, like peas and carrots, stand alike on a lot of international issues, but didn't on this one.

The reason for that is that UK and US interests were very different immediately following WWII. It wasn't until much later that they became as entwined as they are today. The British had far more invested in China as well as concerns about Hong Kong. They were primarily concerned about having stability in the region and less about the politics of the government. This led them to be the first Western government to recognize the PRC (after only the Communist states and, 5 days after, India).

The US had much closer ties with the KMT and much more invested in the ideological struggle. And with Korea and then the Vietnam War, there was a lot more pressure not to recognize the Communist Regime.

This is also the same time period as the Suez Crisis, where US and UK interests were directly opposed. As well as various colonial conflicts where the US generally back independence (unless it would be led by Communists).

It is much more recently that US and UK have become best buddies. Sure they were close allies, but their interests often clashed in the post-war world.

And also, the Aussies have dollars and rejected the pound. :shake:

Blue countries recognized Chiang Kai-Shek's government up until some point (1971 ish?) and red countries recognized Mao's/ the PRC government before then?

ding ding ding, actually the cutoff is 1972, when the PRC took over at the UN

light blue represents countries that still recognize the ROC, and Bhutan recognizes nethier

Yeah I figured it was the UN resolution, I was just too lazy to look up what the year was.

Open floor but I might post later.
