Are the things they have in common linked? Or are the more separate like "national animals"?
I see that it includes most of the tiny island nations, as well as powerhouses America, China, Japan, and the Asian tigers (no Singapore though). France seems a strange outlier. Maybe something to do with trade or economy, in the Pacific?
Every Pacific island country, most Caribbean island countries, think that has to mean something.
France has French Polynesia, Wallis and Fortuna (sp?) and New Caledonia in the Pacific.

Its very hard to tell which Pacific islands are which on this map, but I think I nabbed the ones included in the data.
That being said, WIM is on the right track.

Countries threatened by tsunamis this year or something along those lines.
Check the OP! I labelled all the little islands. 'course it's easy to figure out when it's every island you could possibly fill in.
I think I read in National Geographic that Bangladesh has seen entire villages get washed away in floods due to storm quite often. The Tsunami or Tidal wave thing sounds reasonable to me, outside of China/Korea perhaps. I don't believe they get many big waves.
EDIT: same things goes for the Caribbean, in regards to big waves.

Well, there's a couple I don't recognize, so not all the little Pacific islands should be included on the map, but it's only a couple so I'm not going to edit it.

Seems to be related to the Pacific, maybe the effect carries across the narrow isthmus of Central America into the Carribean; France and French Guiana connected to Oceania area on map programming.
Countries with marine territory affected by some particular current or dominant winds that stretch between NE and SW in the Pacific? Or affected by Pacific-birthed hurricanes/cyclones?

I'm skeptical that it has to do with cyclones. They don't hit at the Equator, and alot of countries that lie close to the Equator are colored in.
