Btw i should note it is a map of around the change of the Millenium (2000). Not sure if it can be traced that way so i am not providing the actual date. However i doubt things have really changed since then (at least for the most part).

Malaria is even farther off, tropical is more or less spot on (I wouldn't use tropical in describing what it is, but tropical climate definitely influences the colours of the countries).

Siberian summers tend to have a lot of mosquitoes around, presumably with pools of stagnant water from melted ice there.

The prominence of Brazil and New Guinea make me think languages, but I don't know what that has to do with the tropics specifically.
