Guess the Map VI: Retroactive Cartographer

Well it is curious that the former British colony USA and the UK excel and former British colonies Australia, Canada as well as India are close behind. While with the notable exception of Germany, the rest of Europe sucks at it.
The first things that popped to my head was some kind of sport typical for the commonwealth, but Germany broke that. Other sport related possibilities don't seem to fit either, so I rule sports out.
Now Optical said that the map counts something, which implies that it is concerned with a special event that can be easily counted, but which apparently is not related to sports, but somehow related to the British Empire.

Well, got no clue for now :p

No to all so far. It's not related to the British Empire in any way that I can think of.

What links Belarus, most of Africa and Central Asia?

That they haven't got any. ;)

Something to do with university graduates?

No to all so far.

Something about gay people  I think I need a hint...

That's too horrible as China, India and United States are relatively darker in colour...

How about exports of electronic products? Sales of Microsoft Cooperation products? Ratio of Apple fans? Number of computer-addicted kids? :D

I agree that we need a small hint in order to solve this map and get to the another one.

It's to do with cities.

Close enough. It's the number of Alpha, Beta and Gamma World Cities each country has, from this Wikipedia article.

I only went up to 10+ because America had like 20 and the second placed nation - England - had 8.

I tried to find a version of this map that had countries colored, but couldn't find one. This map displays two different things that are correlated, but not necessarily things you might think of going together.

Let me take a look...

Green regions...
Industrialized regions? Highly populated regions? Suburban regions? Arable lands?

Red regions...
Definitely cities, but I am not sure that what sort of cities they are...
Commericial centres? Industrial centres? Heavy industry production centres? Sites for having over 1 million McDonald's customers?

Do you have a bigger version? It is very hard (for me) to see.

The light red dots at least aren't cities, there's some in the Southern Ocean south and a little west of the Cape of Good Hope.

EDIT: The light red dots are either volcanoes or geothermal activity.
