I read 5 year old Nat Geos too
Did you read the one about Africa. I believe it was March 2005?
The map in it showed Liberia as a colony of Portugal, however this is from memory from a week ago, so it could have been England or Holland or someone else. But Ethiopia (and South Africa) were the only independents and thats because it was a map of Africa in 1914, after South Africa gained their Independence

Either it was a mistake, or you mistook Guinea-Bissau for Liberia. Liberia was never a colony of Portugal, and it was officially independent by 1914.

Full enfranchisement? Or did I guess that already. Except, well, America should probably be not until the 60s.

Switzerland is an interesting anomaly.

Ok I am looking at the September 2005 national geographic (not March) and I am looking at the map and it clearly shows Liberia as independent.

Also Tailles could we perhaps have another hint ;)

But if I give more hints I risk giving away the answer...

Alright. It's something that's not common before the 19th century, but now every country has it, and also some that aren't fully independent countries.

Do you mean 20th Century?

Something to do with electricity or industrialism?

Do you mean 20th Century?

The 19th century is when it started to take off in the Western world. Most Asian and African countries don't get it until the 20th century, usually upon independence.

Also, this thing, let us call it x, may have been modified several times. The date listed is the earliest date of implementation of the current version of x.

Court system?
