I read through the past couple of pages twice to make sure I haven't missed any answers. As far as I can see, no one's got it yet.

Frankly, what happened 1930-1940 America, much earlier Britain, not yet Russia (as of 2000), and at the same time most of Africa (1960's)?

Pretty much.

Are Denmark and Greenland intentionally different?

Yes.

What I was saying was that it was something that a lot of countries got at independence, whilst others didn't. South Africa could be a big clue actually, because something reasonably important happened there in the '90s.

South Africa is a big clue, precisely for those reasons.

That may be an important hint, as despite being part of the Russian Empire it had different laws, a different religion, etc. But I can't figure out the map.

Yes, that's important too.

@ilduce: IIRC, it was started as a (US) colony for ex-slaves by Madison. If it had to do with independence, wouldn't Ethiopia also be earlier. Wasn't Liberia and Ethiopia the only two African countries not to fall to European powers?

EDIT: X-post

BS, the only country with that status is Ethiopia (at least according to a national geographic I read a week ago)

The history of Liberia is unique among African nations because of its relationship with the United States. It is one of only two countries in Africa, along with Ethiopia, without roots in the European Scramble for Africa. It was founded and colonized by freed American slaves with the help of a private organization called the American Colonization Society in 1821-1822, on the premise that former American slaves would have greater freedom and equality there.[4]

Well, in a way, Liberia could be considered a colony, that is, an African-American colonial regime imposed on the native African population. Officially though, it gained independence in 1847.

Haha, prove it. JK, what do you got?

edit: x-post with Tails and droopy

In the early 1800s, the American Colonization Society founded Liberia to send blacks back to Africa. They believed that desegregation would be futile because they thought blacks and whites had too many cultural differences to get along well.

It actually did survive the scramble for Africa relatively unscathed. Although the French and British bothered them about land, no serious conflict ever emerged.

Edit: Extreme x-post

South Africa in the 90s cancelled apartheid and elected Nelson Mandela, Ireland gained independence in the 20s and the USA had Prohibition in the 30s. I'm not seeing any other obvious things.

Self government? The only thing I can find about Greenland between 1910 and 1920 was the establishment of 2 Parliaments there.

Last MAJOR economic depression. Though, I guess that would't explain Germany and alot of Europe. Could we get another hing, Tailless? Please. :please:

Finland during Russian rule; Reestablishment of the Finnish Diet, and the elevation of Finnish to a national language compared to a language for commoners.

Also, does the current one count as a major one?
