First time the country ever imported oil?
 
No. Canada has imported it for quite a while (cheaper than shipping it accross the country).
 
There was one, it's just that it took place in 1976.

Finland wasn't a country until after the Russian Revolution. How is it coloured in with pre-1900?

That may be an important hint, as despite being part of the Russian Empire it had different laws, a different religion, etc. But I can't figure out the map.
 
I was wondering the same thing about the Philippines, and Iceland wasn't a separate country before 1900 either, neither was Norway,

I'd noticed Philippines and Cuba, but they were ceded in 1898, no?

I thought maybe because they have the same colour as Spain, it might've carried over from colonial powers, but African countries aren't taking the colour of their former European powers.
 
I think we'll need a hint. I like maps like this!
 
What about Liberia? It is colored pre-1900. This falls closer with South America and West Europe than with the rest of Africa.
