Guess the New Civs

Ah, but see, Civ 1-4 + Rev had Montezuma II as the leader. Civ V has Montezuma I. Attila obviously is filling the void left by the missing Montezuma II :lol:

You got your Monty's mixed, Monty I was the power hungry warmonger who carved an empire...Monty II and the Spaniards...well you know how that went.

Third? We don't even have one out and you're already thinking about third? besides, I think it's gonna be only two expnasion packs, I don't think any Civ game has more than 2 expansion packs anyway

If they see $$$, they would make a 50 bazillionth expansion to reproduce the famous conflict between the Indianapolis civilisation and the Martians.

Has DLC taught us nothing?

But more to the point, the issue facing the liklihood of future expansions is whether they are needed. This expansion is only an expansion because of the gameplay updates it's bringing too. If there are only small gameplay updates in future, they will likely be patches, and DLC will provide civs until the sales on them start to dwindle.

However, if they find the community asking for more features they will bring out more expansions. I see the distinct possibility for an expansion that brings corporations, expanded trade and greater numbers of civs each match, and that could have a distinctly modern flavour to it with distinctly modern civs, like Brazil that has been heavily requested now.

OK, according to the German article, there will be 9 new Civs.

We know 5:
Netherlands
Mayans
Celts
Byzantines (according to a screenshot)
Carthage (according to the same article)

Any thoughts for the other four?

A few thoughts based on past games:

Here are Civs that have appeared in several series but have yet to appear:
* Portugal
* Zulu
* Sumerians

Here are a few that appeared once and might appear again:
* Ethiopia
* Hittites
* Sioux

There are a few I do not believe will be in this game:
* Mali (too close to Songhai)
* Khmer (too close to Siam)
* Native Americans (preempted by Iroquois)
* Holy Roman Empire (preempted by Germany having the Landsknecht, which indicates they represent the Empire)
* Austria

A few ideas that have never been in a Civ game before. Some are City-States or I suspect will be a City-State.
* Moors
* Indonesia
* Poland (City-State as Warsaw)
* Venice (City-State as, well, Venice)
* Pueblos
* Israel (likely to be a religious City-State as Jerusalem)
* Sweden (I forget if Stockholm was given to Denmark)
* Assyrians (the Babylonians have stolen many of their cities and it would make for a crowded map, but it's worth mentioning them).

There is a screenshot that shows Lisbon is a City-State, which makes me believe that Portugal is not in. I'll reserve my thoughts for my list until after others have given their thoughts.

As an expansion based on Mercantile, Religion and Espionage here's my bets;

- Portugal. Other then the Dutch, probally the most widespread trade-based empire the world has ever seen.
- Austria. Had a fairly powerful trade network in its day and was also strongly tied to the church. I wouldnt entirely rule them out.
-Ethiopia. Very strong religious belief might get them in. Ultimately I dont find them a remarkable qualified society.
-Saracen, Syrian or some other middle eastern distinction if they do not convert Arabia to a more religious nature.
- Dubai, Yemen or another middle eastern distinction to represent mercantile nature, if they don't convert Ottomans to represent Turkeys extensive trading past.
- Italian. Has both religious and mercantile history and has never appeared in a Civ game.
- Spain will probally be converted to a religious nation.Not only is the nation defined by religion in their past, the character display holds a cross. If its not convert to take advantage of the new religion system I will be amazed.

Well, if there's really such fanciful suggestions, may I suggest post WWII Yugoslavia? :P

It was a big Russo-American politics crossover with Marshal Tito as the head of the state until 1980 when he died. After that, presidents were chosen "democratically". Yugoslavia was one of the leaders of the neutral countries in the Cold War. It had an easier form of communism than the Soviets did, which only weakened over the time. There was actually Levi jeans and Cola in the 80's.
Yugoslavia was the 3rd military strength in Europe at the time, and judging by new documentaries, Tito sold the Yugoslavian space program to the Americans the same year that a man walked the moon.
In 1990, capitalism became the type of social order for Yugoslavia. That enabled Slovenia and Croatia to break up from Yugoslavia. Due to a mix of ethnicities following the making of the Yugoslavian nation, that led to a bloody war between Croatia and Yugoslavia (Serbia). Later on, in 1992, Bosnia also declared independence, which made the war even more global, and requested the help of the United Nations.

So, basically, I'm suggesting commie Yugoslavia. It should definitely be a militarily inspired civ. It could have special spy bonuses, following the stories of the notorius UDBA, that coldly executed outlawed Yugoslavs in the western and Soviet countries. It should have a special Infantry replacement, called "Partisans", that would have a bonus fighting in rough terrain, because they were truly revolutionary guerilla rebels, that made a new state on the western Balcans. They could also have a special building for happiness, some kind of a police station, to show the Yugo maintenance of order during Tito's rule.
Symbol: Red star
Colors: Red-Blue (Is there already such a civ? Korea's Blue-Red).

Well, I guess I just have a fanciful imagination. Was fun writing all of this anyway.

Oh ffs, Portugal isn't in. They have the city-state of Lisbon in instead.

If we didn't know that Zanzibar is a CS, I would have suggested the Swahili / Kilwa Sultanate. Otherwise, perhaps Zimbabwe as an Economic civ? They literally controlled all Gold and Ivory trade in Southern Africa for hundreds of years

Random, but do you guys think Byzantium will be a Mediterranean civ? I just want to make sure.

Do they have Mediterranean art separate from European art in the game?

Do they have Mediterranean art separate from European art in the game?
Do they? If they do, I would definitely put them in as a Mediterranean civ.

They don't

European
African
Asian
American

There's no Meditarenean like in Civ 3 (and 4?) Alex and Augustus are classed as European.

I would too, but the question is if they do and I didn't seem to recall that.

There is a Mediterranean city style in Civ5.

Civ5, before the Polynesia DLC, had 5 city styles, but only 4 music sets and 4 settler styles, which may be why you can't remember whether it has the Mediterranean style.

IV (at least by the time of BTS) had a Greco-Roman art-style seperate from European that was used for Rome, Greece, Carthage, and Byzantium.

I just checked V's files:

1. ArtStyleType: Asian; ArtStylePrefix: Asian
2. ArtStyleType: South American; ArtStylePrefix: American
3. ArtStyleType: European; ArtStylePrefix: European
4. ArtStyleType: Greco-Roman; ArtStylePrefix: Mediterranean
5. ArtStyleType: Middle East; ArtStylePrefix: African
6. ArtStyleType: Polynesian; ArtStylePrefix: None
7. ArtStyleType: Barbarian; ArtStylePrefix: None

Oh, don't ever bring unmodded Civ4 up when talking about city art styles :p. Civ4 in the end only had 3 city styles: default European, Greco-Roman, Asian. And the 2 non-European styles were only added in Warlords, because the scenarios need them!

Civ2: European, Greco-Roman, Asian, "Bronze Age Monolithic".
Civ3: European, Greco-Roman, Asian, American, Middle East.
Civ5: same as Civ3, plus Polynesia.

So there is a City art. quite frankly those arts are so tiny that I never even notice. quite frankly they need to do something to improve the transition between eras, I can NEVER see any diffrence, those cities are tiny!

Anyways, I'm surprised they didn't give Meditarenean any music, maybe in G&K?

If Yugoslavia is considered more of a candidate than Austria-Hungary i have officially lost my faith in humanity :(

Austria-Hungary is a terrible idea. Austria and or Hungary would be good. But
Hungary is less likely choice due to The Huns being in.

Indeed
And I agree with you, I also really want to see a civ from the region in this XP
Hungary, Poland or Austria are the best candidates by far

But Hungary is less likely choice due to The Huns being in

Unfortunately I have to agree with this too, for this expansion Hungary's chances got significantly lower now that the Huns are confirmed
