Gunther's Land Down Under MOD
Currently Version 3

Leader: Sir Edmond Barton, Australia's First Prime Minister

Trait: Mining Nation - Australia has always relied on it's mining industry to bolster the economy! Australia recieves double Coal, Oil, and Aluminium resources.

UU: Digger - The Australian Digger is slightly weaker than the Infantry it replaces, but is cheaper, and gains the Drill 1 promotion for free.

UB: Cricket Ground - This building gives an extra happiness, and costs one less gold than the Stadium it replaces.

The sum total of these bonuses makes australia a strong Industrial age (and beyond) nation.

Yeh, it really is different in every way. The more Australia civs the better imo!

Love the cricket ground and digger unique building/unit Btw, good ideas!

I think you might have made a typo setting the maintenance cost of the cricket ground in the mod, it's showing up as 5 on the civilopedia entry in your thumbnail.

Thanks, dude, I'll definately have another look. I know that's not the only typo, too.

Edit: It says Cost 450, Maintenence 5, which is correct. But I still caught alot of little typos and grammatical errors.

Version 3 now up.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but could you please add the file to the download database on the site, it'd be very much appreciated by those of us using wine who cannot use the in game browser.

I like the ideas behind the mod so far, can't wait to give it a while as an Aussie.

No worries! First post updated with the mod package. Hope you enjoy it!

Couple of typos in the cricket ground description: "Internation" should be "International" and "amature" should be "amateur" (both in second paragraph of Historical info).

One typo in Diggers description : "becamse" should be "became" (Historical info, last line in first paragraph).

Oh and you chopped off Tassie in the intro screen background! Mainlanders... :)

Thanks for picking those up. I'll fix 'em forthwith.

I didn't even realise I did cut Tassie it off, I was just cropping it down to 1024 x 768

EDIT: Version 4 up

Here's my 2 cents, i'm a very patriotic Australian and after looking at your's and JaNorton's Australia maps have decided that although they play well, they still slightly miss the mark.

I feel a more suitable leader would be Monash.

if your unaware he was the greatest general we ever had, the general in charge of the world war 1 campaign, after galipoli, he gave us wins in world war 1 that put the fear into our enemies, in 3 pivitol battle he tactically used his infantry and allied tanks to win the war, he stopped the final German push, captured a town strong hold and finally broke the German's backs by capturing their last remaining supply line.

He basically made the rest of the world see us as a player.

next is your trait, while mining is good..... i think it leaves out our other 2-3 major exports, being sheep, cattle and fishing.

so new trait:

Riches and Hardship:
Australians get +1 to mining (production/gold to match), +1 to food from cattle bananas and fish and +1 gold from sheep and sugar (for wool exporting) however they get -1 food from all farms not in contact with a river,
this is to represent the severe hostility of the land the aussie farmers endure, things like floods and droughts are a constant occurance in Australia.

Next thing....the digger.

Love the concept but not liking the result.

The digger is what makes Australia fearsome, in war games with the US 3 years ago they had all units ranked in performance:

the results were:
1st SAS
2nd Navy Seals
3rd Australian Commandos
4th Green berets
5th Australian infantry (Diggers)
6th Rangers
7th Australian infantry reserves (chocko Diggers)
8th Marines
9th Us Army

The Australians Infantry are considered one of the toughest armies in the world, they are considered the best shock troops, and extremely good defenders.

Australia doesn't have many of them.
So making them cheaper means more of them, which doesn't make sense, you needed to go the other way, make them cost more but have more starting skills.

so i'd say you have two options:

Suggestion 1:
increase the cost of the standard infantry by 25%
give them the same stats, but they start with the following skills:
Drill 1, Shock 1, Shock 2 and Survival 1.

Suggestion 2 (use suggestion 1 and add) a second Australian option (basically the diggers you made, call them chockos and change the drill 1 to survival 1. keep cost and strength as you had)
chocko's survived for months against crack japan comandos in kokoda)

Building: no change, except call it an afl stadium? simply because it's more recognizable as Australian, as english play cricket as well.

I hope you like my suggestions, if you don't then i guess i'll have to learn how to make mods so i can make it for my self.

Your suggestions are sound, except:

1) I dissagree with having Monash as the leader because Australia wasn't made by generals.

2) I prefer mining nation to your riches and hardship for simplicities sake.

3) My "Diggers" were specifically meant to be the hardy, rough terrain, type soldiers of the Track, The Desert, The Jungle, but not the modern super-trained Australian soldier. Perhaps a name change to "Chocko" is in order, but how many people (even australians) recognise the term? Not many, I'd wager.

4) Cricket -> Aussie Rules is an obvious choice *smacks head*. ;) In my defense, they ARE the same stadiums...

our troops have never been good off-terrain attackers, which goes against your idea for them.
they have always been shock troops, and defensive types.
you put them in open terrain like in Africa where the rats of tobrook held of the germans in desert terrain or trench flat ground terrain like France and they win, you put them fight up hills like in Galipoli, they loose, you put them in jungle terrain like kokoda, they may not be able to win, but they can't be defeated while defending.
They need to cost more, because Aussies don't have big armies.
Don't lower their strength, they are not weaker troops.
They need to have the shock skill because that's what they are, shock troops, doesn't matter if it's ww1 ww2 or current day.
they need to have a defensive bonus, i felt survivalism made sense as they get that defensive bonus at rank 2 and rank 1 gives them defense healing away from home, which if i was a game designer would be how i would represent the mateship they had.

So if you want it simple, make diggers cost 320 have the same strength and start with shock 1 and survival 1
it would be the easiest way to make an accurate unit.

Well as for leaders my counter argument would be that is only case today because democracy means generals no longer lead countries, where as if monash had of been in ancient times he would of been like a nepolian. but if that's what you like that's fine, also on a side note, did you know the priminister at the time hated monash because he felt he had more power, more favor from the people and more control then he did, he was petrified monash would become the next pm.

still think Australia should have at the very least a cattle bonus and Australia has the biggest uranium and 3rd biggest gold deposits, why didn't you factor it all in, why not change it to +1 from all mines and pastures, that makes it very easy and simple.
