I got to thinking that I didn't play enough diety level, so I decided to try out an archipeligo game on diety as egypt.

Here is what I got. It is about 7 turns into the game and you can see...

I've heard of a lot worse starts, but I have to say it took the wind out of my sails...

Exactly what I tried. Unfortunately, the Red is Rome and I lost my first three archer attacks, all to archers (in fact in 3 attacks on archers on flat terrain, I only did 3 damage total)

After that Rome allied Carthage against me and it was all downhill.

I'm curious if there is another strat I could have used or if it really boiled down to the luck of an archer rush.

Maybe waited for more archers? I dunno. You could have fit maybe two more cities in there, and gotten that many more archers. Depends what your southeast looks like.

It sounds like you gave it a shot and lost to the gods of the RNG. A few more archers here or there? Probably the same result (especially if you were on a pretty high level.) You had a bad start, but unlike that 1-tile desert island start, it took you a few turns to realize it.

You could have tried to make the game a OCC although I have never tried those without being on a river.

Glad to see you make a go at the game instead of just quiting.

try to scare them into a cease fire then build up archers (maybe even swordsman if that hill in the SE has IRON and attack them, while preparing for Carthage

As a note, I had about 10 archers and got overwhelmed. Maybe I waited too long, Maybe squeezing in the extra cities for more unit support would have been better. I considered it, but thought I had enough archers.

I look forward to seeing how you people win this. (There is no doubt in my mind that someone will)

Maybe you should put this in the "worst starts" thread Jeff. Since this is your first crack at Deity, as far as your playing options I probably would have turned off Barbs all together. Probably would have turned off SGL's also, when you try a level that high for the first time I don't like having the AI's pop all that knowledge from goodie huts (believe me you will be behind in techs as it is) and give them the the advantage of rushing wonders with SGL's. Good luck with it!!

Wasn't aware of the thread, would have posted there if I was.

Since this is your first crack at Deity, as far as your playing options I probably would have turned off Barbs all together.

Hardly my first shot at Diety, I have beaten it a few times before in both GOTM and individual games. I just haven't been playing diety because it is often too much work.

Let's hear it for lazy.

One other thing, It just occured to me that this is a PTW save, I still haven't broken down and purchaced C3C.

You shouldnt type in al caps its annoying and pointless.

Anyways I would have waited for ships find a big contient and then take it wuth TONS of settlers, there you go no need for war at least at first

later on I would knock out Rome Cathage and the world in one move

That is a nice start! (2 cattle!) Build a city 1 SE of that warrior in the north, build a few workers, and work those tiles like no tomorrow. A simple archer rush would do.

Granted, it depends on the level too...

Ever had a 2-city start on an island against a Sid-level AI with only archers, spears and trebuchets to defend yourself? I have... Pushed that AI back... Before the Hittites saved me for last with their Modern Armor!

Oh, didn't notice it's ptw - that for sure makes things a lot harder (no Curraghs, no Trebs, no defensive Bombard from Archers).

If I can get hold of the seed, I will add it in the next consolidation post in the 'Ugly Starts'-Thread.
