Hamas 'implicitly accepts Israel'

As we sat here in our boxer shorts arguing about Hamas, a car exploded near the residence of the Palestinian president.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A massive explosion on Tuesday demolished a car traveling near the residence of President Mahmoud Abbas, killing an unknown number of people inside. The blast scattered debris and body parts up to 200 yards away.

It was not known who was traveling in the vehicle or how many people were inside.

The car was traveling on a road between Abbas' residence and the offices of Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.

Israel has been threatening tough military action in Gaza since a soldier was abducted by Palestinian militants on Sunday. The Israeli army, which routinely claims responsibility for airstrikes in Gaza, said it was not involved in Tuesday's blast.

S**t, this is not good. If Abbas is dead or incapacitated the ONLY moderating influence on the Palestinian Authority is gone. He managed to hold Hamas back only because most Palestinians actually agree with his policies, and he threatened referendums at every turn, as is his right as President. (or Prime Minister) If Hamas fills the post with one of its own men, you can bet they will: 1. stop calling for referendums, 2. say this declaration is null and void and then, 3. announce the fate of the Israeli soldier just to anger Israel. Back to Square One. F******CK!!!!!

GAZA (Reuters) - The governing Hamas movement reached a political agreement on Tuesday with moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas but said it would continue to refuse to recognize Israel.

[…] Hamas insisted it was sticking to its “agenda of resistance” against Israel.

“The document included a clear clause referring to the non-recognition of the legitimacy of the Occupation,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said, using the Islamist group’s term for Israel.
Officials close to the negotiations said Abbas, of Fatah, and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, of Hamas, drafted a platform accepting a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, areas captured by Israel in a 1967 war.

Such a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be in line with Fatah’s recognition of Israel.

But Hamas legislator Salah al-Bardaweel told Reuters: “We said we accept a state (in territory occupied) in 1967 — but we did not say we accept two states

So.....looks like it is usual Hamas's "cat and mouse" game. Pressed by boycott they are just trying to have omelette without breaking eggs.

A spokesman for the Paliestinians was on Newsnight saying (when pushed as only Paxman can) that the document aserts they accept Israils right to exist to the pre-war bundaries. Must be better than a kick in the teeth?
