Handy 19 Grumpy Old Men try AWD standard map

1. We don't want to start a pre-build in a second ring city. It needs to be either Elvis or a city 3NW of the capitol. I would prefer Elvis. Build the granary, then start a pre-build.

I agree with Bugs, it can't have too much corruptio, I vote for Elvis, either it works or we can shelf the game anyway

Thanks for the reminder M60.j

I'll see what conclusions I can draw. :hmm:

That means I got it. Will play tomorrow AM.

Alles in ordnung, swapping spears around and adjusting the luxury budget, until 1910 when a French warrior appears from the SE.

Offer her pottery and get 48g. Joan knows Masonry, The Wheel, Ceremonial Burial, and Iron Working and has no interest in any other trades for what little we have to offer.

After taking a long look at her cleavage I snatch the cap off her head and declare war. And her warrior runs away into the fog after I switch a garrison spear to Elvis.

In 1790 two French Warriors show up.

In 1750 a settler is equipped at Salamanca and heads to the NW spot.

Iron Working is due in 3 at positive cash. There are three defenders in Grand River and two attackers. Elvis is building its first settler, can be changed to a prebuild (barracks is all we have until we learn Masonry) or swapped to a spear if needed, depending on the outcome of the attack at Grand River.

The more I look at it the less I like the idea of giving up a settler farm to the Great Library. If the NW spot is really juicy for food, we could put our settler/worker production there, though. As I recall the last Iro AWD continents (small map though) what hurt was the delay in getting to the other continent. If we make a beeline to the naval knowledge (Map Making and Astronomy and get a decent navy down early I think we can mitigate that issue.

The save at 1500BC

Have to take turns now, as I'm out the next couple days.

Pre-turn: Two warriors hang out by Grand River

IBT- Regular warrior impales himself on GR. No promote. Twin brother decides discretion is the better part of valor and fortifies.

Turn 1- Settler pair 1NW

IBT- zzz

Turn 2- Settler pair over the river. A silk adjacent, a few trees.

IBT- IW in, Masonry next. Due in 12 @ -2 cash flow.

Turn 3- And we have iron on the mountain 2 away from Salamanca. Must be living right. Mister Spear will leave our friendly settler for a moment to hop onto the adjacent mountain. The coast is clear. Mannyland founded.

IBT- The clever French warrior sees Mannyland vacant, so he un-forts and heads in that direction.

Turn 4- Settler from Elvis heads southeast. Masonry now in 9.

IBT- We have two warriors once again in sight, both regulars.

Turn 5- Settler from Elvis finds an auxiliary iron source.

IBT- Now three pink bogies.

Turn 6- Now 2 vet spears to defend Mannyland.

IBT- Spain finishes the Oracle. French are building ToA.

Turn 7- Now 6 French warriors and a spear. All regulars. Cattaraugus founded.

IBT- Now 9 warriors. And the beat goes on.

Turn 8- Now a third iron spotted.

IBT- The French warriors come cheaper by the dozen I guess.

Turn 9- Move a settler east of Elvis

IBT- France decides to retire one of it’s warriors against Mannyland. We lose an hp.

Turn 10- Fort everyone so next up can decide what needs doing. I have one vet spear forted up on the mountain by Mannyland which can reinforce the town if needed.

lurker's comment:
Well I find that picture quite scary. Naked settler and naked town in AW? This game
is way to streched for military IMHO.

I think southern towns are quite safe. I don't expect any AIs in the south judging from the minimap. But that settler in the east needs protection, there might be some french units there.

I'll play my turns tonight.

pre-turn:
- We have only 2 workers - this is way to few: we need to road the iron mountain, we need to build roads to connect our towns to move troops and we might need to join some to the GL city, so i think we should build some more. I switched southern town to worker, and i'll build some more in other towns.
- I moved our settler one tile west, that is a bit too close CxC instead of CxxC, but it allows us to get 5fpt and we won't need a duct. Also it will be connected by a road immidiately and this will reduce the risk of an unprotected city.
- Elvis is currently at 4fpt and about to riot: i reajusted it to 5fpt and shifted units for MP. They can also be used to protect the new city in case of emergency.
- I've been thinking about TGL and here some ideas: I originaly wanted to build it in Mannyland, but it was the target of most french forces and we could not improve enough land around it and won't be able to do it in near future. So it's Grand River or Elvis. Elvis has incredible shield potential if we let it grow past size 6, but we loose our SF and we cannot get TGL faster then in 30 turns anyway (estimated Writing&Lit research time). If we improve tiles near Grand River we can get it to a decent 13spt at size 6: 3BGs, game forest and 2 forests. I think it is good enough if we start early, so i'll start prebuild there. The downside is that we'll need to protect 1 tile from pillaging.

IBT
- We kill 3 french warriors near Mannyland, one reg spear promotes.
- More french units approach, one of them is an archer. Spear moves deeper into our territory threatening many tiles, there is no way i can protect all of them from pillaging, so i'll have to attack him with our archer.

1475BC
- Oil Springs founded, starts granary. It will be another good worker/settler factory. Elvis currently has to many shields for a regular 4-turn factory and to few for a combo factory, so i took some good tiles from it and gave them to Oil Springs.
- Archer kills french spear.

IBT
- We kill 3 more french warriors and our spear is promoted to Elite.

1450BC
- Elvis: settler->worker. I don't see any good and safe locations for cities, so i'll let Elvis be a 2-turn WF for a while. Settler goes south to grab some BGs.
- Switching southern city to worker was a :smoke: move, cause it is at size 1, switch it back to warrior loosing 1 turn.

IBT
- As usual we kill 3 french warriors and get another Elite spear.

1425BC
- Mannyland: spear->barracks
- Cattaraughus: warrior->worker
- Salamanca: spear->spear

IBT
- Kill another warrior

1400BC
- Elvis: worker->worker
- Shifting MP allows us to lower lux to 10%

IBT
- kill one more french warrior.

1375BC
- Tonanwanda is founded.
- The flood of warriors ended, french archer is fortified near Mannyland. I attack and killed him with our elite spear.

1350BC
- Elvis: worker->worker
- Salamanca: spear->archer

1325BC
-

1300BC
- Elvis: worker->worker

1275BC
- Thing have beed very quiet ercently, i've sent our spear to explore closest french cities a bit.

1250BC
- Salamanca: archer->archer
- Elvis: worker->worker, worker moves to Grand River to join next turn.

One minute we're talking about the Great Library in Elvis, and then we're pealing off workers. We're toast without the GL gents.

I have it.

And we're toast without workers too :) And only about 1/2 of the team agreed to GL in Elvis. Grand River at size 6 can work 3 BGs, one game forest and 2 forests which is 11spt after corruption. That is only a few turns later then we research Literature if we join 2 workers to GR.

I guess that's what makes SGs interesting. I would have allowed Elvis to grow to size 8 or 9 and pealed workers off GR. Personal preference. I just hope this works.
