Handy 19 Grumpy Old Men try AWD standard map

Pre-flight – Why don’t we have all our workers working solo? And if grand River is our pre-build city, we need to have more of our tiles improved. Worker suppression at Chartres – very good tactic. Change Salamanca to a settler.

1225 – Move workers.

Two French Archers step out of Chartres.
Elvis: worker=>barracks

1200 – Nada

IBT – French build ToA in Paris. We’ll need to get there sometime soon. The Great Wall is built in Carthage. London builds MoM.

1175 – Kill two French archers with one promotion. (2-0)

IBT – Some French swords come into view. Yeah, this might get ugly boys and girls.
Writing=>Lit due in 13 at -2gpt.
Salamanca: settler=>archer
Cattaraugus: worker=>barracks

1150 – nada

IBT Tonawanda: worker=>barracks

1125 – Join a worker to Grand River

1100 – Preparing for the onslaught – There’s an archer above Oil Springs, and a sword and archer approaching Grand River.

IBT – Win two battles. (4-0)
Elvis: barracks=>sword

1075 – Found Mauch Chuck Berry. Salamanca is changed to a sword.

IBT – Kill an attacking sword, then lose our spear to another sword. (5-1)
Mannyland: barracks=>sword

1050 – Kill the wounded sword. (6-1)

IBT Salamanca: sword=>sword

1025 – nada

1000 – Kill a spear. (7-1)

We need to merge another worker into Grand River. Elvis is almost to a three turn sword. We’ll need to concentrate on military for a while.

What a Great setup for the Celts this is, but where are the Iroquois horses?
Change build in Mannyland to walls.

IBT
Elvis – sword – sword

Turn 1 975
MM Elvis to 10 spt via swap with Oil Springs.
Shuffle archers for defensive bombard.
Place a vet spear in Grand River and move the regular to the dyes.
[Lesson learned the Hard Way] We should have built walls in Grand River before we started the Prebuild. Always build walls on the front lines early in the game. Later when you are steamrolling you do not need them. Early in the game – especially before you get cats you need to have walls. I’ll try to pack Grand River with units and invite the AI to avoid it and direct it’s attention elsewhere with some bait.
Grand River grows next turn so I reassign a citizen to a forest.
At least the French attack route is on unimproved tiles so we lose no production.
There must be iron all over this continent. We have three and apparently France has some.

IBT
France wants peace. We say no.
Vet spear dies at the hands of a regular sword in Grand River and the city riots. We’ll need extra units there or it will riot each time the AI kills enough of the garrison. I’m pulling the spears off the bonus grassland. If we are rioting it won’t matter if it is protected or not.
[0-1]

Turn 2 950
Elvis is 10spt, so I’m switching it to 2 turn spears instead of 3 turn swords.
The lack of retreat units is also going to hurt us. We can’t bomb units to get them to retreat. We have to protect workers so I’ll need to attack and remain exposed to counter attack.
Elite archer kills warrior.
Sword kills archer, and is now exposed. I’ll cover him with a spear.
[2-1]

IBT
We lose a spear in Oil Springs and it riots. Should have built walls before we built a granary.
Spear covering our sword dies.
Another veteran spear in the Grand River dies.
[2-4]

Turn 3 925
Shuffle a spear to Grand River.

Grand River is getting expensive to protect. The AI is attacking with swords from forest. If we counter attack, they counter attack the exposed unit and kill us the next turn.
Grand River is size 6, but can’t work the forest unless we bump the lux tax. I’ll bump lux for 2 turns until the silks are hooked up, then scale lux back.
Kill an archer.
[3-4]

IBT
Uh oh …The French are killing spears faster than we can make them.
We lost another spear @ Grand River, but then we won twice. Given the number of swords on the way to Grand River it is only a matter of time before they take the city, or another city where we borrowed units from falls.
We currently have three unguarded cities and one city guarded by warriors.
[5-5]

Turn 4 900
Shuffle a spear to Grand River to replace the one that died on the IBT.

Turn 5 875
I can count 7 French swords moving toward Grand River.
The AI is apparently ignoring our three empty cities and moving all swords to Grand River.
Kill an archer that has wandered to our capital. We are safe from counter attack.
If a boat pops out of the fog and drops units next to one of the empty cities we will lose it since we would have to cross a river to reinforce it. The AI will take the city IBT before we can get there. I’ll move 1 spear to cover both Tonawanda and Chuck.
Three swords will attack GR on the IBT. The GR garrison is 2 vet spears and an archer.
I emptied the Dye city of Mannyland as a bait tactic.

IBT
Spears @ Grand River redline but hold on and defeat 3 swords. Lucky the French are sending regular swords. We got a promotion out of the attack.
[8-5]

Turn 6 850
Some of the French Swords moved into the fog. Perhaps they took the Mannyland Bait since the silks are now hooked up
A reg spear now resides in Cattaraugus and a lone spear guards both Tonawanda and Chuck from a surprise naval landing. Both cities were switched to walls to give the lone defender a sporting chance against two opponents.
Kill an archer @ Oil Springs.
[9-5]

IBT
:hmm: Not sure where all the French Swords went, but probably toward the Silks.

IBT
Elvis kicked out a worker so it would not have to hire a specialist. One sword approaches the silks.

Turn 7 825
Not much

Turn 8 800
Roads & Mines.
More units sent to the silk city.
Slider down since Lit comes in.

IBT
Worker suppression spear is attacked so he must retreat
[10-5]
Lit – Math
Glib in 16 turns.

Turn 9 775
No one else has begun the Glib. Since we do not know anyone else I set research on math to the max.

Turn 10
The wandering French swords are back and appear headed toward Grand River. We are luck they took a walk for a few turns to allow us to build some defense.

Notes:
I was a little worried (okay ALOT) worried we would lose Grand River, but the French took a walkabout at the right time.

There are six workers on a hill next to the capital. You can get the capital to 10spt pretty easy.

Watch out for boats from the fog. Those coastal cities are hard to reinforce since you have to cross a river.

Once we get math, start building cats pronto.

Should have built walls before we built a granary.

lurker's comment:
I thought Elvis had a granary to be a food source. I am curious why two granaries this early. I would have preferred 3 more spears.

got it, looks like a rough ride. Either we get the GL and expand fast after that or we are toast. Since the French bring on no mounted units, I am a little worried about the horses. Where are they

We haven't researched the wheel yet, so for all we know, we may be sitting on top of one right now. We hope to find out soon.

Thanks. I missed that. I still think we need cats first. We need both the wheel and HBR to build MW's. We are in a tought spot because the French only attackh from the woods. MW's would get killed on the IBT even if we had them. They are much better with some cat/spear support.

RAT If at all possible try to keep settler coming from Oil Springs. If we do not keep building cities our unit cost will kill us when we switch to Monarchy and research will die.

Chuck looks like a cat factory if you mine hills and join a couple of workers. If you get to math in time you can switch the rax to a cat.

If we get some RNG luck we'll grab the Glib and then can build walls pretty fast in Grand River.

Things got better toward the end of my turns as we produced some more units. :)

If we can hold onto the early expansion we'll be in pretty good shape. I just hope we don't lose something like 4 battles in a row in Grand River. That will kill us.

Pre-Turn
give Oil springs a tile from Cattaraugus, nth much we can do

IT luckily the French run after our wounded spear and avoid the game, this way we keep shields for GL

1. 730BC
nth much

IT this will get very ugly since there are 9 swords, 2 archers and 2 spears running about

2. 710BC
shuffling of citizens to optimize things

IT French keep on marching, this will be a major slugfest next 2 turns
light the lucky candle and here we go...

3. 690BCAD
sword beats spear going to1hp first
sword beats sword outside GR [2-0]
Salamanca is at 10spt as well now

IT uh, the attacks come fast and furious, need to reload to count the happenings
ok, here is the result
French lose 5 swords and 2 archer, we lose 3 spears and GR does not riot [9-3]

4. 670BC
spot light blue border in the north
e-archer beats spear, archer kills wounded sword and sword beats wounded sword [12-3]

IT sword suicides at GR [13-3]

5. 650BC
healing and waiting for next round

IT oh no, grey settler pairs turns up

6. 630B
now India is really backward and doesn't even know writing, they have 9 cities and have no iron
trade wheel + 3g for writing and declare
we have no horses, but the French actually have them

IT French attack beat 1 spear and lose 2 swords [15-4]
we get maths, go for CB since we can get it in 4 at 30% and we still hope to net the GL

7. 610BC
nth

IT French attack with wounded sword and lose, India sends another warrior settler pair, thanks for the help
[16-4] Frenhc also start SoZ, good if we can capture that

8. 590BC
defeat Indian warrior for 2 slaves
use an opportunity to go on the offense
beat 2 swords + 2 archers [21-4]

IT our sword defeats French sword on defense [22-4]

9. 570BC
whack the 2nd Indian warrio pair for 2 more slaves [23-4]
found St Regis

10. 550BC
our first cat dangs French sword
send spear a little to the west to explore whether there are horses anywhere
attack again and defeat 2 swords, 1 archer, but lose 1 sword [26-5]

GL is due in 4, once we have an army, we need to go on offense, the initial French rush is over, however light blue is very close by now and
contact is imminent

Let's hope the Spanish are more advanced than the Indians. Otherwise the GLib will be rather marginal. So what's the plan? Wait til Monarchy comes through the GLib, then revolt?

Let's also hope the horses aren't in Paris.

Preturn: Looks pretty good. Glad we are likely to get the GLib.

IBT: See mostly French Swords.

530 BC: Kill a Sword.

510 BC: Wait until the swords are a bit closer

490 BC: Kill 3 swords and an Archer. Spain steps near us with a Warrior and we are at war. They have techs so we will be getting some next turn.

IBT: Build the GLib.

470 BC: Kill an Archer. Explore a bit North. The ocean is fairly close - we can probably fill that area easily.

IBT: Get a bunch of Techs including Monarchy. Revolt immediately/

450 BC: The AI's are sending settlers our way. I will try to nab them.

430 BC: Destroy Indian town of Bengal to the North. it was only guarded by a Warrior. Kill the first Settler Pair

410 BC: We get a leader which becomes an Army. Lose an Elite sword and an Elite Archer vs 2 hp and 1 hp Swords. We have some Awesome land up North. I think the FP should go up there. For example, we can place a city with Grasland Wheat and Cow and 5 BG.

390 BC: Army kills a Settler Pair

370 BC: Another Settler Pair is beaten.

350 BC: Final known Settler Pair is defeated.

Notes:
We should expand North. We can grab a decent chunk of land up north with very little extension of our borders.
The pink boat off our coast already dropped off a unit.
We just made it into the Middle Ages via the GLib. We own all ancient tech but Republic.
I marked the site I mentioned above as "Future FP Site?" Its biggest drawback is that it would have 3 coastal squares and not be on the coast. Might still be worth building though. Alternatively it could be on the coast at the cost of a BG and a Hill. I prefer The non-coastal If I count right it has sufficient food to handle the 3 1 food coastal squares - Cow, Wheat and center square give +6 food which supports 3 coastal (with no harbor), the mountain and the Hill. We end up with 0 food at size 20 with all squares mined. If it was coastal it would have excess food we couldn't used. This is all for the future though...

Looks like we have no horses close to us. We will not get our UU before knights I don't think.

HNDY19_BC350.jpg

Army and the Great Library....Nice position we got ourselves in. Maybe it's time to clear some Frenchies, hein?

Got it.

Kill Frenchies and back fill. I know a certain monk who is up to the task.

we must make sure the French don't get musketeers or we are in trouble. Go after them, then backfill later. We also need horses and IIRC we can always build our UU until we hit the GA.

Remember we always need to be building at least one settler. When we stop expanding we're doomed.

There are a few French swords in the neighborhood of Grand River, though none close enough to cause immediate concern.

The sword army is down in the SE looking after a Spanish town and a settler is on his way to the NW territories.

A French archer takes a cat hit then wounds a spear at Grand River before dying, and a few more French swords make their appearance. 1-0

330BC

H19_330BC.jpg

Beef up the garrison defense at Grand River with some more cats and rush the walls now that shields are in the the bin.

The cats at Grand River are less than effective in hurting the oncoming stack of four (1 sword, 1 archer, 1 spear, 1 warrior).

A vet sword from GR kills the healthy spear 2-0

A vet sword from Salamanca kills healthy sword, light injuries. Then a vet archer kills the wounded spear, heavy casualties 3-0, leaving an archer and warrior of the four attackers, plus three swords in attack position, so I move another sword from Elvis into GR.

Army takes an arrow at Asturias and just survives an encounter with a Spanish spearman 4-0. Moves back into territory to heal at Oil Springs.

The Spanish have sent another settler team in from the north.

The spear in the NW discovers the tip of another continent.

H19_330BCExploration.jpg

The scary thing right now is the Deity flip risk levels at Grand River (French) and Oil Springs (Spanish). On the border expansion at 10cp GR's border did not push appreciably at Chartres. So that town has to go....

H19_330BCSitRep.jpg

The forces at GR go 4-0 against attacking Frenchmen. 8-0

The Spanish settler team have somehow disappeared in 310. The trekking settler is heading to the forests NE of Mannyland to try and seal off the NW corner from wandering Spaniards.

The French have gotten smart and no longer expose their attack forces in the open -

H19_310BC.jpg

The cats wound the a couple of French swords and an elite sword kills one, but there are too few really healthy troops in GR to risk injuring or losing and then have ot face the French, so the rest of the troops stay put.

The French lose two killed in the battle of GR, the Iro take no casualties. 10-0

In 290 we face only three attackers at GR and the cats hurt two of them. A vet sword takes out an archer but wins no promotion. 11-0

The Spanish settler has reappeared with his warrior escort, so I bait the warrior with a couple of Spnaish slaves and move the settler and two swords and a spear into place on the chosen settlement spot. If the settler builds on the spot the swords will take down the warrior defending and if they move forward I'll build where the settler stands and take the Spanish slaves.

The Spaniards move forward so I settle on the spot in 270 then claim the two slaves. 12-0

A Spanish archer attacks a spear on the road to Cattaraugus 13-0

The French flood of units is more than a trickle but less than a spate and the army is healthy so cats, spears, swords and the army start towards Chartres. a garrison sword at GR takes out a French sword advancing into our interior. 14-0

In 250 kill two archers covering the approach to Chartres and move the army forward. 16-0

Then kill a French sword at GR 17-0, a Spanish archer at Mannyland 18-0, then lose a sword at Salamanca in an attack on a French spear. 17-1, then redline a vet sword from the GR garrison finshing him off. 18-1

Build Greebly on the road to the FP site.

There is a French settler pair a-wandering towards the NW into the sharp blades of the two swords up there and a single French sword threatening Oil Springs, the Frenchman dies on the walls of Oil Springs 19-1

In 230Bc the French and Spanish are moving settlers around both north and south, the settler born at Oil Springs goes to claim the iron hills south of Cattaraugus and Elvis will finish another settler in 210BC. Cats and army are at the gates of Chartres.

The year 210 is kind of interesting. There are French and Spanish slave carriers all heading for the same spots. The first French mounted trooper appears and it is not a knight or a horseman but an Ancient Cavalryman. A French regular spear guarding a French settler at Centralia kills an elite sword. 19-2. But a vet sword finishes the task and we get two more slaves.

The French pulled a lot of troops out of Chartres as the army waited for the cats to arrive. I guess we'll see what they have left. In 190 four cats score three hits and hurt two defending spears (both regulars), and that's all folks, Army kills them both and burns the town which apparently removes Joan's source of ivory which is now outside her borders. 21-2

In 190 the French borders expand and she now has ivory again. Exploiting the breakout is not going to be easy.

Kill a French sword in the forest NE of GR. And another SE of the rubble of Chartres. 23-2

Trade Swords with the French at Chartres 24-3, but an elite spear kills the French AC 25-3

In 170 the army moves out into France but our spear in the NW discovers the Babylonians with a settler....Hello, Hammurabi, how are ya? He's got horses but no iron and knows Feudalism, so I pull his beard and run away.

Kill a Spanish spear and collect two more slaves. 26-3

The French land a single sword at Tonawanda.

In 150 the army steps all over Joan's ivory and moves on towards Rouen. Kill a French sword at the rubble of Chartres and a Spanish archer at Oil Springs. The French sword at Tonawanda takes a cat hit but no damage. 28-3

There is a settler at Greebley who was heading to the NW.

Various low voltage bogies are wandering into the territory. An Indian SoD (3 warriors and two spears) is on a mountain NW of GR. There are some Spanish (2 spears, a warrior and an archer) coming in from the N. Two French swords and an archer are inbound to Centralia.

H19_150BCSitRep.jpg

The area of greatest activity

H19_150BC_Closeup.jpg

The FP is available to us and most of the worker force is in the NW working in advance of the settler to that site. There is a gang of slaves working on roads toward the French front around GR.

Tally:

Better than 7-1 kill ratio
Army on the loose in French territory and Joan has no ivory
Got beat to the NW by the Babylonians from overseas
Built three towns
Upgraded all vet swords and spears to MA level
Didn't lose Grand River

With the army on the rampage in Joan's territory it might be time to clean the Spanish out of the near lands, as well as take out Poitiers built by the French on the northern peninsula. The French troops at Centralia are more than likely on the way to reinforce Poitiers as they could be deterred by the walls and garrison at Centralia.

I'm currently out of town, i didn't even have internet untill recently. Just skip me this round, i won't be able to play, but i'll be in touch from now on. Looks like you did a great job :goodjob: I'm sorry that i made everybody so nervous about the GLib, we built it quite late (i actually planned to join one more worker, but still it was risky), but it's good that we got away with it :). I agree that we should keep on settling, i think that Oil Springs should be the settler factory and new cities should build workers. I didn't see the indians on the pictures. Are they on the same continent with us or not?

The save at 50AD

Preturn- Upgrade 3 vet spears to pikes.

IBT- Reg Fr sword dies @ Tonowanda against our spear. (1-0). We learn Republic but of course remain a happy Monarchy.

Turn 1 (130BC) 2 cats hit reg Fr spear @ Salamanca and vet MI kills it. (2-0). Cat takes a bite from a Fr galley. Spain and India stacking up a few regs for action near Mannyland. Upgrade another couple vet spears.

IBT- France wants to speak to us. I don’t speak French. 2 Fr reg swords die at Centralia. (4-0). Palace expansion gets us a new façade and sidewalk to lend curb appeal. Now France building Sun’s.

Turn 2 (110BC) East of Mannyland Vet MIs get In reg spear (5-0), 2hp reg spear (6-0), 2 reg warriors (8-0). At Centralia, vet sword loses 2 hp but gets Fr reg archer (9-0).
Cats redline Fr reg spear. Sword finishes it (10-0) and goes elite.

IBT- Indian reg warrior pillages a mined tile.

Turn 3 (90BC) Pillage the road by Rouen with army. Lose 4 hp, but kill reg pike (11-0).
Vet MI kills reg In warrior (12-0). Cats redline reg Fr MI and our vet MI finishes (13-0).
2 cats redline reg Sp spear. Elite archer kills spear and we have Cornplanter. :king: (14-0). Heads off to local eatery and creates MI army.

IBT- Reg Fr sword dies vs elite spear (15-0). Fr AC comes out of the fog and gets an elite spear and captures cat (15-1). Spain pillages silk tile.

Turn 4 (70BC) At Salamanca, Vet MI kills reg In warrior (16-1). Kill redlined reg Sp spear (17-1). Vet MI kills reg Sp spear, goes elite (18-1). Army kills reg Sp spear (19-1). Vet MI kills reg Sp warrior (20-1). Vet sword gets reg Sp archer (21-1). MI gets redlined Sp warrior (22-1). Vet MI gets Sp 2 hp spear (23-1). Capture my cat back.

Army pillages a tile near Rouen and moves south spotting Avignon. And……………… 4 LEGGED CRITTER ALERT!! :band:

IBT- Reg Fr MI dies against our elite sword. (24-1).

Turn 5 (50BC) Vet MI and sword kill 2 Fr reg archers by Centralia (26-1). MI Army disposes of 2 Sp reg swords. Top dog promotes to elite (28-1). Sword army kills reg Fr MI (29-1). 4hp elite sword gets the Fr AC who can claim their sole win this round (30-1).

IBT- Reg Fr MI redlines our vet pike, but dies (31-1). The French found Toulouse by the ivory pile.

Turn 6 (30BC) Cats go 0-4 at Centralia against Spanish SoD. MI army nets 2 reg spears (33-1). Vet MI dies against reg spear (33-2). RNG is not working well. 4hp elite MI dies against reg Sp sword (33-3). Reg sword kills reg warrior. (34-3). And again (35-3). And a reg archer (36-3). Now the French get real dumb, sending a reg pike out of Avignon and replaced it with a reg spear. Sword army defeats said spear (37-3) and we have Avignon. It has a horse in it's border, but not connected to the rest of our cities. 2 vet MI double-team Sp pillaging pair of reg spear mit archer. (39-3).

IBT- No battles. The AI seems gassed temporarily.

Turn 7 (10BC) Cats and vet MI attack Toulouse defended by reg Fr spear. Kaboom. (40-3). Theoville founded. 4 hp elite sword kills reg Fr pike at Avignon (41-3).

Now the tough decision. I really don’t want Avignon to flip with the army inside, so move everyone out and abandon the town. So there goes our horse for the moment. :(

IBT- Vet MI takes out a reg Fr MI and Sp archer before a second Sp archer getd him. (43-4).

Turn 8 (10AD) MI army and vet sword kill 2 reg Fr spears at Poitiers (45-4). Elite MI kills reg Bab bow@ Greebley (46-4). Vet sword loses to reg Fr MI. (46-5) Vet Mi defeats reg Fr spear (47-5). Vet MI @ Mannyland takes out reg Fr archer (48-5).

IBT- Large Indian stack moving in the west. And we get Monotheism from the Babs and Spanish. Chivalry next. Grand River riots.

Turn 9 (30AD) Poitiers gets hit by cats and army. French lose 2 reg spears and a galley. (51-5). Vet sword kills red Fr MI. (52-5). Vet MI kills reg In spear at Salamanca.
(53-5). Reg Sp spear and warrior at Theoville redlined by cats and killed by 2 vet MI. (55-5). Cat hits reg Fr MI, sword army finishes it (56-5).

IBT- AI converges on Theoville. Spain drops off reg sword at Poitiers. No battles this go.

Turn 10 (50AD) Sword army kills reg Fr MI. (57-5). And a 2hp MI on a hill (58-5). Vet sword and cats net Sp reg sword at Poitiers (59-5). And we do it again with an archer of theirs (60-5). MI army kills a reg spear at Santander (61-5). Vet MI loses clean to Fr MI at Theoville (61-6). And done.

Post turn- Indian nuisance stack 4 archer, 2 spear and 2 warriors 2 tiles from Salamanca. Note there are 4 unguarded worker 1 east of Mannyland. Next up needs to decide what to commit to their defense. Pikes available.

Now Theoville- Maybe it can be held. I should have rushed walls last turn. Defended by 5 units, it can be reinforced with 4 more and already has 4 cats. Surrounded by 4 French MI, a French archer, 5 Indian archers with spear and warrior.

Settler due in Grand River in 1. Suggest it go 1NW of the wheat. We have a captured Fr worker already in place to build a horse colony. Then we have just one tile to road to get the MWs going. ;)

We should be able to take out Santander next turn. There is a settler available to raze and replace if needed. :)
