Handy17 AWD Small

Sumeria is a great civ for AW - maybe the best that there is.

The Spain game looks very good, I'll vote for that one unless a better one comes along.
Matt - I don't think we have too many people. Summer games invlove alot of skips.

First post is edited. I'm thinking that may be a pain.
I read that as me having to ask that the first post be edited might be a pain, not the fact you are playing. ;) Bugs is pretty cool. :)
Don't worry about AW experience - just stop & post a save if you are not sure what to do. You'll catch on fast.

well, welcome Matt_G, as grumpy as it can get...

so, we are leaning towards Greebley's start just like last time round. Nobody ain't talking about my start :(

As the johnny come lately, I'll drop out.
No I was thinking that I'm not the game sponsor, but I have the first post. Therefore, when Handy wants something changed in the first post I have to do it. :crazyeye:

I'm fine with you playing. Welcome aboard. :salute: Handy is correct in that summertime play can be difficult.

Edit - now I see I repeated what Handy said.

Edit - @ Rat - Don't worry about it, nobody's talking about my start either.

It's a ploy to put you in a grumpy mood. :p

I love the celts in AW and I do like the looks of that start. Gallics are good pillagers and attackers, so I'd like to come back to it in a later SG.

I've been found out.

I'm working on a Sumeria start right now.
I doubt anyone will talk about this one either.

Let's make sure we get the Glib in this one.

Not getting it last game sealed our fate IMO.

EDIT - We may want to set the play up by time zones. Rat should play after someone on the west coast.

Maybe we could go east, central, west, spore, etc

Greebley East
Handy Central
Bugs West
Rat Spore
bede east
Romeo central
Matt mountain

This is another reason I like Greebley's game. In mine, I didn't even think about it.

Well, I just got back to my Sumeria start after being called upon for honey-do duty, and it went downhill rapidly. Met 2 civs by 3400. They must have been right on top of me. Couldn't handle the initial wave. Lost by conquest in 2850BC.

I don't know if I will have time to try again in the next couple of days...

Edit- typo in loss date.

Handy, your timing looks good, so that means we can finish 1 round in 2 days? ;)
wow, I am playing with 6 grumpy americans
by the way, does Romeo really qualify as a grumpy old man? In his pictures he always looks like a happy man

Let him play a few turns in AWD, and he'll get grumpy very quickly. :gripe:

Here is a very interesting piece of info about armies.
I don't know if you guys were aware of this but I know I wasn't.

Rat, i know you won't belive me, but it's true: our completely healed army in England is attacked! By an archer! Then they attack it with more units and it's gone after killing lots of archers and some ACs. This is weird, i reloaded just to see if it repeats and got the same result. It seemed like if the AI was just moving its units around while patroling and than accidentally ran into our army and attacked it, and after that attacked it with other units too. So i turned the patroling off (removed NoAIPatrol=0 line from conquests.ini) and reloaded again. This time the army was safe! Of course, i continued playing from the save where our army was killed, but this is a very interesting discovery: with the NoAIPatrol fix the armies can get attacked! Maybe this deserves some further discussion in some other forum, cause players with the NoAIPatrol fix receive a much greater advantage then just stupid barbs. I've made a couple more tests and each time the army is attacked with NoAIPatrol=0 and not attacked with NoAIPatrol=1.

@Matt_G

in this AWDG game I sent a knight army to England to pillage as usual. And to our horror, it got attacked since he changed the nopatrol. This some interesting news, we asked him to put it in the war academy or so. This is sth we never considered, since I guess we all use the standard setting anyway.

Well I guess we need to make a decision on how we are going to have our .ini file set. Right now I have mine with NoAIPatrol=0.

I think we all need to be on the same page here. I have no preference either way.
BTW, I will post a Sumeria start here in a few minutes. :)

I played 35 turns.
4000 B.C. (0) Brrr, it’s a little cold in these parts. At least we have some bonus food and it’s on a river. Worker moves to cow and I see no reason to move, so I found on the starting tile. Research set to WC at max rate. Set production to a EW.

3950 B.C. (1) Decide to pop the hut with the worker before we have any military.
We get 25 gold out of it.

3900 B.C. (2) Worker moves back to cow.

3850 B.C. (3) Worker starts irrigating cow.

3750 B.C. (5) First EW done. He stays home and a second is dialed up.

3550 B.C. (9) Second EW completes. Send him out for a quick jaunt to scout out the immediate surroundings. Dial up a rax.

3500 B.C. (10) Borders pop and Ur grows to size 3. Lux to 20%. Worker done with the cattle tile and moves to river BG.

3400 B.C. (12) Find a lux (dyes) west of Ur.

3300 B.C. (14) See an AI scout come out of, and go back into the fog. No chance to make contact.
Looking at F10 it was probably Portugal. They don’t show up on F4. We are still at peace. Ur is up to Size 4. Lux to 40%. Rax in 4.

3050 B.C. (19) Find another cow SE of Ur.

3000 B.C. (20) First vet EW comes off the line. I’m going to pop a worker out now.

2950 B.C. (21) That scout comes back. No deals are possible with Henry so I just inform him of our intention to kill him. We are at war with Portugal.

2800 B.C. (24) WC comes in. Set to masonary for walls and palace for prebuilding.

2510 B.C. (31) Sumer founded by the second cow to the SE. Gold goes positive again.
Portugals initial wave is 2 turns from Ur. I will have 3 EW’s (2 vet and 1 reg) and a vet archer in town when they attack. I hope it’s enough. Sumer has 2 EW’s as well. (1 vet and 1 reg.)

2470 B.C. (32) Henry will hit us next IBT with 10 warriors. (9 regs and 1 conscript).

2430 B.C. (33) I survive without losses. Both vets promote to elite. (9-0)
Got to get a EW over to Lagos for suppression. That city has to burn ASAP. It’s in our first ring.
Needless to say, we are now having a totally useless GA.

2390 B.C. (34) 3 more warriors attack. No losses. (12-0)
Workers move to get water to Sumer for the cow tile. Need to get another city down. I am over the support limit by 1 and will be 2 next turn.
Typical AW, we need everything, have very little and we be broke!

2350 B.C. (35) I’m going to stop here and post it.

Pictures and commentary in next post.

EDIT- for piss poor grammer.

First a few pics.

I was thinking of moving the EW to the mountain NW of Lagos for suppression duty. I was thinking the third city should go on the hill N, NE of Lagos. Perhaps Lagos should be razed first.
I don't know. I'm on new ground here guys.
I'm not even sure this is a good start for AW to tell you the truth.
One good thing is only one civ met so far...

Anyways even if this start isn't used, I would appreciate any crits on my play here. Let me have it with both barrels guys!

Probably should've founded first city on hill, for early 50% defense bonus.

Reason I didn't is because Lagos was already there, his initial wave was already streaming thru there on the way to Ur, and I wanted to get that other cow in play ASAP. It just didn't seem like a good idea at the time.

BTW, I have attached the save if anyone wants to take a look.

I have noticed Armies get attacked when there are no other options for attacks - like when an AI completely owns a continent.

Was this the case in the above game?
It was the case. But when i changed the flag setting and reloaded the same situation (was just curious) the army was safe. I think AI can run into the army while patroling accidentally. If the AI has other targets, then it doesn't patrol and so armies are safe. Do you have that NoAIPatrol fix?

First try drew the Vikings with Zulu as neighbors. Mediocre start and went downhill from there.

Second start drew the Persians with Hannibal as the near neighbor and I made it to 2950 before every Punic warrior appeared and spread salt on the ruins of Persepolis.

Third start drew Greece and we survived the first Carthaginian (again) onslaught but the best site for the GLib city lacked water

So I am going to vote for Spain. The barbarians are actually somewhat in our favor, as they will draw the seed warriors from the neighbors and we won't have twelve showing up on the doorstep two turns after saying "Howdy, here's a pie in your eye."
