Well, we survived the whole 150th mess last year (kinda unfortunate that the year when admission to the national parks was free, people were being evacuated due to forest fires).

Anyway, my day will be spent quietly, as usual. There's a folk festival I won't be going to (it's not sufficiently accessible for the mobility-challenged), and fireworks I can't see (no windows or balconies on that side of the building and too many trees and buildings to see it from the ground). But I can hear them and Maddy will probably get scared.

I finally got my maple fudge delivered from the Company That Must Never Be Named, so that will be my treat as I start yet another month of Camp NaNoWriMo (if you feel like writing a novel in 30 days, see my thread in the A&E forum).

Anyone else planning to celebrate?

Maybe I would. After the six week trip to Kelowna I did back in 2015, it is sure I would like to even at those canicular temperatures back in Quebec

What's Kelowna like nowadays? It's been... over 30 years since I was there last. Actually, probably closer to 40 years. They've had a couple of pretty bad forest fires in recent years.

I should think everything is much more built up than I remember. We didn't live there, just spent some time at Okanagan Lake, visited some people, and went shopping.

It's my understanding—although I have not visited yet—that it's stuck in half-measure gentrification right now. Still popular in tourism but not so great for living if you're used to the Lower Mainland or Victoria.

Yeah, even back then I had the impression that it's nice to visit, but wouldn't be my first choice to live if I were to move to BC. Thinking about it from a present-day perspective, forest fire would be a definite concern. I still can't imagine how you coped last year, just to breathe. The smoke came over the mountains and there were 2-3 days of near zero visibility here from that, and I had to make sure every window was shut because for people like me with smoke allergies, it was hard to breathe. I can't fathom how it must have been, actually being there.

I had family in Vernon, and am most familiar with that city.

I kept the windows closed and didn't leave the house for weeks until it cleared up. I think I went outside once or twice last summer for less than an hour. We didn't even get the worst of it. No idea what I would have done in the epicenter.

Well, I don't have comparisons because
1. I was and still is quite "autistic" in nature
2. I'm still pretty young and I only went there once for a YMCA student summer exchange
So... no clue there, except that I loved the spot.

It's too hot to celebrate.

Happy Scare-The-Crap-Out-Of-Your-Pet-Day!
My kitties are hiding.

I had a really dull day with a sore back no one I know in RL up to anything noteworthy or interesting (from my perspective). At least I get the day off tomorrow as an "in-lieu" holiday. I think there's fireworks in the river valley (which isn't far from where I live later tonight, but I'm not sure exactly what time. I can hear a live concert out my window playing unusual music I don't at all recognize. A CF-18 Hornet roared over my roof last night. Not exactly thrilling, but nothing untoward really happened.

Happy Reciplical tariff day America
I like how American companies went around removing large made in America stickers from their products in Canada.

As long as it wasn't being chased by a MIG, I would say it was nothing thrilling.

Could we please leave tariffs and trade wars out of this thread? There are other places to talk about that stuff.

Thank you. What a difference a year makes! At this time a year ago the heat dome had settled over this part of Canada, and the temperatures were dangerously hot.

We had a thunderstorm tonight, it's been raining lately, and I just heard the fireworks go off a few minutes ago.

No idea what local celebrations might have been happening. July is one of the three NaNoWriMo months of the year in which I commit to writing at least part of a novel in 30 days (my characters get to go on a trip this time, to inspect a ccouple of manor houses their father owns. This is one part of the story I haven't outlined in much detail, though I know where the story has to go later. I think I'll just let them enjoy themselves for the most part. After all, I'm sure the manor houses are in fine condition and the domestic staff there have done their jobs admirably, right?

*evilgrin*

So in summary, this year's Canada Day was very quiet and normal.

I wish I could celebrate both Canada Day and the Forth of July. Since my ancestry on my father’s side can be traced to Quebec (and France if you go really far before French Colonial expeditions).

I suppose you could have a small celebration if there aren't any people who want to celebrate with you. There are Canadians/people of Canadian ancestry who celebrate all over the world (though of course many are much smaller, quieter events than those in the cities here).
