I kinda confused on what bands are metal bands and those that are hard rock bands, are there really any differences between the two? And when did hard rock become metal?

I hard rock bands are:
Led Zeppelin
Guns N Roses
AC/DC
Van Halen

Metal:
Motley Crue
Black Sabbath (probably first metal band)
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Metallica
...

But where does bands like Deep Purple fit?

Your a bit confused there, Deep Purple is considered haqrd rock, whereas guns and roses are consider metal along with van halen, some people eve3n consider AC/DC to be metal, but that is deabatable, Metal is essentailly Hard Rock on speed, its hard rock but much faster.

its like asking what's the difference between a donkey and a mule...not much.

Guns N' Roses are more rock than metal; but really, classic metal and hard rock are so similar that you probably won't get a definitive answer.

Some would consider Aerosmith's Rocks album an influence on metal (when it clearly has rock in its title!), and say that the Beatles' Helter Skelter was the first metal song.

If you've ever watched the VH1 documentary on metal (Heavy: The Story of Metal), there's a clip where Dee Snider of Twisted Sister sits and lists as many types of metal he can think of. The impression I got was that metal is broad and not well-defined.

The bands you have listed have all done work that could be considered rock and work that could be considered metal. You're better off just enjoying the music and not worrying about what it is...unless you're confused as to why your local rock station doesn't play much Maiden.

I wouldn't consider GnR or AC/DC to be metal bands either. But I also consider Motley Crue to be Hard Rock if not Glam Rock. When I think of Crue, all I ever think of is "Girls, Girls, Girls" and that's no metal song...

Who cares about either? 80s glam rock is ALL you should listen to. Seriously.

Motley Crue would be at the glammed up, light end of metal, AC/DC/early Van Halen is pretty much classic metal (and also fits into hard rock) and Metallica starts getting you unmistakenly into heavy metal.

Guns-n-Roses is just overated junk along the same lines as boy bands, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and U2.

None of those mentioned bands are Heavy Metal, save Metallic Judas Preist and Iron Maiden. The rest of it is much too mellow.
Cuz black sabbath is like, you know, totally not the first metal band or anything.

no, no they are not.

being from seattle doesnt mean you were grunge.

alice in chains are either metal or hard rock. maybe with a tad of grunge flavoring from being around the scene though.

Hard Rock and Metal aren't different genres. Metal is Hard Rock.

But there are many genres which fall under the denomination Hard Rock.

It's all rock and roll.

Labels are used to name genres, but in my 20 years of Metal listening, I have
realised that it all has a place in the stratosphere of Rock music. Then only
stuff I would reject is manufacuted MTV crap, and of course Emo.
