I think it finally clicked for me and I'm now having a blast after over 100hrs of gameplay.
Yes there's still lots of improvements I want to see however these are things I really enjoy over previous versions.

WAR - commanders make war so much more manageable and fun. Less micro, more strategy. One click upgrades to your entire untit stack, one click heal, one upgrade tree, group and move. It makes very refeshing to go to war and plan them out. The terrain is making for some interesting choke points too and getting units in place is so much more important.
NAVY - so much improved over 6. Its now fun to wage war with your navies and to use them for specific strategic points. Again the commanders help this so much.
CIV Uniques - having a lot of fun with the unique civ abiliies, districts and units each age. It makes the game less of a slog overall and once you find a rythme of how to use these things its a lot of fun.
Diplomacy - although lacking in some areas the influence system is a big step up in my opinion. It adds much more depth. It works with the resource/trading system which means much more meaninful interactions instead of 1 gold for open borders please and heres some coffee for your favour. Its punchy and to the point.
CITIES - took a while to get used to the towns vs cities but now I see it has a lot of benefits, especially in domination games. You don't need to micro every production in 20 cities you can have 4-5 main cities you want to use and improve towns as and when needed.

UI is improving but needs better city screens and lenses. Mods are helping as they did when CivVI came out :)
The new dlcs are pretty good, adding to the roster helps with replayability.

I too am having a good time with the game. The updates certainly have helped with the rough edges.
Combat feels great, I love comanders. I love the Civs, they feel powerful. I look forward to the transitions (I'm getting close to antiquity end)

I too rarely use mods nowadays, I used to use some of those CivIII and IV mods that would double the tech trees and fill in all the gaps of units and wonders (I wish I could remember the names, they would have been fairy popular)
I'm hoping some team pumps out a 6 Age mega epic game mod in the next few years.

Thank you for a positive and encouraging post. :) I too like the game. I play vanilla though. Mods are seldom for me.
I don't use mods that change the rules or gameplay in any way but there are some great UI mods that just give you better information that are just so helpful. The mod that shows you what yields you will get from each policy before you select it, is just game changing. You can easily see which polices will be most powerful for your current game.

I'm having a ton of fun with the game as well. Aside from some weeks where my time is consumed entirely by another game, I've played non stop since launch.

I find crises bland, but I still look forward to the transitions themselves. Sometimes I make a point of playing to pick a particular civ in a future era, sometimes I don't worry about that. I love picking a new civ in each era and either continuing as a science or culture powerhouse or changing my approach.

I feel it's the most interesting Civ game gameplay wise, for me. I love the diorama art style (though I agree it's hard to tell buildings apart, I can, at this point, identify the library easily, and maybe one or two others, but everything just blends in a lot).

I love the different civs and Assyria ended up making my try leaders I hadn't been using much until then.

I also love the way improvements are done and having fewer cities to micromanage thanks to having towns that require less micromanagement, though I am sure I can get more out of my towns once I dedicate myself to trying to do that more consistently. Really looking forward to Silla and the new leader in the remaining DLC.
