I think it finally clicked for me and I'm now having a blast after over 100hrs of gameplay.
Yes there's still lots of improvements I want to see however these are things I really enjoy over previous versions.
WAR - commanders make war so much more manageable and fun. Less micro, more strategy. One click upgrades to your entire untit stack, one click heal, one upgrade tree, group and move. It makes very refeshing to go to war and plan them out. The terrain is making for some interesting choke points too and getting units in place is so much more important.
NAVY - so much improved over 6. Its now fun to wage war with your navies and to use them for specific strategic points. Again the commanders help this so much.
CIV Uniques - having a lot of fun with the unique civ abiliies, districts and units each age. It makes the game less of a slog overall and once you find a rythme of how to use these things its a lot of fun.
Diplomacy - although lacking in some areas the influence system is a big step up in my opinion. It adds much more depth. It works with the resource/trading system which means much more meaninful interactions instead of 1 gold for open borders please and heres some coffee for your favour. Its punchy and to the point.
CITIES - took a while to get used to the towns vs cities but now I see it has a lot of benefits, especially in domination games. You don't need to micro every production in 20 cities you can have 4-5 main cities you want to use and improve towns as and when needed.
UI is improving but needs better city screens and lenses. Mods are helping as they did when CivVI came out
The new dlcs are pretty good, adding to the roster helps with replayability.
