HELP: failed to initialize renderer

but i have directx 9 and got a new 9600 256mb 8x agp ati graphics card today (read all that info off the box) can anyone help me. That message comes up during loading at the game shuts off. Please help.

What version of the ATI drivers are you using?
Have you patched the game?
Also, what are you system specs other than the Video card?
