Did you tried to bribe someone to DoW his vassal? Sometimes the AI are willing to DoW vassals whose masters are superpowers ....

Declare war on him. Let him invade, then destroy him in place (This will give you minimal war-weariness since you'll be fighting in your lands).

Cannon are your next target tech for war, but catapults are good enough. You just need to knock off a few points of strength of your enemy's troops, then you can kill him with anything you got.

You could probably win peacefully, or you could bribe him to attack someone else, but I would do this for the fun of the fight. Destroy his army, then take over his empire.

I'm not sure 1 gpt gifts or resource trades or open borders agreements or anything short of him demanding something and you agreeing, will get you 10 turns of guaranteed peace, because I've traded with someone and then immediately DoW the next turn anyway.

This is correct. You CANNOT buy 10 turns of peace by offering the AI a gift. The peace treaty only applies if one civ demands tribute and the other agrees. This is chiefly to prevent human players from demanding techs or gold as tribute and then declaring war on the next turn whether or not the AI caves.

You could try demanding tribute. The AI, on occasion, does give tribute to me if I have a weaker army.

Solution-

You need to IMMEDIATELY switch to world-builder and add a tank to your side. Now do that 19 more times. You'll be ok. Whew! That was close!

Well, i think things are looking up.

After my golden age came to an end i had a look at the power graph again and saw that ragnars was starting to level off, i still below him though. An interesting thing i noticed was that the turn after my golden age came to an end i saw that ragnars had also come to a end! i hadn't even relised he was in a golden age. this was either a big concidence or the AI was using the GA strategically to keep pace with me. i have never seen the AI do that before.

Anyway i think the cold war is over - mostly - he still got his stack, less berzerkers, more muskets, and i still have my defensive line, which isn't likely to change, his research has bottom out, and i have signed defenive pacts with pacal and ragnar. So if i don't let my guard down or turn my back on him i think he won't go to war with me anytime soon.

Thanks to all those who gave advice and all those who gave a laugh with their comments . All i have to do now is build up my navy, before i get invaded from that direction, i have noticed that there is quite a few frigates and caravals out there.
