Help with first Monarch Game

Well as the title says i need help with my first monarch game and i thought I would post my progress on my game on this thread so i could possibly become a better player. I have Civilization 4 Bts and it is updated to patch 3.17

Well as you can see I'm Pacal of the Mayans:

Well I will keep posting in this forum the rest of my game don't expect me to be amazing this is my first time I'm doing something like this so any help would be appreciated.

Yes because we have a neighbor right nearby and no room to expand.

Let's not get too hasty, at least pretend to look at the map before jumping into something based solely on the leader.

There's lots of forest so BW is a good idea anyway!

EDIT: At monarch, you need to be able to pull off an early rush IMO. Even though I'm arguing against that in my own thread

OK well here is my first ten turns of my game.


As I started out my game i settled in place:

I also started researching BW like everyone suggested and started building a worker. I scouted to our east and found a goodie hut popped it and...well got a barb,but i destroyed him.

My next turn i got a couple of surprises. One:

Yep, we got Fredrick and Saladin on our map. And 3 turns later i met one more person to join the party:

For some wierd reason all of my games I have Hamurabi on it.


Well after that i got a notice that Saladin founded Buddhism and nothing much happened after that.


Well here's what i know of our world:

As you can see Saladin is really close to us so I'm guessing we should rush him early on and I'm almost done researching BW and my worker is almost done.Any more suggestions for the game would be appreciated and here is the save also.

Fred is usually OK to get along with, and Hammy is hard to rush, so I say Saladin is the target. Try being pals with Freddy.

I would have gone Ag-AH-BW and settled on the wine. You can still do the first part of that when BW is completed and irrigate both wines and pasture the cows. Pacal never needs archery.

hmm why settle on wine?
he cant work on fish anyway (until he build a costal city at top)
and he would lose 2 riverside grasslands
i'd settle at 1W or 1SW (if you can) from wine


another possibility is to settle 1SE (if you can), or 1E from wine
grab the silk+cow with another city


this map is a bit hard
you have to block saladin on east, and frederick on west

my advice would be, kill saladin
he has a holy city, and most likely his land is isolated anyway

Not for the next city, for the capital. That was my thinking too: 2 free commerce is really nice, and he wouldn't have given up the cows.

That said, you have exceptionally nearby targets; Fred just to the West, Sal just to the East. But don't forget Sal is protective

So who would be a better person to rush first Saladin or Freddy?
Saladin has a holy city but Freddy is closer and would be giving me cultural pressure soon.

There's a capital border that I can see that is separated from your capital by just 1 tile...rush whoever that is ASAP.

Finish Bronze Working and research Hunting as well (unless you start with it).

OK well i think I'm gonna rush Freddy but after i research Hunting and get holkans since i might not have copper around me and holkans are resourceless

I was talking about the capital, for reasons outlined by Jujalutre.

Speaking of your game, Saladin especially, but also Freddy are really really close. What map size is this? How many opponents? You definitely need to rush at least one of them.

Well here is my 2nd post of this so here I go.

Well not much happened in these couple of turns except i met one more person:

Yes and there really close so its gonna be a tight squeeze(ha he looks funny).

I also finished BW,hunting,AH, and a worker but i didn't have any copper in my FC. I made my worker chop down some woods and was able to hurry up my holkan and settler.

Well i just was able to get out my settler and am building 2-3 more holkans and am going to take out Freddy but any suggestions on my 2nd city placement would be highly appreciated.

Woops sry i forgot to post this it is a Standard size Continents map and i think it is 7-8(I cant really remember)
