Help with first Monarch Game

Send a unit to keep tabs on his copper.
 
Well i just was able to get out my settler ans am building 2-3 more holkans and am going to take out Freddy but any suggestions on my 2nd city placement would be highly appreciated.

1SW of the NE copper seems obvious. You get 3 resources, and a riverside location. It will be great, both for cottaging and production.
 
So who would be a better person to rush first Saladin or Freddy?
Saladin has a holy city but Freddy is closer and would be giving me cultural pressure soon.

No doubt Fred is a better target. Saladin is protective and a holy city is useless until it gets a shrine. Fred is also more dangerous. Saladin is easy to get along with by just sharing religion.
 
Why are you researching the Wheel ? With 2 Cows in the fat cross, Animal Husbandry should be your first beeline. And since Holkans need Hunting, I would probably have researched Hunting - AH before Bronze Working. The problem with this approach is that your first worker will have nothing to do during the first turns. In this situation, I would consider building a warrior first, or Stonehenge first, depending on the number of turns that are needed to research AH + Hunting (I want to be sure that a worker is on a cow tile exactly when I finish AH). Note that I'd build Stonehenge for the money only.

Edit : mmmh I begin to understand : you probably have Animal Husbandry, but you didn't pasture your cows yet... My comments may be irrelevant, then. However, you should make it a priority. +2 :hammers: + 1:food: per cow tile is huge.
 
Well yes i saved my game right after i researched AH so i haven't had time to go and hook it up.

Ive already researched BW-hunting-AH and am now working on the wheel
I dont know what i should research next either go for farming and then pottery, go towards iron working, or i could go after a religious tech in hope that Saladin will get his religion over to me.
 
Um, am I mistaken or is Saladin one tile away from your fat cross?

...and you don't think rushing him is important?

My thoughts: rush Fred, find bronze and settle at it, then rush Saladin. Reverse order for personal flavor. Don't do a double Holkan rush. You get lucky only once.

Oh, and do some cottaging in between. Double rushes are choking death to an early game miniature economy. Make use of that financial trait. You should be fine as long as you do.

I wouldn't worry too much about his economy. I mean yeah usually rushes do that because they give you a city with some sizeable distance maitenance, but these cities are so close that they'll be little more than a regularly settled second and third city.

Once again, it's ridiculous. Have fun. :p
 
OK well I'm sorry about how long it took for me to update so i did a bit of a longer round this time so here we go.

Well to start off i produced my settler and founded my 2nd city:

A couple of turns later i got a message from Toynbee about Culture and:

Well after that not much happened i researched 2 techs and got a size-able force to rush Freddy and to plus it all off he had 2 workers right on the border line but best of all the turn i was going to attack this happens:

Well the next turn i attacked him and got 2 workers and i looked down to the score board and look what i saw:

YEP that's right he founded Judaism but apparently it is not in his capital.

Well after that i researched Iron Working:

Hey! Where are the rest of the German cities? Does he have more than the one Holy City? It would be good to know, since it seems like this game calls for turning the stack around (adding in a couple swordsmen) and making the OTHER holy city yours as well.
 
Literally all of my past 10 games have had Hammurabi.
Always seems to be a PRO guy, often Gilga, close enough to be a PITA too.

Nice grab on Berlin, heh, getting that bonus is killer. Pop a save up, would love to have a go from there.

Ok ill try to get it up later tonight or tomorow.
Though i might have gotten rid of tht one cuz i played on a little bit more to capture his last city so ill try to recover it
 
correct me if i'm wrong but holkans are immune to 1st strikes right? so protective is useless (cept the wall building thing) when it's holkan vs. archer. IMO you shoulda rushed sal, then done a swords/cat attack on fred. but heck I can barely manage my own monarch games :crazyeye:

Aww i see what you mean yes holkans are imune to first strikes so it wouldve been a better idea to rushSal but i got a wonder out of freddy so it couldve een eithe way
 
Protective also gives a 20% city defense bonus to archers. Considering Holkans are already a relatively very weak unit to do rushes with, any bonus to your enemy is likely to proove fatal. Rushing Saladin with Holkans was highly unadvisable as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah...pro gives both drill and CG I. While nullifying FS's greatly increases the chances of a holkan doing damage, it's not likely to win at all against CG II archers (which Sal would have with just a barracks), especially with culture D or walls on top of it. PRO sucks but the AI gets to annoy us to no end with it :mischief:.

I'd not advocate a rush on PRO unless desperate or going for an ultra fast finish date or something...
