I was thinking today, what would be my favorite leaders if UUs and UBs wouldn't exist ~~
I know it's not a 100% strategy thread, but i think it can result in some interesting discussions about leader strengths ;)

I think my first pick would be...de Gaulle.
Ind + Cha is a combination good for both war and building, and he gets imo the 2 best starting techs with Agri + Wheel.

Other leaders i like, in random order:
Suleiman
Gandhi (not so good starting techs, but excellent traits)
Lincoln (almost like deGaulle, but fishing ~~)
Lizzy (Queen of coastal starts)
Ramy (Think i'd rate Cha a bit higher than Spi, otherwise like Gaulle)
Sitting Bull (Survival King, even without his specials...i think he'd do well)

There are probably more, but enough for now :)

Sury - exp/cre
Hatty - spi/cre
Zara - cre/org
Mehmed - exp/org
Lincoln - phi/cha (yeah I liked the SGOTM 14 in this respect)
Wash - exp/cha

hmm none of them is fin...interesting ;-) to be fair Lizzy is probably top 1. But this is biased rating.

edit:

all of the leaders I wrote offer super strong early game. And as we all know "early game" is basically about what is usual civ game.

Sury is absolute king of early game with bonus on workers, granaries and libraries.

Assuming not archilpego and I have to play the first spawn I get , I'll take Cathy or Sury . My traits will be basically useless by mid game with the exception of Sury's health but at least I'll give myself the best chance of overcoming a dodgy map .

About Sury @Vran, i think it depends on how good your land is.
If it is a tough map and he cannot grab good land, i would sorely miss economy or war traits.
He is a good early rusher thou.

well we played Succession game with L, Rusten, Ororo, Nocho and Cam in succession games part of forum with Sury and we did get mediocre land (if you are in mood to check)
basically got only marble and some food and good flood plains capital south of our start and we did dominate the game, the cheap infra is really strong, you spare ~70-100 hammers per city in the start (depends if you want monuments without cre or not).

It was on Immortal though.

I gained a lot of respect for Sury. When we're at it, Sury is one of strongest AI in game I know... usually big pain in a$$.

edit:
here is link to the game http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=438881 for anyone interested. I think it was good game, even if I had to play it out for the lack of interest at the end.

When I pick leaders i don't worry about UU and UB because I almost always play unrestricted leaders. And my favorite leader is Hannibal because he combines my 2 favorite traits. CHA I find helps a lot with the military side, more than any other trait, and at the very least in a typical game even if you don't pick a fight you're gonna have to defend yourself. And FIN is the most flexible trait in the game. IND doesn't do anything for me at all, because I almost never build more than 2 wonders in the course of a game, no matter the victory condition...

Gandhi. Every time I think of some idea that makes me go, 'oh that'd be cool! Who would pull it off best?' it's always Gandhi.

Dugalle without a saloon seems nice.
That UB is so annoying that I refrain from using any french leader.

Expansive I like alot.
Bismark (Exp/Ind)
and Washington (Exp/Cha)

Both leaders with horrid UUs/UBs, that would look alot better without them.

I vote for Brennus and Joao. They don't lose anything without their crappy UBs and UUs.

Hannibal and Darius are the strongest for me. Zara/Willem are very solid as well. The most enjoyable for me is Boudica though, however she has no real economy traits so getting to the ADs with a large number of cities is tough, largely because of maintenance rather then lack of settlers/workers. Still, being able to do all sorts of things with gunpowder/melee units is rather fun.

Cathy, Victoria, Zara, Willem, Suleiman, Hatty, Gandhi, Mansa in no specific order

I never play AW so I don't see much use for protective.

I second this. The fact that we ignore his uniques just makes him even stronger.

The only other leader that I could possibly imagine being stronger is Pericles...but then again: He would need a much better set of starting techs (Agri,TW/Agri, Mining).

As I've been going up levels, I'm starting to appreciate Organized a lot more, so my tops right now are Napoleon, Asoka, and Frederick for leveraging that. Sury makes the early game a heck of a lot easier, though, so he gets a nod as well.

I'd say Ramesses, gandhi, HC, Darius, and maybe elizabeth are all at the top. It really depends on your play style and the map though.

Pacal

Pretty much anything with CRE, EXP, SPI and/or PHI. Don't care that much for the other traits.

/bonk put some more effort into it! ;)
Lymo wins the laziest post award...!

Not only peoples who watch @AZ videos know about the importance of starting techs ~~
They would be even more important without specials.
