Apparently 'hippyness' is any person or idea that you dont like, which is to the Left of you politcally. The drugs, long hair, B.O, spirituality and music preferences seem to be extras thrown in for good measure. The main thing seems to be leaning to the Left.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Yeah, a true cop out if ever there was.

There are a lot of leftists out there who are by no means "hippies".

Hypocrites that want everything handed to them.

Hippies seem to pride themselves on independence and stability while leaching of the government.
Are you thinking of someone or some group specificly? I've been called a hippie before but I certainly make no claims about stability and/or independence. Most other people I've met who I'm consider hippies (I don't really consider myself one) are far from "stable" and make no claims about being so. I do admit to taking full advantage of the public library system though. :)

I tried to read Kerouac once but got bored quickly.

Beatniks seem to be counterculture just for the sake of being counterculture without any clear goals or ideals, whereas hippies seem to have more vision (generally something about harmony with nature, egalitarian society, etc.), of course hippies aren't much for sticking with their ideals (they all turned into office managers and now-aging soccer moms). Both beatiniks and hippies seem to have a pretty terrible sense of style.

whaaaaa?

hippies were the ones who were counterculture for fashion ;)

beatniks were mostly just poets. kerouac, IIRC, was very patriotic and disliked hippies. his views on being counterculture, i have no idea about.

Most hippies were rebellious middle-class teenagers who were tired of listening to their parents, saw what was going on in Haight-Ashbury, and moved to SF. A few people, as with all movements, really "got" it, but, again, as with any movement, most were just people looking to take advantage of the part of the movement that appealed to them.

exactly, that's why most abandoned it too. it wasnt them, they just liked the music and the portrayed purity in it. personally, i would have moved to the haight back then just for the music, the politics wouldnt have appealed to me back then. though i would protest the war after it got bad though.
