Hippy

Im surprised the word is even still being used. I thought today hippies were called 'bums'.
 
Ah. I think we're going to need flash cards if we're ever going to keep all these terms straight.
 
I think Ron Reagan put it best a hippie is someone who "dresses like Tarzan, has hair like Jane, and smells like Cheetah".

I would not consider Spicoli anything remotely close to being a hippie. He was a stoner surfer boy. Hippies don't wear vans....too commerical.
There's a definite difference.

I think today's hippie is a proficient hackey sacker, lives in Montana during the winter and is a regular at Phish concerts selling enough stuff to get to the next show. Turn on, tune in, drop out, baby.
 
Well, let's not forget the appallingly sterile consumer culture that america had at the time....plenty to react against, and search for value elsewhere.

The idea that hippies were simply a fashion, is somewhat simplistic.

Whether american culture is posessed of a few more bacteria these days, who can tell? time for more hippies, perhaps.
 
Personally, I get rather pissed off when I get called a hippy just because i've got long hair...I do after all listen to Industrial and metal...not very hippish!:lol:

I can certainly sympathize with you there. I went off on an aunt once who told me I looked like a skinhead. I was in the Marines and had a high and tight, I wasn't some loser skinhead. :mad:
 
Hippie:

Tends toward vegetarianism
Tends toward "left wing" ideologies or alternatively anarchy as a government form
Tends toward being proponants of civil liberties
Tends toward certain fashion such as long hair and rock music
Tends toward being a proponant of drugs for recreational use

In other words: foolish.
They're foolish for being proponents of "left wing" ideologies or anarchy.

I've already stated earlier in the thread that metallers, goths, punks and so forth can share all those attributes with hippies yet be radically different in fashion, music and lifestyle.

I match all those you've listed (except foolish:mischief: ) yet i'm very different from a hippy...after all I wear black and paint my nails black, listen to metal bands like Slayer, Machine Head etc and Industrial dance music and can often be found either in a rock pub or in a club listening to pounding music.....hardly something the Hippes I know ever do....in fact the ones I know of would ratehr sit around in park idolising over one of them playing an acoustic guitar wearing brightly coloured cloths and sneering at people like me who go for the metal/goth lifestyle.

You know what, Bozo Erectus? I've been entertained by your posts for a year, and it disappoints me a lot that you like drugs. At least that's what I read on your cfcot wiki article.

I dont like drugs anywhere near as much as I used to, if thats any consolation. Oh yeah the cfcot wiki entry was Fiftys handiwork. Its true that I used to be known as Dumb Pothead, and yes I do smoke the occasional phatty. But prick me, do I not bleed? Allow me to rephrase that...

Anarchy is for idiots, I dont think theres anything particularly hippyish about it. But moderate Leftist tendencies? Thats not so terrible. Even moderate Rightist tendencies are ok.
