Historical Joke Thread

@greekguy: France victories over Germany:
30 years war: allied with Sweden, gained territory (Holy Roman Empire+Habsbourgish Empire)
Napoleonic wars: got all of germany except a much smaller Prussia
WW1: have I to mention this?
WW2: they were in the war even if they weren't that useful...
British: WW1 , WW2 , remember ;)
So, they won more than twice against germans

Sorry for hijacking the thread guys!

Napoleonic wars: France still lost in the end and ended up with no permanent territory gain
WW1: you were about to lose since Russia had surrendered and Germany was moving in with everything they had on the Western Front. America saved the French
WW2: how can you call this a French victory? they were invaded and surrendered in a couple of months. America liberated them and then proceeded to finish WW2 (on 2 fronts at the same time)
WW2 (brits): Britain was all by it's lonesome basically and wasn't winning, but holding out. they would've lost sooner or later without USA.

Final Count:
France-1
Britain-1
USA- 2

First of all the ALLIES liberated France, not just America. Also, as far as I can gather, the greatest effect that America had in WW1 was in terms of morale. Not saying that it was their only effect but it was British and French troops which carried the Allied cause in that war.

Really, the US benefit was much more related to moral. How can you say the american implication was greater than those of France or the British Empire or even more that US is the one that won the war considering this :

Country/Victims
Russia : 6 650 000
Germany : 5 989 000
France : 5 623 800
Austria-Hungary : 4 820 000
British Empire : 2 998 583
Italy : 1 597 000
Serbia : 1 178 148
Ottoman Empire : 725 000
Romania : 455 706
USA : 360 300

Casualty figures. Obviously the country that joined the war three years in and didn't lose any civilians will have the fewest casualties. That said, USA did provide more support in the morale and supplies area.

Not hilarious, but I kinda like this one:

Among these heroic Lacedaimonians and Thespians, the greatest hero of all is said to have been the Spartan Dianeces. Before they make contact with the Persians, Dianeces is reported to have delivered himself of an epigram, upon being informed by a Trachinian that when the barbarians discharge their arrows the sun was hidden, so great were their numbers. Far from being dismayed at this intelligence, Dianeces expressed his contempt for the numbers of the Persian army by declaring that the Trachinian was bringing them excellent news if the Persians were going to be so obliging as to hide the sun in order that the Greeks might be able to fight them in the shade not in glare.

America was very smart. They kept theirn neutrality policy until the european great powers were exhausted, then they launched the decisive attack on Germany. WWI and the few casualties are really the beginning of american supremacy over the world, something that we still live today. However, in the future, America will lose her power. Because great powers can't be great powers forever. That happened with Europe and will happen with the US.

The main question is: why didn't Germany, France and Britain agree to a cease-fire in 1916 or 1917? They were pretty destroyed during these years, but yet they continued to fight. That's basically non-sense: more people died, more money was spent, more people were turning into potential revolutionaries. But stupid people were in the command, so this may be the cause. Besides ruining your army by throwing cavalry and infantry against machine guns without an artillery effective bombardment or protection, this is the major cause of the disaster: ignorance. Generals were still using XIX century tactics with XX century weapons. The obvious result was about a million casualties only in the Somme, in 1916.

Anti-Americanism... hilarious.

I think that started with a bit of French-Bashing by an American but I suppose it is well off topic in any event.

My thoughts exactly. Emphasis on great work.

Perhaps we should come away from nation bashing- except perhaps Italy... ;)

Okay here is something new:

Someone asked Frederic the Great to renew the nobility the family once should have had. His reponse: If someone would noble such liars, so he had to do it in mentally illness.

Some of his secreteries asked, in which relation they were to the military. His answer: "Equal to a Corporal. And if he was in the field he is above you."

I guess I have to add to french theme:
Heroes of 1812 year Patriotic War - Miloradovich and Uvarov spoken french VERY poorly. But in aristocratic sphere always tried to speak french.
Once at dinner with Aleksander I they sat by both sides of russian general Aleksander L'ajernon, french by nationality, and always chatted between each other.
And after dinner Aleksander I asked L'ajernon what Miloradovich and Uvarov discussed with such enthusiasm.
- I'm sorry, mylord, but I can't understand a word - they spoken french.

Once Catherine II got audience of priests. They requested return of church bells, wich Peter the Great melted to cannons and said that will return them later, but not returned.
Then Catherine asked if they asked Peter about bells' return.
"Yes, your highness" - said priest:"We even got documents." and shown her paper. Reading thet she noticed Peter's resolution upon request to return bells wich looked like that:"Maybe even my c_ck you need?" signed:Peter I.
Tsarina then replied:"And as a woman I am unable provide you even with that."

Once Paul I spotted drunk officer on sentry before the Admiralty so he ordered to arrest an officer.
-According to regulations, before arresting me you have to relieve me from sentry.
-He drunk know his work better than we sobers.
Officer was promoted.

One old admiral got an audience with Catherine II after brilliat naval victory and tsarina asked him to describe battle in detail. Admiral began and the more he got carried away by telling the story the more he began to describe his commands to sailors, intermitting it with lots of seaman swearing. After realising that and seing that everyone is in shock he apolagized brfore Catherine, who replied calmly:
-Please, admiral, continue your most interesting story and don't worry, anyway I am not familiar with that naval terms.

Stalin talking with Churchill by phone:
-No
-No
-No
-No
-Yes
-No
-No
Hanging on the phone.
-Comrade Stalin, in what did you agreed with Churchill?
-He asked if I'm hearing him well.
