Hitchhiking & You?

"Anyone who hitchhikes in the USA nowadays is in my opinion a moron of the worst order."

haha.

"They deserve to be shot/stabbed to the point of severe injury, or robbed of everything on them, including their clothing."

So they deserve getting what..possibly...could...happen? That's stupid. Do you ever drive in a car? You know you COULD get in a car crash...Would you say you "deserve" it? For taking the risk?

Gah! "Wherever you want me to go!" "Wherever you are going!"

Oh man, I need to start hitchhiking.

"Oh man, I need to start hitchhiking."

If only that were the rule and not the exception..

I rest my case your Honor.

Heres the problem Ive had with this thread. Much to my amazement, mature, intelligent adults, who really should know better, have been telling young people how much fun hitchhiking is, what a blast it is, and see what happens?

It saves on gas! The environment wins, my wallet wins, and if I get into such a scenario as col, then I win too!

Yep, spin the barrel, theres only a bullet in one chamber! Have fun!

(only takes the one to end all the fun)

It's extremely fun. No one's saying you shouldn't keep your hand on your knife. Take bigger risks!

How about this: stay out of strangers cars, so you dont need to hold a knife in the first place.

I now wish I could drive it's not the driver you have to worry about generally it's the hitchikers, there all psychos right(remember Rutgeur Hauer) Now if I could drive I'd buy myself a few weapons and a shovel and go round cleaning up all these potential nutters from the environment, citing my desire to rid the world of the derranged misfits that chose to hitch hike rather than pay for transportation. You people are looking at this from completely the wrong angle! it's the hitchikers we should fear, not decent law abiding people like me.

Well, this is a moot point because I always carry a knife, because I've managed to piss off all the local facisties at punk shows and protests/counter protests. Plus alphabet city is sometimes not safe for young malchicks. Anyway, if I didn't go hitchiking I never would have seen Louisiana, I never would have seen chicago, and I never would have had the greatest string of adventures in my life, nor met really cool friends, and gotten way closer to friends that I already had. If getting into a strangers car is the way to do such things, then geeze it's really really worth it.

No, I know exactly what I'm doing. Do you? Have you ever gone hitchhiking? Or do you hear horror stories on television like everyone else and automatically assume it's extremely dangerous? People are a lot nicer then it seems. Especially people who pick up weird looking kids in punk attire. They're generally just nice old people who were hippies, people who have hitchiked and had fun traveling adventures and felt like they should help now that they're in the position to, or bored twenty somethings. Occasional weirdos, so follow the 3 :1 ratio! problem is solved!

Not really. Does anyone?

Ok then go for it if its working for you. I hope your luck holds up till you can afford a car.

Don't really encounter it here, even though we are fairly deep in the country. If it was anyone I knew, or from the district, I'd give them a lift, but that isn't really hitchhiking.

People hitching rides in this country is so rare that the only people that seem to do it are transients and criminals. In my entire life I've never seen a normal person trying to hitch a ride.

That's quite a passionate statement, why exactally do you feel that way?

Because these are dangerous times. The whole punishment thing is a bit flippant on my part, but seriously, how dumb can you be?

I for one will not hop into a car driven by a non-professional, unless perhaps i'm outside the US, where hitchhiking is a bit safer.

I know neighbors who will hitchhike around the area. I have given a few rides to people I am familiar with. They had their thumb out so I still call it hitchhiking.

I don't live in Detroit proper, where it would be a really bad idea (plus they have bus service), but in one of the edge cities with limited bus service, but where enough people know eachother that it is a way that a few people can get around town faster than walking sometimes. I would never do it since I don't have that kind of time (I'll just call a cab or shuttle) and I don't like that kind of risk of wondering when I'm going to make it to where I'm going (I've walked across Ann Arbor in my college days, though). Plus, I have never seen a woman try it.

Hitchhiking seems like a generally bad idea. Carpooling, on the other hand...
