HOF Challenge Series X Discussion Thread

Hey Oz -

I'm getting some interesting feedback from new HOF players. Looks like some new recruits are heading over here. Comments were made that it might be a bit confusing for new players just arriving and getting pointed to the HOF site. It might be a bit daunting and possibly turn away players. Honestly, I can't recall my first reaction now 2 or 3 years ago.

While I don't expect the HOF site to change and I do think it is more than fine. Maybe expanding the intro for each HOF game will be helpful to new players. Add a few bullet points that highlight what a new player needs to do to get started - expanding on the just "read the rules". Such as 1) Must install/use BUFFY mod found here *link"
2) Read rules found here *link*
3) Please register on HOF using CFC id using email...more info here *link*
4) Submit games on HOF site
etc.

I don't think you need much but a little more info might make it easier for HOF newbsters to get acclimated. Once you have the verbiage you can add to your static cut/paste for each HOF game thread intro and any announcement posts in General/S&T and Home Page. It couldn't hurt.

clicked through the challenge games...did i see correctly that "no barbarians" games are this time accepted because there is no "required not to checbox" or something like that, but basically former challenges were all with barbs on being mandatory

Yes this is right, the feedback was that forcing barbarians on adds randomness to the game so for this series, no barbs is allowed.

Here's an idea. I'm sure you're always looking for gauntlet ideas too and my suggestion relates to Challenge X.

While the 4 month challenge is going on, occasionally define a gauntlet that is a more open version of one of the challenges such that challenge games would also qualify for the gauntlet. This could encourage participation in both.

No barbs option is allowed.

^^^this or this:

"no barbs" is allowed (with the assumption that "no barbs" refers to a single type of "option", therefore "is" instead of "are"

So Oz is correct even though Aussies don't speak English :mischief:

"is" = proper grammar in this case, as "no barbs" is an individual setting and thus singular.

Exactly, there was nothing wrong with Ozbenno's original sentence as tachywaxon pointed out when someone else seemed to imply that "are" was the correct verb form when "is" as you stated is actually correct.

Also, "barbs" is simply an informal way of saying "barbarians", so that part is correct too.

All this commentary is due to one person commenting on a sentence's grammar when there wasn't actually anything grammarically wrong with the sentence.

I wonder if there isn't a future for some of us teaching English grammar in non-English speaking countries.

Its a bit late but....

Pigs arse!

We speak English, when we can be bothered to not shorten every other word. Also, we bring great clarity and imagination to placenames.

Q. what are you going to call the bridge that crosses Sydney Harbour?
A: oh, you mean the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Q: what about the huge reef, that creates a barrier between the land & the sea?
A: thats the Great Barrier Reef

Q: the big desert with sand?
A: thats the Great Sandy Desert of course.

Q: those mountains, with snow?
A: really, you need me to say... ok, they are the Snowy Mountains.....

I could go on, but I think you get my drift.
If only everyone else was so imaginative!
