"So how's about you and I get together after lunch, sweetie?" Private John Lipton cheerily asked. The cafeteria lady, a girl about sixteen performing community service by aiding the peacekeepers, responded by hitting his hand with the serving ladle hard enough to leave a bruise. "Dang, girl." Lipton gasped past the pain.
Private Lipton then shrugged & took his tray over to the squad of six he was part of was waiting for him. Waiting like one pig waits for another, that is. Lipton braced himself as he approached. A native of Ohio, his parents had moved to Oregon but had sent him up to South Dakota shortly before the Third World War began. Thus, he didn't always understand his all-Canadian squad, especially when they spoke French or said anything including the word "meter".
"Private, it's good you made it despite the underage cafeteria girl's charms." Captain Amherst stated dryly. "We were just discussing our business out here in...where the hell are we, Private?" "Southern Minnesota, Ma'am." "Right. This may surprise you, but we have no idea why we've been deployed here." "What? I got this speech from the Colonel. The 113th is here to ensure stability and provide order in the central region of North America." "Yeah, that's our official mission statement, but have you noticed we're actively recruiting natives such as yourself?" "The Colonel said it himself. Canada's providing too few troops to protect the area, so you have to rely on people like me."

That was the first thing the soldier noticed: deathly, unnatural, cold.
The Soldier, a man by the name of Jeovani Jontelle, was a native of Juneau, one of the warmer parts of Alaska- not that that was saying much, given that the yearly average temperature in Juneau was only about ~40°F, but even the men from Anchorage were having some trouble adapting to Fairbank’s extreme cold. February temperatures in Fairbanks averaged between -3 & -4 degrees Fahrenheit- over 20°F colder than in Anchorage & over 30°F colder than in Juneau.
How can people live here & not freeze? The soldier thought.
“Alright, men!” shouted the Brigadier General in command of the brigade the soldier was a part of. “You are now a part of the Alaska, Inc., Fairbanks Garrison. It is your job to defend Fairbanks & the territories surrounding Fairbanks from attack, and to expand the influence of Alaska, Inc. into Fairbanks & the territories surrounding Fairbanks. I’m not going to lie to you all- it’s cold now, and it’s only going to get colder as we move north to solidify Alaska, Inc.’s hold on the Prudhoe Bay Oil Fields. You best consider yourselves lucky, though, that it took us until February to get here; it’s almost spring. And trust me when I say you do not want to be stuck guarding this town in the heart of winter. But what you want is irrelevant; when you signed up with Alaska, Inc.’s armed forces, you pledged to protect the interests of Aidyn LaMarcus, Jr. & Alaska, Inc. And that’s just what we’re going to do.”
As the Brigadier General finished his speech, many of the soldier’s began to take up uneasy expressions; not all had fully grasped just what they had signed themselves up for until this moment. Jeovani Jontelle did not have any illusions of what lay in store for him when he joined the army- no; the only thing he hadn’t expected was the soul-crushing, bone-chilling cold.

USSA Invades the New American Federation as it descends into chaos!
Socialist State forces based in Fort January crossed into NAF territory just as rebels begin their siege on the NAF capital. The NAF, under-armed and under-equipped, only manage to fend off the USSA in one territory, denying them a province even as the government collapses.

News footage President John Doe of the New American Federation is circulating the web today. The footage shows the bleeding former warlord's leg tied to the bumper of a truck and his body being dragged around the streets of the former capital of the NAF. In related news, President Chloe Anderson, while inspecting the troops in the Confederacy, was shot six times in the chest by a Communist. The Communist was arrested but the damage has been done and the Second Confederacy has dissolved.
