Riflemen require no resources, so you cannot draft anything less.

When I said I have seen conscript swordsmen, I meant that I have seen them popped from huts, not as upgraded warriors.

I would say that's due to upgrading a conscript Warrior, but in light of Bartleby's theory, might this have actually been popped by the Sumerians/Aztecs who had Iron Working but no Wheel?

Someone ought to do an experiment here to test this theory and see how far it can extend down the tech tree - I may eventually if no one else does.

I should probably mention that I got "my theory" from a thread posted a while ago by DocT.

edit: actually this thread was started by Microbe, but DocT gives an explanation.
