when I play I don't feel like theres enough time to use units before they are obsoleted by newer technologies. The game basically flies through without the chance to enjoy any one period of time. I tried playing on marathon to combat this but that also makes it take ten times longer to create units so it ends up being the same thing pretty much. Trade brokerage off didn't really help either. My latest idea was to do accelerated production with marathon only to notice that wasn't an option in the game anymore.

Are there any mods that solve this problem?

If you play efficiently, marathon and epic do solve this problem. I have conquered vast kingdoms with immortals, and entire worlds have been won with keshiks and berserkers. If you are particularly efficient, you can even do this at normal speed. Go read TMIT's thread on Keshik domination and you'll see a graphic and impressive display of using early units to full potential.

I play Epic and Marathon for the same reason. I like the ancient world, and would prefer to linger in it. I start up a game, and before I know it, I'm in "the Industrial Age". Or as the OP posted, I find the window of my UU's usefullness, or any other unit, eclipsed or at least shortened to the point where I barely get to enjoy it.

I know it's discovery / science related, not time, but I always feel like it's a bit like the Loss of Innocence when my nice Ancient world is suddenly trodden underneath the heavy iron boots of the Industrial Age.

I think a prolonged time period yet where unit production is not affected would be, if not ideal, at least more fun; that is, fewer :science: for everybody, but just as many (if not more) :hammers:s

Actually it doesn't. While eveything else is 3x slower, researching techs etc., unit production is only 2x slower. So in relative terms you can build a unit faster and it will take 3x as long before it becomes obsolete.

I had the same thoughts a couple of times. Epic and marathon options are nice, and they kind of solve it, but like OP said, things also take longer to build, so it ends up not solving it completly.

I would also like a game speed that makes research slower, while leaving production normal.

But I have to admit that production slowdown on epic and marathon is very noticeable at the start, but as game advances, I don't really notice things taking much more time to produce. So besides the start, it's pretty ok.

I always play advanced start with marathon because I don't like marathon starts without it. With advanced start you get some gold which you can spend on techs, buildings and units. That way you don't have to be constantly pressing enter in the initial turns.

Make sure you build granaries and use the whip a lot in the early game. It's also helpful to use merchant specialists and try for Great Merchants; one trade mission to another continent can give you enough gold to modernize your entire army.

As a side benefit this will also slow down even AIs you haven't met, as they will know about your large army and be forced to use resources for defensive units instead of research.

I haven't tried this mod much myself, but I would highly recommend the Marathon Accelerated Mod by AveiMil.

Quoting from his post:
Update 18.07.2009: Version 1.1 released

I've created a simple new mod that adds a new game speed; Marathon Accelerated.

It's a game speed based on the Marathon standard template with certain modifications.

• Unit and building production speeds have been increased to match that of the Normal game speed setting. They are now both set to 100% instead of 200% (units) and 300% (buildings) in the standard Marathon setting. This should make the AI a bit tougher as it is programmed to play on normal setting where both production speeds are equal.
• Research time for technologies has been increased to 560% instead of the 300% of the standard Marathon setting.*
• Build Research has been given to the Mysticism technology instead of Alphabet so that you’re not forced to create units early game when there’s no buildings left to build.

You can now expect to fight long wars in the same era without units becoming obsolete quickly. Realize that a technology advantage is far more valuable with these settings than with standard Marathon. As the AI is not as clever as human players it is recommended that you play on one notch higher difficulty than you would normally play on. This is especially true if you normally play on Monarch and below.

I can't remember which .XML file this is in, but it's one of the easiest things to edit and I used to play a modified version of Marathon where everything was built at normal speed but tech was still slow. It was an interesting change of pace, but you end up with most of your cities building Wealth or Research as you run out of things to build pretty quick.
