How did you get started playing Civilization?

I saw a commercial last march and thought it (civ3) looked cool so i bought it. Never had any other Civilization games though.

Back in 1990, my freshman year of college, I was sitting next to my friend in one of the Mac computer labs. I saw him playing a game with little pictures of peoples faces smiling and frowning and even some pictures of Elvis! I asked him, "What in the heck are you playing." Let's just say the rest is history . . . . :D

Well, I wanted to try out Empire Earth and Civ.3. (Wanted to try EE more) I ended up getting both of them in an auction on eBay. Well, I tried EE and didn't like it, so I tried Civ.3 and liked it, then I found out there were forums. :)

When i was about 8-9 years or so my uncle, who at that time still living with my grandparents, bought civ1. I did never play it though i were wathing him playing it for hours, then a year later he bought Civ2 and by the age of 10 i was playing Civ2. Got Civ3 last Cristmas. So I have been a civer the last 5 years. BTW my uncle has just bought Civ3

It seems like only a couple of years ago that a friend introduced me to CIV2. I already heard about it and knew that it had to be great. But I always thought first person shooters were my type of game. Boy was I wrong.

The first game we played I know we started at 19 h. I looked at my watch a couple of times and remember that it was 20 h at one point and then suddenly it was 5 am:eek:

Sadly I had to go home then because I had a really important exam the day after.

I was hooked but it really turned into a obsession when I got SMAC. Since then things went to a more or less normal status and no I can call my love for CIV3 a healthy one...

Oh forgot to mention i also played SMAC and expansion after they came out.

I saw it at my friend's house, and I was practically drooling over it. I bought it, but then had to wait 2 months because our computer was obsolete! I've been able to play it now for about a year, and I like to consider myself pretty good at it.

Wait... is it Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri? If so, never mind. I have that game, and it just isn't as good as Civ3. It was interesting, but far too easy.

Wow I am so young in the Civ world! in the late 80's early ninties I was but a child! I found Civ around March I had moved out of my parents house and just bought my own computer, I was looking for some fun games and I heard great reviews for Civ 3, I've always loved History and this game played to my love of history, needless to say I was hooked.

I used to work in Alaska as a commercial fisherman, but all the boats were based in Seattle, so we had a week long steam up to the Aleutians. Some friends used to bring laptops along to combat the boredom. Warlords II was always popular, but then one time someone bought Civ II and half the crew almost got fired that season for turning up late, falling asleep on shift or fighting for the laptops. That was in 95.
In general fishermen are a pretty hard partying bunch and we called the boats Seahab. There was a zero tolerance policy at sea. I find it ironic that during seahab I got addicted to something stronger than anything I had found on land.

My Dad won a voucher for helping out the local soccer club, and bought civ1 for windows with it.

Now I am a obsessed Civ3 player. I should join Civfanatics Anonymous.

Started with colonization on my mothers 486 which she bought after I made the 286 crash. Finally a game in color :)
I 've reinstalled Col several times, but it's not that easy configuring the right DMA, IRQ, EMS and even then Col crashed a lot.

Then I got Civ2, sold it , bought Civ2 Golden Edition for multiplayer. Started with Civ3 , let it rest for a while ( too much bugs at the start ). Then when I heard about PTW , reinstalled civ and intalled PTW. And let's just say the rest is history . . . :D

I never played the original Civ, SMAC neither. But I have them both , bought them for 5€.

I'm still waiting on Colonization 2 ... :(

The corner dealer sold me Civ2 for 9.99 in May 2001. Of course it was only a gateway to Civ3 and PTW. Also sold me a copy of SMAC as part of collection of other games I didn't install. Installed SMAC, but never played it too seriously.

I never in my life played a strategy game of any kind 'til Civ 3. I remember seeing it on the shelf last December, picked it up and read the covers. I thought 'this looks cool' and most people seem to enjoy it, and since I had the cash to blow I got it. The second day I had it (the first night was spent reading the entire manual and getting used to the actual gameplay), I played for nine hours straight, from noon to 9pm. I remember looking at the clock like 'WTH, it was just 3 not that long ago'. I was never hooked to any game like I was with this one. I got a solid year out of this game and it's still going. I am glad I bought it, and would do it again if I had the chance. No game has ever lasted this long for me.

I have fond memories of playing the old original boardgame Civilization with groups of friends trading calamity cards (civil war, famine, civil disorder, etc) back and forth.

But I was first introduced in a very subtle way to the computer version of Civilization by a good friend who was hooked on playing Civ 2. I remember watching him play the game and thinking that if I played I would probably like it. But for some odd reason I never took it upon myself to actually play.

But when seeing advertisements and information about Civ 3 when it first came out I decided to give the game a shot and see what it was all about.

I now wonder just what was I thinking when I look back at why I never started playing Civ 2. I am a Civilization III addict now and could never think of computer gaming without thinking about Civ.

I got civ I with my first computer (386 SX) in 1994 and i was thrilled. I think it was 1998 when I got a copy of Civ2. A friend borrowed me his copy of SMAC for a summer holiday and I got Civ3 in March 2002. My addiction increased with every game. If I only knew about CTP, I would have looked for it.
