I was taught seven, but I see eurasia as technically one continent.

However, what about India? I mean, sure it's collided with Asia, but why can't that be seen as just 2 continents hitting eachother, rather than India just joining with Asia? Antarctica is expected to do a similar thing.

"Continent" is an arbitrary term, so there are as many as you want there to be.

That said, I go with North America (including Central America), South America, Eurasia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. Although it is cheating to add islands to continents, I put the Caribbean with North America and most Pacific islands with Australia.

Geographically, Europe is just the biggest peninsula in the world, belonging to Eurasia. Not a continent by itself.

Culturally, there are 7: Africa, America (North, South), Antarctica, Asia, Australia+Oceania, Europe.

Geographically, there could be either 4: Eurasiafrica, America, Australia, Antarctica, 5: Eurasiafrica, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica, or 6: Eurasia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica, but definitely not 7.

Culturally, there are 7: Africa, America (North, South), Antarctica, Asia, Australia+Oceania, Europe.

Culturally, Asia makes no sense as one. Furthermore, I, as French, feel stronger cultural ties with Morocco than with Azerbaijan. The Caspian Sea is another world to me.

The whole concept of Europe as a continent is flawed, let's face it. I would even add that it is slightly racist. Each time I talk about that topic and I suggest the idea Russia and Turkey aren't necessarily European, people take it as if I was despising them. It's always the same, people start talking to me about their cultural ties with the Greeks and the fact they are white-skinned. I don't deny such obvious truthes. I just deny the idea that Europe is defined by colour of skin and bonds with the Greek civilization. After all, Lebanon or Egypt have also strong cultural bonds with the Greeks, and Iran or Uzbekhistan are also peopled by white guys !

My point is simply that Europe only makes sense as a geographic concept if it's regarded as a peninsula. And I clearly don't consider Russians or Turks as culturally backwards or as having no tie with Europe simply because I say they are not located on that peninsula ! I just say what I see.

Now this is only about a way to see things. I don't reject the concept of a European continent ending at the Urals, I just judge it as artificial.

Australia is almost three million square miles.

Greenland is an ice covered mass of about 850,000 square miles. But if the ice ever melts, its likely that it will be an archipelago.

Antarctica is estimated to be about four or five million square miles. But under the ice, it's probably no larger than australia

However, Europe and Asia are basically one continent; but I suppose differences in cultures prompted a relabeling of Eurasia into two continents.

And what are the italic, balkan, iberian, scandinavian, crimea and jutland peninsulas? Capes?
